The problem is that, despite overwhelming support by Californians, the state hasn't followed through on building more storage for all this water. It's worth noting that just last summer all the climate experts were saying we'd never have significant precipitation in the Sierra Nevada ever again.
I'm missing out, I have GOT to get down to CA and go up and down the state and just take in all this water. When I grew up there Owens Lake was nothing but a dusty playa. I've never seen it with water in it. I've gotta go see that. Gotta go see Mt Shasta covered; the last few times I've made that drive there was nothing there but a couple spotty glaciers that probably didn't add up to 100 acres total. Now it looks like a snow cone. Last time I drove over Shasta Lake I was incredulous over the LACK of water. It looks _amazing_ now.
As a truck driver, I've crossed over Shasta lake countless times. Watched it get lower over time It's great to see such a rebound. My concern is about california government wasting our water and our need to refill the aquifers along with the reservoirs.
The larger reservoirs are controlled by the federal Bureau of Reclamation and to a smaller extent the Army Corp of Engineers. Your prejudice against California is showing.

Also I hear in Michigan Poland spring owned by Nestle, is paying only like $500 per year to the localities and the bottle that water at huge profits , while local people get left dry… I’m mostly concerned by privatization of our water sources , but waste I’d def unforgivable…agreed

In 76 waterskiing and jet skis and fly fishing in the back .btw boat ride in is simply amazing.breathtaking .incredible colors just beautiful. Def best part of Shasta. The lake itself is nice but this is spectacular Btw my dad retired from bureau of reclamation central valley project Worked up in Shasta area and weed. He worked all over the place. I pretty much grew up in a boat on a lake and around fish hatchery s and hydr0 electrical res. Dams . Ok my dad's one those dam inspectors. I drive on i5 every few months and it was crazy to see the water level so low, you had to see it in person it's crazy such a big lake and water so low but last 2 times I saw it rise up and the last time was like 10 feet away from the top was just amazing to see in such short time.
Trinity lake has been releasing significant amounts of water. Here are stats from April 2023: Inflow computed. 274,653 acre-feet Hydro power release 106,986 acre-feet Outlet release. 186,171 acre-feet Storage change. (-) 20,300 acre-feet There have been repairs to the dam outlet structure underway according to the USBR website although those repairs were supposed to be completed by early April. Many unanswered questions remain.
Yeah they dropped the lake level by about 8 feet when the river was very high. Claiming that they needed to make repairs. Seems that repairs should have been made when the lake level was lowest not right when we're getting the most inflow. How convenient right.
The fact that one good winter can bring the lake from historic lows to full means that California has not built enough reservoir capacity. Time California gets real and stops wasting money on the non-essentials and pays attention to the essentials, such as WATER AND POWER

Was there August/2007, water level dropped approx 2'ft over night. House boat had to be pulled out from bottoming out shoreline nearly daily. Bridge bay service would come out within 30-45 minutes, to help.

Depending on the law, and resistance from environmentalist c*ck blockers. Is not about opportunity to dig deeper, but any reservoir suffer the reduction of storage capacity due to buildup sediment over time. They should at least dredge the sediment out if they haven't.
The question I have is how long at normal use will it take to empty it out again, especially if the summer proves dry again ? There does not appear to be a happy median any longer... it seems to be from extreme high to extreme low with all these lakes / reservoirs now... I would say much more careful management would be helpful from now on.

Personally, I think California and the West of America has been "incredibly" lucky! The Tonga volcano erupting seems to have cooled much of the Southern Hemisphere considerably. The Southern oceans are much cooler than expected and I think this is in part the result. So, if it had not been for Tonga... what I'm trying to say is Harold and all of us have been fortunate, and we must not be complacent.

Greenhouse gases are also spilled into the air by a volcano, but are probably dispersed more broadly and their effects would be less pronounced in the same area. This is all a guess on my part. Would love a climate scientist to confirm or correct.
There IS quite a bit of suffering when that amount of water comes all at once. There'll be some jobs lost down in the San Joaquin Valley and quite a bit of crop loss, so it's also gonna raise food prices for awhile. On balance, though, this was needed SO badly. If they can keep these reservoirs at decent levels as long as possible and give aquifers a chance to recharge, CA can dodge a bullet for another decade or so.
More canals, lakes and reservoirs need to be constructed to contain the Atmospheric rivers and their waters within the continental United states so that water scarcity can be resolved.
Or more people can leave the south and repopulate places like the Great Lakes were water is plentiful, many Great Lake cities have declining populations for decades now people abandoned it to live in unsustainable regions instead
Exactly. It’s amazing how many people don’t have any clue how it wasn’t until A/C became common in new homes in the 1950’s that people started moving into the desert southwest. Anywhere south of Kansas can be a sweltering hellhole in the summer, and extreme temperatures can and do happen on the plains and into the Midwest all the way to the Canadian border. A/C was probably the biggest factor in demographic change in the US post War.

Hey kids, here's a word they don't teach in schools: CYCLICAL. It was used WAAAAAAY back in the early 90s after a drought in the late 80s, followed by a few years of flooding.
People forget that this is what all of these reservoirs where built for. They were not built for the purpose of eternally nearly full lakes. They were built for the purpose of getting through the periodic droughts that everybody who actually pays attention to history knew would eventually happen. And the reservoirs have done exactly the job that they were built to do. Store and provide water when it is plentiful and provide water for the years when it is not.
Taxes must pay in to be able to benefit Being cheap and will not get this job done. And not paying for the maintenance of course you're going to have problems and with a damn breaking it could be very serious problems. Do you people not understand this I don't get it
Over the last 5 weeks, EBMUD has drained about 8to9 feet of water off Lake Camanche in Amador Co. Almost back to its lowest point over the past 18months. Go have a look. I've got pics with the water & current pics now.
Oh sounds like lake camanche Reservoir Is doing what the reservoir was made for. To assist the calif lakes with. Capacity and Flow and tomake systems with controlled means so to help regulators oversee and get better control of holding and storage and control to move water where and if need be. For flood safety. For farmers ,for safe drinking water and for you recreational wants. We have had projects to be added to the system and it start the project and then halfway through they said there's not enough funding and blah blah blah sell the land to expensive fancy housing advertising beautiful sights and then they scrubbed the project cuz not enough funding so these rich people are looking at empty holes up in Sacramento they even built the dam first but never filled in the water stop blaming the government there waiting for you to give him some money so you can do what they're made to do squabbling over but yes next time government wants to do a damn or even do maintenance on those vote yes.... Yes storms are going to get worse is Lexie going to be full when putting pressure on the dams are in place now which need maintenance are they also need more reservoirs and to take the pressure off these older systems that clearly need nothing's made to last forever unless you keep it maintained and replace old parts or fix broken areas if you don't do such things it will fail. But if you maintain them their last the last a really long time at least through your lifetime maybe your children's lifetimes that's a lot of lives saved
You do realize that as snowmelt happens through the summer, there will be a lot of water flowing into this lake/reservoir which will slowly or quickly refill it again, and outflows will be managed to balance that out. A reservoir that is almost full can’t absorb extra flow without catastrophic emergency release needed so drawing it down gives the reservoir and its dam some breathing room to do its job, namely reduce excessive flows and moderate that all along the reservoir and river systems. This one reservoir is only one checkpoint for water flow and water storage in the entire California water management system. You have to see the bigger picture of how all of this extra water is to be managed and used most efficiently.
Ya you are right it is so great the lake is full again,and you talk how good it is for peoples businesses, but what about the Salmon? Can they get to their traditional spawning grounds? Ya you get water for electricity and for farms down below, but what about the Salmon? Please explain this to us without lying.

I was expecting two consecutive years of very good storms. That's how it happen a few years ago.
I was there in October when it was 30% full. Didn’t realize at the time it was the states biggest reservoir.

Personally, I think California and the West of America has been "incredibly" lucky!
The Tonga volcano erupting seems to have cooled much of the Southern Hemisphere considerably.
The Southern oceans are much cooler than expected and I think this is in part the result.
So, if it had not been for Tonga... what I'm trying to say is Harold and all of us have been fortunate, and we must not be complacent.

@@velociraptorblue866 Ash and debris in the atmosphere block and reflect a small percentage of sunlight, cooling the areas where the debris is blown. Greenhouse gases are also spilled into the air by a volcano, but are probably dispersed more broadly and their effects would be less pronounced in the same area. This is all a guess on my part. Would love a climate scientist to confirm or correct.

It's good the reservoirs are full or nearly so, but it hasn't been such a good winter for folks whose houses were flooded.
There IS quite a bit of suffering when that amount of water comes all at once. There'll be some jobs lost down in the San Joaquin Valley and quite a bit of crop loss, so it's also gonna raise food prices for awhile. On balance, though, this was needed SO badly. If they can keep these reservoirs at decent levels as long as possible and give aquifers a chance to recharge, CA can dodge a bullet for another decade or so.

More canals, lakes and reservoirs need to be constructed to contain the Atmospheric rivers and their waters within the continental United states so that water scarcity can be resolved.
Or more people can leave the south and repopulate places like the Great Lakes were water is plentiful, many Great Lake cities have declining populations for decades now people abandoned it to live in unsustainable regions instead
Exactly. It’s amazing how many people don’t have any clue how it wasn’t until A/C became common in new homes in the 1950’s that people started moving into the desert southwest. Anywhere south of Kansas can be a sweltering hellhole in the summer, and extreme temperatures can and do happen on the plains and into the Midwest all the way to the Canadian border.
A/C was probably the biggest factor in demographic change in the US post War.

I mean how come the lake got down to 30% when 2020? or 2019 was a huge year as well. So it barely can keep up with one season of water usage from the population? yeah then there should be more capacity because there should be at least 3-5 years worth of water stored because we can't expect every year to be the same.

People forget that this is what all of these reservoirs where built for. They were not built for the purpose of eternally nearly full lakes. They were built for the purpose of getting through the periodic droughts that everybody who actually pays attention to history knew would eventually happen.
And the reservoirs have done exactly the job that they were built to do. Store and provide water when it is plentiful and provide water for the years when it is not.

Over the last 5 weeks, EBMUD has drained about 8to9 feet of water off Lake Camanche in Amador Co. Almost back to its lowest point over the past 18months. Go have a look. I've got pics with the water & current pics now.

To assist the calif lakes with. Capacity and Flow and tomake systems with controlled means so to help regulators oversee and get better control of holding and storage and control to move water where and if need be.
For flood safety. For farmers ,for safe drinking water and for you recreational wants.
We have had projects to be added to the system and it start the project and then halfway through they said there's not enough funding and blah blah blah sell the land to expensive fancy housing advertising beautiful sights and then they scrubbed the project cuz not enough funding so these rich people are looking at empty holes up in Sacramento they even built the dam first but never filled in the water stop blaming the government there waiting for you to give him some money so you can do what they're made to do squabbling over but yes next time government wants to do a damn or even do maintenance on those vote yes.... Yes storms are going to get worse is Lexie going to be full when putting pressure on the dams are in place now which need maintenance are they also need more reservoirs and to take the pressure off these older systems that clearly need nothing's made to last forever unless you keep it maintained and replace old parts or fix broken areas if you don't do such things it will fail. But if you maintain them their last the last a really long time at least through your lifetime maybe your children's lifetimes that's a lot of lives saved
You do realize that as snowmelt happens through the summer, there will be a lot of water flowing into this lake/reservoir which will slowly or quickly refill it again, and outflows will be managed to balance that out. A reservoir that is almost full can’t absorb extra flow without catastrophic emergency release needed so drawing it down gives the reservoir and its dam some breathing room to do its job, namely reduce excessive flows and moderate that all along the reservoir and river systems. This one reservoir is only one checkpoint for water flow and water storage in the entire California water management system.
You have to see the bigger picture of how all of this extra water is to be managed and used most efficiently.
