I had this!!! I worked in summer 2000 to buy MD player, I lived in Ex USSR country LATVIA. That summer I had US peace corp worker living in our family and he ordered one of ebay for me, it had to be shipped via USA embasy as no ebay seller would ship straight to LATVIA, so at the end I got mine like half the price, it would be in a shop. I think it was like $130 and it took more than month of my summer wages............but I was the only one in my high school to have one.

The reason for this unit having a lower model number is due to the fact that this unit is considered a more basic model then the R55. At the time Sony was looking to offer a lower cost unit in their portable MD line up. Hence the reason for the slightly lower performance and more basic accessories such as the non LCD remote control.

Probably one of my favorite players. If it weren't for the lack of MDLP, I'd probably still be using that over my MZ-NH600D.

This was my first MD player/recorder. I still have it and it's still working. :-) I also have MZ-NHF800 and then the last and greatest one Sony created, MZ-RH1, specifically, MZ-M200 (the one with the included stereo microphone). I love everything MD. I have loads of 1GB Hi-MDs which I bought from Amazon and now very rare and expensive. :-) I don't think I can live without them. Hehehe.

Hello there fellow minidisc brother. Gotta say I love the videos! Was wondering if you could do a video on how to make labels for the discs.
Anyway, keep up the excellent work with all things minidisc! Minidisc forever!

R37 was Sony's first attempt at producing a cost reduced Minidisc recorder. A cross between the R50 and R55 I would say, but with more plastic usage in the chassis, and of course basic remote and standard AA batteries. Not even sure if it shipped with a power adapter?

I actually *have* one of these! It still works! But the volume rocker no longer works and mine didn't come with a remote, so I don't use it on my commute, it's my recorder. Instead my gently used MZ E44 is my daily player. I recently got back into dedicated audio as smartphones seem to be moving away from headphone jacks and decent DAC systems.

Thank you very much for your simple and easy demonstration on how this mi iDisk player is working and what feature it has got comparing with the one you had already . I was so impressed from your didactical demonstration that I suddenly,by chance, I found one on e.bay. Unfortunately the operating instructions will not be given and so I shall have for one on google, I think?
Thanks very much and if I have questions I shall try to ask you eventually.

Had this unit that bought new when it released and it had that same janky remote unit. I felt ripped off, until i learned the more tactile remote was far easier to operate with it in your pocket. Solid machine though. nostalgia feels.

One thing I liked on MD player is that you can put a title of a song of an artists not unliked some of a discman.

Hello freund333, cheers from Brazil!! Im keeping in touch with you just to let you know that I found a Sony MZ-R37SP and im just wondering if you can tell me what does that SP after 37 means. All I can say is that my remote control is a little bit different from yours and the MD is exactly the same. Let me know if you have some clue about this SP thing kind regards and keep up with all excellent videos about minidisc

      @freund333  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The "normal" version came out in 1999 and the SP version in 2000. The SP version ships without an AC adapter and is suppose to have a slightly better battery life. Playback time with two AA batteries is 13 hours on the "normal" version and 15.5 hours on the SP version.

i bought a number of Sony's MD players (after a girlfriend from Japan had first given me one). The screw on attachable battery compartment on the older unit on the Right would become a problem after a while.. the battery connection would get temperamental.. sometimes not working.. The unit with the battery compartment housed inside it is way better.

I don't know if you're in or from America, but that's traditionally(however unfortunately) HOW at least CONSUMER grade electronics TEND to be here... A NEW release doesn't always mean things were improved. I kind of blame consumers who are constantly buying the latest released model of something, even if they just bought the previous iPhone the week before!! To me, that told companies that, these idiots are going to buy the newest model no matter WHAT stuff we leave out or add in. I personally have and to this DAY...enjoy the R37 model.
Fortunately, I bought MINE at a Sony OUTLET store where most items if not all of them, are refurbished. Now, in the case of this Mini Disc, some jerk wad stole my previous one right from my LOCKED locker from inside my backpack, of course when I reported it first to my Band director he stupidly said the same thing the office administrators basically said, which was, why would you bring a new stylish device like that with you TO school!? Basically taking the robbers' side. Thanks assholes. Oh well, it was a BLUE Magnavox monstrosity and I really ONLY missed my ability to play or record the discs...not so much the player itself. Probably some poor bastard what couldn't use it anyway because that model REQUIRED the wired remote to operate it at all! I found out from him years later he DID have that problem, so instead of just being nice, this complete fuck head just tossed it in the trash!! $120 of my parents' hard earned money as a Christmas gift and this soulless, monster steals it, can't figure out how it works and says fuck it and throws $120 IN THE TRASH. I was worried for days I would literally murder this guy just because I'd gone a little insane just know who stole it. If I HAD found out about him trashing it, then... I might STILL be in maximim security in Huntsville. I kid you NOT!
However my folks were on my side and said well we can at least buy you a refurbished one in the mean time, since my Bday was coming up in months and said if it's broke by then or you just want a better or new one, we'll get you that or give you the money and you can see if you get money or gift cards to Best Buy from friends or aunts so you can really buy a nice one....for your Bday.
Well, here I am, close to 30 YEARS later...and aside from a few minor issues like one of the REW or FF buttons seemed to have lost it's under spring that kept it lined up and IN the up position with the rest of the buttons, but that just means I have to press a little harder to move to the next track...big deal, and if I WANTED I COULD just attach that remote control to it and Fast Forward from there... Which if you're just getting one I recommend using the remote control for the simple playback, REW and FF functions as to NOT wear out the buttons that really DO require so much pressing since they are for multiple thing than JUST FF or REW. Just a suggestion. The display is acting up too as if it's going out, yet a simple tap on the front of it where the display is, sort of wakes it up again. I suspect its simple cracked or a broken soldered joint that's just cracked so it's making contact better again with that tapping, however I'm not stupid and KNOW that most likely one day it's just not going to display anything... SO I suppose when that day comes I'll be looking around to find either a really nice used one like your found, or maybe even a New Old Stock model, but I'm totally in love with the Mini Disc format... These later ones, TO ME sound as good as a CD and I know about the CD algorithm not being right either but I think these yuppie audiophiles are like LOOKING for imperfection sometimes... I mean jeez how are some of them dating or MARRIED when you're THAT picky... alot of the issues I've heard them bitch about, can be easily fixed or made a HELL of a lot better with the use of a nice Kenwood or Yamaha(Natural Sound) amplifier! Hell, that's what I use ALONE but I bet if I also added in something like a 20 ban EQ in line before or after that amplifier... I'd look JUUUUUST like the dude, sitting in the easy chair, with his scarf, from the Maxell ad(except a wheelchair) pleased and rolled a foot back if my brakes aren't locked!!

Wow, I love that little minidisc rack. Did you make it? As for the player, not so much love. Too big, tiny display, wobbly buttons on the front panel, and probably takes one of those awful gum stick batteries. But it looks cool.

If my sony mz-r700 didn't randomly make skips in recordings I would use it all the time. Having physical media respects the artist more I feel.. for my sake not for theirs.
And in 2020 it's more compact than a phone or mp3 players.

I had one of these and someone stole it, never got another one cos MiniDisc was already dying at that point. Now I regret it since I have a bunch of old MiniDiscs I want to listen to and these things go for $300-400 on Amazon....
