THANK YOU, Sir, for your service. My won father flew one mission in a B-17, at the very end of the war. He had to replace the tail gunner that flight who became violently ill (booze, probably). Sat in vomit for several hours, never fired a shot. Dropped all their bombs in the Channel on the way home -- no place to target because of weather.
No, I don't have the numbers or bomb group ID, and he's gone, now. God bless all of them.

Thank you for your service. And thank you for sharing. I'm some what of war buff. And from every one I spoke to, and all the after action reports, and journals I've read. The tail gunner and ball gunner were the 2 most fired upon stations when the main fuselage was targeted. And the German planes half way through the war were using at the SMALLEST 13mm MG 131 Heavy machines (bigger then the American 50.cal Heavy Machine Guns) 20mm MG/FF's, MG 151/20 and Mk 108 30mm light machine cannons they out ranged Mr. Wolf's Browning M2 50.cal Heavy Machine Guns. And, the ammunition (especially in the 30mm Auto Cannon) had explosive charges in them. Lots of the casualties had to be hosed out of they're, or what was left of they're stations. A very fortunate man. Rest in peace..

As a young boy In England in 1943 I witnessed these gallant warriors take off on the bombing raids, and saw the badly damaged planes return. The attrition rate was terrible. We also loved it when the "Yanks as we called them gave us kids candy. We had a call to them " Any gum chum" We had the greatest respect for them. Brave men all of them. I still have a badge given to me "The 8th Army Air Corps.
    Salute from Britain,

Quite moving to me for my dad was a ball-turret gunner B-17 8th Army Air Corps 30 missions. He also had a mid air collision and was shot down over Belgium. He only talked about it a few times but was very emotional about his buddies that didn't make it home. He's been gone almost 20 yrs. now and i miss him everyday and watching your brave dad talk reminded me of the courage of these selfless men.

All the surviving soldiers from both sides had experienced things that we cannot even imagine. A girl that I had gone to school with had a father that had fought in WW2 in the ETO. I worked with him after graduation from school, and he became a good friend of mine. Sometimes he would tell me a little about his war experiences. When he passed away, I attended his funeral where I told them I had enjoyed working with him and loved the incite into the war he gave me by telling me his stories. He had never told any of his children or his wife anything of the war. Many of them just couldn't relive those experiences. They were far to painful for them to relive

Amazing. Thank you for recording this man's experience in WW2. I wish I could do the same for pilot 1st Lt Wally D'Aoust. I have the small parachute he dropped over my small town, before his squadron reported for duty with the 8th AAF in Maine, then on to their base in northern England by September, 1943. Ist Lt D'Aoust was later shot down in his B-24 Liberator while on a bombing run over Muenster, Germany, in early November of that year. Although his plane reportedly crashed just off the coast of Holland, his status and that of several of his 10 man crew are still classified as MIA.

my father was a usmc veteran of the 1940 assault on east japan, ww2, korea, and vietnam. i'm a vet of vietnam, iran, grenada, and 21 years of the US Navy's roles ending in desert storm. yes, there were times when fear of it all just melted into resigning to I'm gonna die, and doing the job. but yeah: even landing from a ship i have kissed the ground, and looked up at the american flag and gotten tears in my eyes. thank you for a wonderful story, and god bless him.

Thank you for a fine film about a wonderful man and his compatriots. My father was a tank driver, which sounds safe, but they were big, easy to hit targets. Thankfully, he only suffered severe frostbite. My wife's dad was a waist gunner in the 8th Air Force. His experiences weighed heavily on him, and caused him to break down more than once in later years. At some point she discovered a half-sister, born out of wedlock in England before her dad met her mother in the US. I guess I'm a product of WW II as much as anything. The fathers never met, and are gone these several years, but they had one thing in common - they almost never spoke of the war. Thanks again, you made your grandfather proud, I'm sure.

I cried at the end. It’s not entirely comparable but my grandfather was a pow in a Korean War. And survived. A marine actually helped him escape. And he died when I was a young teenager. Probably like 11 or 13 years old. I miss him a lot. I loved hearing his stories about how he was in the navy and he loved showing off the photo of the ship that he was on. After he passed away I received a bunch of model wwII fighter planes that my grandfather sent to me before he passed because he knew I enjoyed wwii aviation. And I still have them today in my room to remember him by. he was my hero.
He had many metals including a Purple Heart

My father was a Marine tail gunner in the S. Pacific, part of the crew on a P52. While it was considered one of the most lethal positions, he came home after 3yrs of direct action with little more than physical scratches. Emotionally - a different story. He refused to talk about his war until in terminal condition 2009...then gave me a box of pictures from S. Pacific even my mother didn't know about. Hand to hand combat with Japanese, when they didn't have time to get the planes off the ground, island by island assaults, and strafing runs at Japanese warships where they came in low then turned around and strafed again. It was a different generation, certainly the best generation.

The general perception about American servicemen in the UK is that they were brash, overpaid and overfed but when the chips are down, when you are facing extreme danger, none of that matters. This man faced the greatest dangers it is possible to face and somehow came out unscathed, something this current generation can barely conceive, let alone relate to. Practically everyone who testifies like this that I have seen, like this gentleman, is extremely humble and, even after all these years, grateful to be alive. What a great man. The greatest generation. By far...

Thank you so much for producing and sharing this intimate story, and recording a story so rarely spoken of. Seven decades later his pain is still there, brave then brave now, brave forever.
    Mr. Wolf, I salute you!
I once had the privilege to fly in a B-24 cross country. It was a little over an hour in the middle of summer at 5000ft, not the 8 plus hour at 25~30,000 ft bombers would fly where the temperature is always below zero with barely enough oxygen to live. Even with this experience I still cannot imagine how difficult it was for the crew doing this over and over again, pushed to biological limits.
What surprised me in your interview was the wooden wall behind Mr. Wolf, it was the same mold of wood paneling that was in the house I grew up in (built in 1947), and I also had the same plastic cherry cup.
    Thank you, both of you.

These old fellas stories are priceless, bomber command RAF and USAF lost a greater percentage of men than any other service relative to numbers serving. The RAF alone lost 55,543 killed in action out of a total of 125,000 aircrew (a 44.4 percent death rate) a further 8,403 were wounded in action and 9,838 became prisoners of war. The USAF 8th lost 26,000 kia This is more than all Marine casualties in the Pacific. No wonder they called the European bombing campaign 'the trenches in the sky'
