  • Last year I DNF'd the Manchester Marathon at mile 7. This year I was determined there would be no repeat of that.
Despite being in hamstring discomfort and pain from 4 miles, I managed to tough it out and record a time outside my goal. However I am proud of the grit and determination I showed to get through this toughest of all running races.

Marathon running is an emotional business at the best of times but even more so when you spend long periods battling through pain and discomfort.
Didn't quite hit your lofty target but a brilliant block of training and a fantastic finish time which will hopefully be enough to get you the Masters qualification.

Well done to finish Dawn despite the injury. This was my seventh time at Manchester, and as the race has increased its numbers and necessarily extended the start process, I have found it harder to warm up as close to my start time as I would normally do. I was fortunate to avoid any on-course problems this time, but wonder if this delay before starting may increase the chances of a tight or pulled muscle once into the race.

    • @tworunningbrooms
      @tworunningbrooms  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks, Gordon. That's a point I covered with John after the marathon. Both years I have now started, I have had problems that had not occurred in training or other races. Manchester is the only race. I've not had a proper warm-up and was stood for 40 mins in a pen waiting to run. This is not good for the muscles, and I believe it could've been why mine decided it was the day to play up. It was also quite cold...Whilst I had an achy hamstring during some long runs, it wasn't pinching like it did on Sunday. So yes, a lack of dynamic warm-up and hanging around probably didn't help!

Other TH-camrs haven’t done this so I am impressed as the emotion at the end was extremely obvious.
One thing that would have been interesting is why you think your hamstring tightened the way it did and how is it now?
Also being experienced in running which you definitely are what caused the tummy issues and was that something out of the blue or what hydration and gels you took on plus frequency.
Finally you are an extremely gutsy, talented and honest athlete and thank you for your videos and wishing you every success for an autumn marathon if there is one.

Thank you for your comments. To answer your questions. I've had some minor issues with my hamstring, but just a dull ache on the insertional section at the top. It's never got bad, but sometimes, during hard runs, I could feel it pulling. I have a bit of a weakness on the right side that I feel I need to address with S&C, so I will focus on this once fully recovered. The hamstring is sore now, but I wouldn't call it an injury. In terms of the stitch, I think it could've been the gels. Throughout my training, I've used SIS. On the last couple of long runs, I tried OTE super gels and they felt okay but I'd not had super ones in a marathon before so maybe just too much.

I don't think there's a running video out there that I could relate to more than this. Slightly different circumstances but we absolutely shared these 3 things.
    1) We had a troublesome very early stage
    2) We thought about our previous experience in Manc, you being a DNF and for me both times having a horrific time broken in survival mode in the last 5-7km.

I’ve only run a couple of marathons but it’s the only distance I can think of where those training for it never reach that distance or go beyond it. 20 miles is usually the place a lot of people struggle (average Joe) but surely there is some correlation between that being the longest run that takes place in training and struggling on the day….. 🤔

Thanks, Lee, I guess the attraction of the marathon is all the challenges. 🙂

Dawn you didn't mention Heart Rate, was the HR ok throughout? Really gutted that you didn't achieve your sub 3.30 goal as you have trained so hard but you did exceptionally well to somehow did deep to finish under 3.40 with a dodgy hamstring & stitch. Well done for crossing that finish line, getting that medal and putting the disappointment of 2023 behind you 👏👏👏💪💪

My HR was below marathon HR as the pulling hamstring was not allowing me to increase pace. Onwards with the next one in mind... 😁

Thanks, Todd. You win some, you lose some...I'm fine with it now though as I know I did what I could on the day. Nice seeing you this week. 🙂
