@@What.its.like. There was exactly 1 Packard Hawk in our area when I was a youngster. I saw it many times, it was always parked at "The Mill" on U.S. Rt. 20 in Mentor, Ohio. I'm sure the owner worked at "The Mill"(that place is gone now) The car was there from 1958 until around 1970. After that, it was gone, I have never seen another one. I knew what it was, and was always happy to see it. "The Mill" was maybe 10>12 miles from our home. That building was at the corner of U.S. Rt. 20 and Ohio Rt. 615(Center Street) "The Mill" has been gone over 30 years.

The styling of the cars of the 50s are what made me a car nut as a kid. After that era passed car design had it's moments but was never the same for me. Love seeing you show the best of those years on your videos! Thanks!

The 30s and the 50s are my two favorite eras personally don’t get me wrong I love everything but those are my two favorite eras fenders and fins =)
There is a bullet nose Studebaker in the pipeline not sure when we will get to it auburn speedster Monday =)
The goal is is the cover as many cars as possible. I really want to cover at least one car from every manufacture and tell the story I know there are some car companies that are extinct. I would also love to do car companies by state. I’m pretty sure there’s either five or six car companies in Pennsylvania The state where I’m from.. all extinct.. I’m having a hard time coming up how I’m going to format it though if I did a series it would be 50 episodes long and I don’t really want it to be that long. I also don’t want it to be 10 years long either in duration. lol

It sucks they didn’t make that many of them. There’s one for sale on Facebook marketplace it needs completely restored it’s like halfway there. It looks like it’s painted and everything they want $65,000 for it. Another excellent video! I graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1957 so knew everything about Studebaker! We all did in those days because the company was what greased the economic wheels of South Bend. I loved all the Hawks, great looks and designs. UNTIL... that 1958 Packard with that ill-designed, fish lips front end thing was grafted on for some never-to-be-known reason! I hated it then and hate it now! I always thought it absolutely ruined the looks of one of the most beautiful car designs ever! You did a nice job however in presenting the rest of the car. It was a beauty!

Hi Jay down in the basement in the comments, caught the Packard Hawk, and Pontiac videos late. Just want to give you a tidbit of info on the idea of the Packard Hawk taken from the book by Mark James on the history of the Golden hawk, that the president of Curtiss-Wright Roy Hurley instructed Duncan McRae in 1956 to build him a custom sports car based on the Golden Hawk, to be a Packard Hawk, which Duncan McRae took it that It was going to be a one off for Mr. Hurley's personal use , but Mr. Hurley ordered the Packard Hawk into production and 9 months later after the 588 was built was cancelled .

Damn that is one ugly front end on the Packard. It looks like a Pixar character rejected from 'Cars'. I will admit that I prefer the slopping rear deck lid of the Packard, but the Studebakers raised corrugated-look section of the boot looks much better in chrome than painted the car colour as in your example.

When I was a very young kid in the early 60's I would occasionally see the Golden Hawks in my hometown of Brownsburg, just west of Speedway, IN. My thrill as a young boy was a trip to the Speedway race track with my dad to enjoy the huge antique car show there every summer. I can remember seeing more Golden Hawks in the parking areas (they weren't yet "classics" at that time, but regular cars folks were still driving, of course). Hi Jay. I just love the finned Studebaker Hawks, and the weird face on the Packard version doesn't trouble me. I'm not surprised that the front is fibreglass - so are the fins. Studebaker did a bit of that, rather than cop the expense of changing the tooling for the next year's panels. The Packard V8 was indeed heavy, but the Stude V8 was no lightweight either. All V8 Studes are a bit nose heavy. The Stude V8 dated from 1951, and Studes to the last used variations on the 1953 chassis, so they were getting a bit dated in many respects, much as I love them. You pictured a Stude Hawk with a toilet seat on the trunk lid. I've never seen that, and have doubts as to how original it is. Right at the end of the video, after all those shots of beautiful Hawks, You slipped in the photo of that pink Lincoln!!!! That thing is soooooooo ugly!!!!!!! Cheers.

    • @What.its.like.
      @What.its.like.  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Great information I think the reason you never saw the toilet seat is because it was only on the 58 Goldenhawk. There wasn’t that many differences between the 57 and 58 but that was one of them also, the front actually has grills in the two side grills, where, as the 57 is more open, I think I’d like the 57 better the 57 isn’t nearly as rare as the 58 they didn’t make that many Studebaker golden Hawks and 58 and it led to the discontinuation of the golden Hawk, they would still produce the silver hawk or the pillared one until 61 I believe but they’re not supercharged
I really want to cover a hawk this year. I really wanted to cover a hawk last year but I’ve been holding out. I want to find one that I can drive. That car looks absolutely amazing. It’s a car that I really want to own. I was going to add in the video , it’s like one of my top three cars of all time but that’s a 57 especially 50s cars. It probably ranks in the top two…
I was just having a conversation similar to this with my wife and I told her she’s never seen a golden hawk in person I don’t she’s never seen a car that she is absolutely loved. She doesn’t go to any of these car events with me, but this year I’d love to take her to a few , I would love for her to see a Goldenhawk in person she’ll be like no that’s my car lol

The Packard Hardtop is not a bad-looking car. Two things I'd change.
    1) The outer bulges/flares for the dual headlamps should extend much farther down the flanks until they gracefully blend into the side molding.
    2) The double-layer rear fins are a good idea, but I think they could have been more subtly done, a bit closer to the '57 Dodge. Maybe they could have been linked to the headlight bulges.
Otherwise the car has pretty advanced styling for its time.

"Jet-age" grille styling looks a bit odd now but was probably good for the time. "Dagmar" bullets up front were all the rage then. Definitely elegant with semi-restrained styling elsewhere and unique points like the textured rear fin panels and the door-top covering. Lots of brightwork but not over-done remembering this is the era of big chrome everywhere. And nobody could complain about the performance. Given the styling and rarity this car would gather crowds at a vintage car show.
WYR I like the 64 Gran Turismo, seems ti be something "Italian" about it's styling, but staying in the 50's era I like the 56 Golden Hawk. Round 2 goes to the Caddy. But in either case, this Packard gets an honorary win for being such an elegant and unapologizing way to close out the history of Packard. It's really a beautiful car.

The first one of these I'd seen was in the mid-80's at a Motel on I80. I knew what Packard was but I'd never seen anything like this before. I recognized it as a Studebaker Hawk, but that front end, that was something else. To me it looks like a vacuum cleaner attachment or maybe the mouth of a sturgeon fish. The 2nd one of these I saw was at a local Packard meet held at the Fashion Island shopping center in Newport Beach, CA. They were originally priced way too high. With their odd front end styling and Studebaker roots, it's no wonder they sold so few.
I'd go for the Caddy or the '64 Studebaker with the R2 engine. I'd much rather have a '64 Avanti.

Hi Jay! Packard Hawk! Rare beast! That is one of those fifties cars that is kind of so ugly, you just have to love it! I think if they had moved that round emblem up on the hood and also repositioned the PACKARD lettering back more toward the hood line they could have used a TALLER grille and alleviated the "catfish" look a little. Looking at the two door hardtop you show, the front looks lest catfishy on those because they are taller, I would have DITCHED the goofy "bird bath" on the deck lid, it just spoils the lines. The rest of the car is NICE and very PLUSH! I kind of dig the "external arm rests" on the outside. Would be nice and comfy on a hot day with the windows down! And they provided for the rear seat passengers, too! It's very sad that such a GREAT American automobile make had to go out the way they did! I just have to agree with you that the supercharged 289 Stude engine is SO underrated! It was just as important engine as the Fuelie 283's/327's that Chevy made. I thought you were going to make it too hard for me on the WYR's but you gave me a little out with the second one and I appreciate it! The first one is still REALLY hard! LOVE the '57 GH so much! But I also am a HUGE fan of the GT Hawk as well, so I'm going there with the R-2! In the second one in the showdown of ugly cars, I have to give it to the Packard Hawk, would MUCH rather have that than either of the other two. If you ever get to South Bend to the Stude National Museum, the had the Packard Predictor there. PRETTY interesing! Might have been the future for Packard, but we all have to remember that 1958 was a recession year and the Predictor had it come to production probably would have went the way of the Edsel (a very similar looking car). One last thing. I LOVE that they put the Packard Hexagon in the center of the hup caps for that final year! A REALLY classy touch!

Yeah definitely not the Packard I would choose in a line-up of them, but at-least it's distinctive, can't take that away from it that's for sure. For the poll first would be the 64 GT R2, the GT is my favorite iteration but I like them all really, Studebaker was extremely underrated in the styling department, one of the best for the era. Funny the 56 Golden Hawk has more Packard in it than the actual Packard Hawk with Packard's 352 V-8, though apparently this caused handling issues as it was too heavy for the Studebaker and made it incredibly nose heavy. 57 they changed it to the Studebaker 289 with the McCulloch supercharger, made the same 275 hp with a much lighter engine and improved the handling characteristics considerably. Second choice, I pride myself as an independent man but would have to go with Caddie can't deny that it's a gorgeous car.

That last category was really weird because those cars are too totally different cars. They’re behemoth, especially the Lincoln the Lincoln’s almost as long as city block not really, but it is a rather big car… and those two cars cost more than the Packard.. i’m with you this is not my favorite Packard by any means I think my favorite Packard of all time is a 1934 LeBaron body roadster I really like those not sure how many they made but I’ll probably never own one but who knows pre-market keeps going down.. those might be affordable one day
Market is all over the place. I’ve been looking at airflow prices and Hudson hornet prices. Frankly I like Hudson hornets I can’t believe those aren’t worth more money they’re drastically underrated for what they are… I believe one day the independence stuff is going to catch on. I just think that it needs to be brought into the light so to speak because a lot of those cars people don’t even know exist…

Packard were square formal cars that didn't hesitate to add on more pounds. The combination would leave any engineers confused on what to do next. In consideration of the Studebaker Hawk's upright trapezoidal grille and the Packard Hawk's use of a fiberglass hood and guppy nose, might it not have made more sense to create a front clip with the Packard ox-yoke grille, something like _The Request_ show car, and taillights resembling the '56 _Executive_ and _Clipper_ "slipper"-type that were carried over to the '57 sedans? Something to give the Packard _Hawk_ an attractive and distnctive look?
I've seen photos of a clay model proposal by Howard "Dutch" Darrin of a Packard 5-passenger sports car proposal with a fiberglass body and a front clip combining the profile of the '53 Starlight grille with a sloped heart-shaped interpretation of the traditional Packard grille.

The death of Packard started with the birth of the clipper line. You don't survive as a high line car by selling a car for the masses. As for 1958, being the end of Packard, that sad event came in 1956. A Studabaker is a Packard like a VW is a Cadillac. My uncle has a 1956 Carabeain. I was lucky enough to get a ride in that car. It was the raer hardtop, white roof, red body with black rockers. My uncle wouldn't drive a clipper if they were free. Nor would he drive that

Hi Jay, Another great video, and one that is dear to my heart. But before getting into all of that, I have to say the Gilmore museum is not just a place to definitely see if you are in the area. It should be a must see destination for any car enthusiast. It is awesome. I spent two days there enjoying their amazing displays.
Should Packard have merged with Peerless, and Pierce Arrow, to stay alive during the great depression? I am not sure if that would have helped. I think make the necessary cost reductions on expensive, relatively low volume cars, instead of continuing to design and manufacture three separate makes they would have had to badge engineer the three Ps.
Packard had no choice but to come up with a cheaper, higher volume car or they would have died along with many independents due to the long financial crisis. Packard was on the right track introducing a mid-priced car to improve volume, but they should have made it an entirely separate make, with no mention of Packard. That way they could improve their bottom line without cheapening the brand. What they did was part of the reason they failed eventually, but without it, it would have happened twenty years earlier.
I say part of the reason because there were other factors. Coming out of the war years Packard cars were nothing like their prewar models. I read in a book on Packard that they moved their tooling outside and covered them up with a tarp to prepare for war production. After four long years in the elements they were ruined. The cars they built in the late forties were bulbous, stodgy, and uninspiring. They looked nothing like the high quality luxury automobiles from before. Although they finally got this corrected by the mid-fifties, it was too little too late.
Another big blow to Packard was Chrysler’s purchase of Packard’s body manufacture, Brigs. This forced them to build their own bodies in a smaller, inadequate plant, resulting in horrible quality control issues, destroying whatever premium make image Packard still had. It was so sloppy some cars were actually shipped without essential components as starters and generators, according to a book on Packard.
The time to merge was when the market was still hot and the big four independents were still financially sound in 1948. Yes I think all four independents should have merged to give them a strong product mix. It would have required putting big egos aside. It could have worked. What could have been, we will never know. But the rushed merger of failing companies was doomed to fail. In retrospect, they should have brought along Willis too, seeing how Jeep is the only make still surviving.
I read books one from the perspective of each company, on what caused Packard- Studebaker to fail. Packard said Studebaker was in much worse financial shape then they let on, but the Studebaker book said the same about Packard, which had a much lower volume. You can’t merge two companies in dire straits and expect it to succeed.
It was decided by the company brought to manage Packard- Studebaker, in hoping for a last minute Hail Mary to save the business by making all the cars in South Bend. Of course the Packard were just rebadged Studebakers. In 1957 they tacked on enough Packard trim and styling cues to make them appear sort of Packard-esq. However in 1958 they did not even try. The cars were a total abomination. As sad end to a great make.
WYR 1. 1956 Studebaker Hawk. , Honorable mention 1964 GT. WYR 2 None of the above. 1958 was a terrible year for car design. GM even messed up Chevy. The Packard Hawk was an ugly, no make that hideous, and no effort abomination. As hard as it is to believe the Lincoln was worse, it just was not a final offence to Packard loyalists. I don’t care for the Cadillac either but if forced to pick I guess that would be it.

A Studebaker by any other name, although this is an interesting car. I like that front grille, and that textured area on the sides of the fins. And the padded dash is nice. Still, I can’t quite get past the realization this is an upscale Studebaker.
For WYR, I would probably go with the ‘64 Gran Turismo….probably because my father once drove a ‘62 and it looked a lot like this one….and (believe it or not) the ‘58 Hawk because it looks a lot more fun to drive than the Lincoln or the Cadillac.

5:30 The Studebaker 289 was no lightweight, and with the supercharger it weighed within about 50 pounds of the Packard 352. Also, the supercharged Studebaker might have produced the same advertised horsepower, it was about 47 pound-feet dhy on the torque rating (333 versus 380). These figures are of course, SAE Gross ratings, not the more realistic "Net" numbers that became the standard advertising figures in 1971-'72.

The Packard Hawk had about the upholstered pad outside of the driver's window so that one could lower the window and hang their elbow out in 50's driving fashion and not have to rest on sheet metal. I cannot remember if it was leather or vinyl, but a strange call either way.

The crazy thing is on this car. It wasn’t leather it was more like a hard vinyl almost like a hard plastic material. @@What.its.like. I examined one in about 1970 and it was soft, like foam covered with vinyl. Strange even then. I thought it was the most hideous nose job I'd ever seen. A Packard stylized version of the Studebaker Hawk grille would have been far more appropriate. Almost like the car was being euthanized. Doubly strange since Packard had not had a sporty car in the post-war lineup.

Winton Engine - did they eventually specialize in making marine and submarine engines? Seems that GM bought them out just as GM contemplated getting into the railroading/locomotive business and eventually reengineered a Winton design to create the EMD 567 famous locomotive engine. Maybe if they'd used a more traditional Packard grille like the '48-'50 Custom Eight, or the '56 _The Request_ show car I could consider the '58 Packard Hawk, but the best I can say of the Packard Hawk was it's less hideous than the '58 Lincoln.
