    Donyboy73, thanks for all the great videos. I have used your tutorials on all my chainsaw, lawnmower and snowblower fixes. Your videos are very informative and you have saved me a lot of money as well as taught me a lot. I hate having to get someone else to fix something for me if I can learn to do it myself.
    I am having a bit of a challenge diagnosing my latest problem and hopefully you can help me out or point me to a video you may already have (that I have missed). I have a 27" Murray Snowblower and today while using it, I noticed that I seemed to have a lack of power. Sometimes while in 1st or 2nd gear, the snowblower would not propel itself. I later checked the idler pulley and it appeared to be in good shape and tight enough. I then heard a scraping noise from inside the housing. I determined that the augers were still spinning, however, the left side of the auger blade (if you were standing at the controls) was now scraping the side of the housing assembly and gouging the metal. I removed the shear pin to stop that side of the auger from spinning temporarily until I can figure this out. The shear pin was in tact, although it had a slight bend in it. Once the shear pin was removed, the hole in the auger blade would no longer line up with the shear pin hole in the shaft. It appears to have misaligned by 1/4". There is a 1/4" gap between the auger blade and the bushing on the housing assembly, however, I cannot slide the blade to align the holes because the end of the blade is pushing against the housing assembly.
    I can't understand why the auger blade just began doing this. Is it possible the the gearbox and/or impeller has misaligned and is now on an angle causing the scraping? If you could provide any guidance on how to troubleshoot this, it would be greatly appreciated. Another Nova Scotia winter snowfall is coming soon and I want to be ready. Thanks again Donyboy!

      +Colby Smith sounds like parts of the auger may be bent, usually a large pair of pliers or a hammer can straighten it out, then it shouldn't rub on anything

    • @GuyFromNS
      @GuyFromNS 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +donyboy73 You were right! The end of the auger was bent 45 degrees. It actually looked like it was supposed to be bent like that, however, I used a hammer to straighten it out and now it clears all obstacles and is working perfectly. Thanks for the quick response and keep up the great work!

    This is still a useful video for MTD repair. The one recommendation I would make is to use locktite on the bolt holding on the flywheel belt pulleys to the drive shaft. I used blue the first time it came loose (factory torque failed), and used red after the 2nd time that bolt worked loose. Red did the trick, and haven't had an issue with that bolt since. After 18 years of service my MTD gearbox failed today on the first snow of this season. It's pretty heavily rusted....not sure if it worth trying to repair

    Great thank for the very helpful video! I managed to a snag a tennis ball-sized rock in the auger (buried in deep snow) and thought I'd killed my gear box. I got lucky and only clobbered the shear pin and bent the blade tip. But if the box lets go, I'm good to go on repairing it. Good on ya!

When I remove the shear bolts what kind of oil do I put in there. There is no nipple for a grease gun anywhere. Thanks

    I have a yardworks 48" snowblower. The propeller spins but the augar doesn't. I can move the augar by hand no problem with the brake on. does anyone know if a Ryobi 10hp 28 augur front will fit on a yardman 8.5hp 26inch front. it looks exactly the same, but the motor is obviously slightly less powerful and the mouth is a few inches bigger. It surprisingly looks like it could work, but before I rip it appart to find nothing lines up has anyone else tried this.
    the yardman is mine, in good condition but it stripped the gearbox bad, steal shaft and the gear. the Ryobi I just picked up at a scrap yard for 12 bucks. broken gas tank, no handles, probably a bad engine.

    This is a case of 'false economy', because it really did not need much work doing to it. Some mechanical aptitude and the previous owners would have realised the problem and made what is essentially a new machine from the bits.
    Nice clear explanations thanks.

    Wait a minute Donyboy. . . How did you get that auger and impeller assembly out of the housing ? 1:35
    You seemed to have skipped that part buddy.
    I can't get mine out. The auger bearing on the drive shaft seems to only come out from the rear, while the shaft is attached from the front with two very hard to reach steel pins. Can't get a hammer in to them. Can't force the bearing out the front.

    Thanks for the snowthrower videos but I think I have an issue you havent covered. My snowthrower is a MTD two stage, I broke the shaft on it, replace it (with new shear pins) and now it seems one side throws snow properly (right) but the left side seems to just push the snow in front. It is almost as if the auger is wrong. Can anyone give me any suggestions? I live in Michigan and we have quite a bit of snow. Snow coming out of the chute seems to be heavy on the right side and light on the left side. The left side is also the side that seems to not be working correctly. Thanks for all the videos!

      @JodBronson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +damma723 - Sounds like you put your Auger back on backward. Does it Spin? If it does and snow is " not " going the right way, more likely you put it on backward.

    • @Speeddemon3
      @Speeddemon3 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi damma, if you replaced the shaft and shear pin it will be rotating at the same rpm as the right side. The only thing that would possibly slow it down could be replacing the auger with one that doesn't have the same spline ratio for snow ingestion. Take a large tie wrap and tie your auger handle down and step in front of the machine to get a look to see if it's rotating properly.

  • @semtech30

    I see for a shear bolt, you put in a standard threaded bolt and nut on the auger. Unless they are specific shear rated, a standard bolt is to hard. This is a reason for the gear box damage as the harder shear bolt would not break. The gears do instead. Jaming a branch, brick, rock, or kids toy in the auger will cause a sudden stop and breakage.

    I just watch the video and it looks like you favor replacing the gearbox, maybe because you have them. I haven't taken mine apart, but I'm sure something is broke inside. I guess 12 years of Michigan snow have done it in. Although I did find it interesting about not making shear bolts tight. So I think I might have shortened the life of this part because I usually make my shear bolts snug. I don't really tighten these with a lot of power, just enough so the shear bolts don't spin.
    Could you have just changed the worm gear on the blower from this video?

    • @donyboy73
      @donyboy73  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      sometimes yes you can change just the gear , but the gear on the impeller shaft usually needs changing as well

  • @sunshineman68
    @sunshineman68 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I forgot to mention that I couldn't find a video that included removing the shaft from the housing. It looked like an easy thing, but since I didn't see anything I ended up taking the bearing retainer plate to see if something else was needed, but didn't see anything. I gave it a couple of taps with a brass hammer, then some anti rust spray, let it sit, and tried the brass hammer touch. Nothing was happening, so I took it into a shop for repair. Here in Michigan we need our snowblowers this year, but I don't think Michigan needs me to be here while all this snow is coming

      well, found out the hard way why you skipped showing how to get the driveshaft out from the bearings. I saw on another video that the shaft was seized to the bearing and the guy had to hit it with a sledge to get it out. I had wood over the spines so I didn't damage them, but some how they still flanged out and now the pulley retaining piece won't slip back onto the spins. Going to have to replace the entire gearbox setup.

      Did you try squeezing the hand levers on the handles of the machine to disengage drive wheels?

    I found 2 ball bearings just laying in the chute. where are they from. is it easy to fix. thanks for any and all help. Dave

    • @donyboy73
      @donyboy73  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dave Marsh might be from the impeller bearing

    • @davemarsh7850
      @davemarsh7850 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +donyboy73 ok. which im guessing means the auger comes off, or the whole chute comes off?

    • @donyboy73
      @donyboy73  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dave Marsh if it's the impeller bearing then the blower will have to be split in half, the auger pulley removed and it will there behind it

      +donyboy73 Ok thanks, is this only place bearings would fall out of or is there a simpler place I should look

    • @donyboy73
      @donyboy73  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dave Marsh usually the only place, without seeing your specific blower I can't be 100% sure

    do you know what kind of fluids or gear lube goes inside the auger gear box?

      type "00" grease

      type 00 grease ... Yes here's some detail: MTD specs a low temp EP grease.
      Local small engine shop provided me Lubriplate "Low-Temp Multi-Purpose" pn# L0172-098 it's inexpensive, but local Shucks Auto parts doesn't stock it or equivalent

    Salut Don,
    I think I've detected a bit of a French Canadian accent... but I'm going to go ahead and ask my question in English, in case I'm wrong... :)
    I have one of those tractor mounted snow thrower from MTD (model OEM-190-823).
    My auger gear seems all messed up. I'd like to take the assembly out WITHOUT taking the whole Impeller assembly out in the process. There are a couple of spirol pins on the shaft that goes through the Impeller. Is there a way to remove those pins easily without having to pull the Impeller and/or snow housing assembly?
    If I need to pull everything out... this may just be too much work for me. If I could, however, remove those pins... then the job (with your videos) seems pretty easy.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    P.S. I'm using the user's manual for part names... I have no clue what I'm talking about :)

      yes I'm French, I remove the whole auger system

      C'est bien ce qui m'inquiétait... je vais regarder demain si je peux enlever à partir du coupling, en arrière de l'impeller. Ça ne serait pas si pire, si c'était le cas.
      Merci de ton aide!

    Interesting that most of the snowblowers you repair are MTD-built units......

    Whatever the make, they are all a pain in the ass to repair!! Got a deflated tire (not a flat) and could not remove the rim to have it fixed, how's that??The one i have is a cheap Yardworks bought at Canadian Tire.I don't have a garage to fix and i don't have a pick up truck to bring to the dealer.Darn thing is only 3 years old! Are they made in China???Next step i will take a snow contractor.Voilà!
