The Advance Variation is the most precise way for white to fight the Caro-Kann Defense, but it's also an extremely solid position for black, who creates a pawn triangle in the center and resolves the problem of „the bad bishop“.
For the introduction to the Caro-Kann watch this video: • Caro-Kann Defense (int...
Caro-Kann Defense, B12 Advance Variation - Chess Openings for Tournament Players
The advance variation became the most popular way for white to fight the Caro-Kann, it even surpassed the main lines which occur after 3.Nc3 for white. White simply advances his e pawn, gaining central space and getting more room for maneuvering. In exchange, black is able to play Bf5 fast, getting rid of his potentially worst piece, and he can then close down his pawn triangle with e6. Black thus has a perfectly solid central structure and white gets more space in exchange.
There are many approaches to the Advance Caro-Kann for white (and white gets to choose the variation on move 4). Here are the most common lines:
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 - Short Variation (the positional approach for white, simply developing, castling short and using the space advantage later on)
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 - Van der Wiel Attack (a very aggressive line for white, black is sacrificing his h5 pawn in exchange for some queenside initiative but both sides have great attacking chances)
Game to study: Shirov vs Topalov 2008 Olympiad
    1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. Nc3 e6 5. g4 Bg6 6. Nge2 c5

@@HangingPawns Yeah I just wanted to say thanks for making these. You are by far my favorite chess resource. Every time my opening gets crushed with some new variation I come back here and you always provide thorough summaries and good references for where to get more information. just a side note: for those who like me plays 3. ... c5 in response to advance variation it would be helpful to look at GM Igor Khenkin games. He scored very good in this variation. Someday maybe I will learn the main line with Bf5 but it seems to me to be very theoretical heavy.

how do you only have 3.3k subs? you have so much really good in depth content and its organized nicely in playlists. I don't get it. The only thing I can note is your accent is pretty thick and normally people don't like to listen to a thick accent for so long. But that doesn't explain only 3.3k on such a good channel.

    Fantastic explanation.
You are talking that after 5. c4 in Tal/c4 we need to think about the dark square bishop and how to exchange it. What is a drawback of pining the knight in Tal after c4 (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.h4 h5 5. c4 Bb4) and echanging it with the knight before white shuts down the diagonal with c5? What is the purpose of …,Be4? (at 5:32 in the video?) I have seen this move in other videos and I don’t understand it. It appears to move the bishop twice in the opening for no obvious reason. If it’s to clear f5 for the knight, why not Bg6? If it’s to trade off the bishop, why not Bg4?

I used to do that when I was playing e4 as white XD. I played the Caro Kann also (but with 3. ... c5) and I really liked idea of using the bishop as a tempo gainer for expanding on the king side and most likely attacking that side. It always caused the opponents to resign early.
But the 3. ... c5 variation also has lines against it (which is why nearly everyone recommends bf5 instead) but I have not faced a single opponent who knows the slightest amount of theory about it.

question: in two lines, you show what will happen if c5, but what if white moves c3 to try to replace the pawn on d4 when you take it? what is the plan if white's e5 pawn is not weakened? do you somehow target the d4 pawn? thanks, love your vids!

    • @HangingPawns
      @HangingPawns  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, white's main disadvantage is the weak center, which is the point of the variation for black. White has space and all, but black is the one trying to crash through in the center. c5 is an almost must play move for black and it often weakens d4 or e5 indirectly. c3 does defend d4 but after takes takes leaves a backward d4 pawn for white which often becomes a target. That being said though, it's not a bad move.

If 3 c5 was so amazing, why isn't it the mainline?

Mainlines can change over time if the top players prefer this move over the "old mainline"

    Great video, very informative.
I have a question about the light-squared bishop though.
    - In the 5...c5 variation of the main line (short variation), you mention that you don't move the bishop but protect it with Ne7 because you want to get rid of the bishop.
    - In the Bronstein variation however you do move the bishop instead of protecting it with Ne7.
    Why is that?

Exactly what I needed. Just played a game against the advance short variation and my follow-up wasn't great. Had no room to operate. Won, but I shouldn't have. Now I know how to turn it to my advantage.

    That's what i've found in an old greek chess book(1967).It's from the White's point of view:4.c4 e6 5.Nbc3 dxc4 6.Bxc4 Nge7 7.Nge2 Nbd7 8.0-0 Ndb6 9.Bb3 Qd7 10.a4 (in order to prevent Black's Quineside castling)10...a5 11.Neg3 Bg6 with the White intending f4 & f5

I don't see why black shouldn't play dc after white goes c4. By going dc black has the d5 square for his knight. I think it's much more dangerous to allow white to clamp the entire center with c5 than to hand white's bishop a tempo with dc.

What i play in that horrible line for white( 17:17 ) is Qa5+ and after that Qa4. If the queens are exchanged mating attacks aren't gonna happen and develops my knight. If they aren't exchanged then it's hard to castle kingside for white.

I face 3...c5 a lot and always replied with 4. c3 like in French advanced (mixed results - usually feel good there),... anyone know what is wrong with that? It didnt cross my mind to take :D

In the van der wiel attack why is h6 slow? Also why does black play c5 before h5 or h6 when the upcoming threat to the bishop is obvious. I've been trying to use this opening but people in my elo don't usually know the main line and I end up getting one of those responses and idk what to do as white to punish

In the advance variation with c5, could you do a video on how to respond to Bb5+? It would really help me. The comp says to block with bishop but couldn’t the knight block be better. Thanks and hope you are doing well in your tournament!
