  • Home Assistant Cloud, or Nabu Casa as it is some times known, is an excellent companion service for Home Assistant. In this video I'll show you why it's worth paying for and explain how you can set it up to get the most out of it.

    You answered a bunch of questions that I didn't understand regarding what this is, what it does.
    Yes. I want/need this.
    Thanks!!

      Too much talkl and too little useful information in my opinion. Close to zero demonstration - and the app.. what app ?

    I love the cloud option and for the little money it costs you also support the home assistant founders!. I had already set up the manual remote configuration, inclusive tts, but I think cloud is the way forward, especially with integration of remote programming of esphome devices

    I pay for a static IP, but now that I'm about to restart my HA journey I will seriously consider Nabu Casa for two reasons:
    1) Supporting the great team behind it all!
    2) Simplicity/consistency. I remember how tricky it was to set up remote access manually, and it often dropped out for some reason - supporting while getting a simpler setup is truly a win-win!

      Since this video was made you get a ton more benefit from Home Assistant cloud including a more private voice assistants and Speech to Text!

    100% agree with getting nabu casa!

    Hard agree about supporting the project.
    I'm actually one of those 'incredibly technical' guys. I set up everything to access my instance for free, without a fixed IP while being behind a NAT. Including custom support for Alexa with code I wrote myself.
    Giving 5 bucks to help a bit supporting this awesome team creating this software it's honestly the least I could do. Plus I get to remove everything I rolled on my own and depend on the capable people working at Nabu Casa, instead of having that burden on me all the time.

    Strange to suggest that you need to pay for a static IP, as though Dynamic DNS hasn't been a thing for decades

    • @HomeAutomationGuy
      @HomeAutomationGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My last ISP NAT'd me so I couldn't forward any ports unless I paid extra for a static IP. Unfortunately Dynamic DNS didn't help squat as the ports were blocked upstream.

    Hello Home Automation Guy,
    can you explain to me how to spot MITM attack from Nabu Casa, as they can see everything if they want!
    From Nabu Casa:
    Our approach has one single weakness that is unavoidable: since we own the domain that hosts the remote connection, we are able to issue our own certificate and man-in-the-middle attack (MITM) remote connections.
    Thx

    Does it allow using the phone app to send voice commands remotely?

    Did I miss something in the video. I got it working but how do I get Google Home to trun on a lite? Is there a special Wake word? So how do I test it actually works?

    If I connect my Google Assistant via Nabu Casa cloud, wouldn't there be any privacy issues? As Google will get info on my smart home. Or is this encrypted aswell?

    Thanks for a nice video! I know I should probably be asking Nabu Casa questions in Nabu Casa forums rather than here, but since I bumped into your review, I'll start from here. My question is: do you know how the Google Assistant (or Amazon Alexa, but that's of a lesser interest for me as I don't use it) integration via Nabu Casa is handled, if you set up your mobile app the way you suggested in the video, i.e. by specifying a home SSID and internal URL so that your device is directly connected to HA instance when you're at home? In other words, if my phone connects to HA "directly", will I lose the voice assistant controls I set up via Nabu Casa?
    Thanks!

    • @HomeAutomationGuy
      @HomeAutomationGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You shouldn't lose the voice commands when you're connected directly. The App just checks what SSID you are connected to and either uses the Nabu Casa URL if you're outside your home Wifi or the local URL if you're inside. The functionality remains the same either way.
      Home Assistant will connect to the Google Assistant or Alexa APIs for you directly via the internet, it doesn't use your phone for any of those functions. Hope I understood your question correctly and was able to help!

    Can you redo this for the newest version of Home Assistant

    You don't need the subscription to use TTS to things like google speakers/displays. I have HA playing a message on all my smart speakers when he doorbell i pressed. Don't get me wrong i think supporting the dev's for small change is well worth it.

    I just got update OS v7 from HA and the Nabu Casa setup not longer show up. Any idea how to set this up?

      You might need to add it to your configuration.yaml file.

    Thanks for your view of the things. But for me I would rather pledge 5 € without anything in return. I am not using amazon echo / google assistant anyway. The reason why I have choosen Homeassistant is the fact that it should remain without a cloud and not rely on it. I am also afraid if I am getting used to Nabu Casa and it may shutdown in future, that would annoy me.

      It seems that they moved it to Configuration -> Companion App since I recorded this video!

    I move homes in a couple months, so i will need a new router, which will mean a new ip. If I have the subscription service, will I be able to transfer my home assistant from my current home to my new one with ease or what is that process like?

    • @HomeAutomationGuy
      @HomeAutomationGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question! Your home assistant makes a connection outwards from your internet to the Nabu Casa cloud, which then opens up the secure channel. It doesn't matter if your IP or Internet connection changes, it will work perfectly fine without you needing to reconfigure anything.

    An alternative to Nabu Casa would be to use something like ZeroTier One or TailScale. No ports to open, and completely free if you only have a few devices to connect up.

    • @HomeAutomationGuy
      @HomeAutomationGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is true. But I'm happy to pay to support Nabu Casa, which in turn supported the Home Assistant community

    Next question As I have all my devices already setup in GH, how do I migrate them to HA?

    • @HomeAutomationGuy
      @HomeAutomationGuy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You'll need to set them up in Home Assistant, you can't migrate them as far as I know.

    Being a "cloud" service. If I was to use Nabu casa with Google hub to turn this or that off.. is there still going to be latency going up to google.. to trigger the switch etc?

    • @HomeAutomationGuy

      Also wouldn’t that be a privacy concern sending our HA devices info to google or amazon? I know you spoke about not exposing the entity to google but it would be nicer if you could clarify what exactly google/amazon could see. If i say a command to google control my HA integrated device would that allow google/amazon to store what I am sayin and learn about the devices that I use?

  • @daBernd
    @daBernd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Honestly, I tried Home Assistant just because I didn't want the cloud. I also don't want to pay for private information that is stored somewhere in unknown locations, with the owner of the cloud making money from that information themselves. Can you guarantee that no such information will be stored after all? Call me paranoid, but we live in a world where it's hard enough to keep these companies' hands out of private matters. So I don't need anything like that anymore.
    Also, it's quite annoying that some integrations, such as B. VeSync, then “need” a cloud to function. For me that means being forced to use the cloud. No thanks.

    Do some research before you publish these videos, port forwarding is not the only option to connect remotely. Cloud flare tunnels is another option that doesn't require any port forwarding and is completely free and works great. Video downvoted 👎

    • @HomeAutomationGuy
      @HomeAutomationGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But do Cloudflare tunnels give you voice assistant integration, Text to speech and speech to text, as well as fund the development of Home Assistant? No

    • @reeevoooo
      @reeevoooo 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HomeAutomationGuy Supporting the development is completely optional. Some people may not be able to a afford it, so your point is null and void. You stated there was only two options available to remotely connect. There isn't. Tacking on your additional points is also completely irrelevant to my original comment.
