I just returned from a Spring Break vacation. I have been here many, many times since my youth. Please visit them! It has so much to offers families and you will support local Appalachia communities. So many lovely hikes! We enjoyed renting a cabin this March from AirBNB and just returned. So many deer! Birds, fish, beaver and the list goes on. They have a neighboring State Park called Blackwater Falls. It is beautiful as well. If you have kids that love to swim, Canaan Valley Resort is a great family friendly place. The Club Sandwich in the casual quick bites restaurant was soooooo delicious! The steak in the dining room was also fantastic and had stunning views over the valley. We plan on returning this summer as well. Please be sure to shop at the local stores. So many creative and kind people have all sorts of things in their shops. So often we get caught up in the fast pace of life, but this place is more like a slow roll of beauty and family fun. Go! :)

A wonderful tribute Todd, to a remarkable area! Temperature sounds perfect for a year round getaway. Put in a small greenhouse, and good to go!
Balsam fir are the most glorious of all the pines. The scent, to me, is instant Christmas time. Old time weather sticks are cut from balsams.
Feeding deer corn was a favorite past time when I first moved to rural life.

God’s special Country! When you have lots of deer, you need predators like cougars, wolves and bear or sickness from crowding. Man is also a predator and if there are hungry people, it is an old tradition for a family, or more often lonely elderly find a skinned and portioned out deer on their doorstep come hunting season. There have been times when out local deer are known as long legged rats!

There is a trail that views the valley from atop Timberline Resort. You can reach it by vehicle. If you drive past the parking area for the Canaan Valley Refuge I feature in this video and continue on that same road all the way to the top of Cabin Mountain, you will have about a 2 mile walk or so, maybe longer, to Cabin Mountain opposite Canaan Valley Ski Resort. Another great view is to take the Canaan Valley Ski Resort Chair Lift up top, then walk to the Overlook of Red Creek....they hang glide off this point and its a spectacular view. Enjoy your trip.
