I think the audience was in shock of what they were seeing. The country (and the world) was still very conservative and everything was so censored back then, depending on which part of the country they were in. No women and men (except James Brown) performed as intense like Tina did back then.
As a big Tina fan I am so happy to see this footage. I've been hoping to see this particular performance for over 10 years now ever since i got a glimpse of it for her 60th birthday special. Thank you!

Ike never wanted them to perform this song or record it because I believe he didn't like it, Tina insisted cause she loved it......she won that battle. Love you Tina.
I don't think either of them liked it that's why they re-worked the way it was sung and performed. I believe Tina said she thought it was too weak and wimpy to perform on stage as it was so they re-worked it.

There is an early 70's DECCA interview (from 1971 I think) that Tina says she only started to like recording with Ike when she listened to Proud Mary in London and then brought to him the speaking part idea.
Considering he had a bust string at 1:45 and had to restring and tune it, all while still performing his vocals, I think he did more than ok to be playing anything. To top it all off, his guitar lead then pulls his mic stand over at 5:36 as he starts his solo and he has to stop to pick it up before resuming. Nightmare few minutes but he keeps his composure throughout... God knows what was going through his head at the time, though!

That she's very popular proves less than zero. The American public reveres plenty of entertainers that are not particularly talented-it's nothing new.
