In this video, we take the iniBuilds / Asobo Dornier Do 31 out for a hop, skip and a jump, within Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS).
We will be ferrying the aircraft over to the Paris Air Show, departing out of Oberpfaffenhofen (EDMO) bound for Paris Le Bourget (LFPB), overflying Friedrichshafen (home of the real Do 31) enroute.
Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

Dornier have always designed and built weird, quirky stuff. The Do335 is my favourite.
I remeber seeing this beast for the first time at the Dornier Museum. I was just stunned, never saw something like this before. Cant belive we have it in the sim now.
I don’t know WHAT they were thinking spending all that time modelling such a strange, innovative and quirky aircraft. What we punters REALLY want is yet another A320, identical to the other 8 A320s on offer except for a slightly weathered flight deck!
ITBS though has missed a trick here as this aircraft more than any other deserved an introduction to the Thunderbirds theme. That would have absolutely set the review off perfectly.
Great review though, thank you! I’ll be getting this simply for the novelty value!
Thank god somebody finally acknowledged the A320 oversaturation.
Its the same with the 20 so iterations of the Piper Cub we have. Totally pointless.
First the Dune Ornithopter and now the Razor Crest, how fun! 😂
Hopefully it doesn't blow up!
In my opinion it looks more like the rocket Ajax from the Flash Gordon movie
Hello sir! Great video as always.
I have a funny story about this airplane. When I lived in Southern Oregon, I met the test pilot Dornier hired to fly this beast.
His name was Drury Wood and he was from the golden age of American test pilots, WW2 Navy vet flying corsairs then post war civilian test pilot.
We hit it off as I am a long time aviation guy and chatting further it was evident he was very proud of working for Dornier on this project. I believe he flew it at the Paris and Farnborough air shows around 1969 1970 ish
He was in his late 80s when I met him and one day he showed at my work and gave me a bunch of photos and a video dvd all taken during the project.
After seeing this AC for the sim I need to dig them out of storage and have a look again at them
Small , small world
Nice touch there with the German song. As a German I appreciate this.
Weird choice for a local legend but I like Dornier getting some love.
🇬🇧
Looks fun I just wish the suspension wasn’t as stiff as a rock
MSFS problem, the ground handling and aircraft suspension is non-existent.
It's like a B-29 crossed with War Rocket Ajax from Flash Gordon. Great review as ever.
Fingers crossed you don't get an engine failure and have to make a dreaded 9-engine landing.
I love that msfs has so many bonkers aircraft (even if the quality is variable).
In the comments to see how far I'd have to scroll to see Flash Gordon..
This plane is ridiculously beautiful and I had to buy it. It was inexpensive, so just had to add this incredible machine to my rapidly filling hangar. It is an amazing design and the ergonomics/visibility of the cockpit are remarkable. This is one powerful bird!
Another plane from the past!Instead of some 737-200, 727, 747-200, DC-9...these relics keep coming out! Free or paid...Thank God, there are people who have resurrected these FSX ones, but gentlemen! Finally, could someone develop some "view from the tower like in FS2004 or Fsx?! My opinion!
I wished I watched this video before I bought the aircraft, the fact you can't control throttle yourself made me lose all interest in this addon, big shame as I really like the aircraft
In real life, the throttles were managed by the Copilot. It is just not possible to manage them yourself
@@Jannik_Stein I modded the aircraft so I have full control, it's possible and it's fun. I'm trying to make the mod an easy drag and drop in community and I'll publish it
You can check my channel, there are two videos of it.
@@federico339 ok now you've got my interest
@@Jannik_Stein unfortunately it's a very "hacky" thing, and it doesn't work too well, also until someone decrypts the files I don't think it's going to be possible to have a drag and drop mod, I might do a video explaining what I did and exactly how it work
I just assigned different controls so they work independently as I have throttle control.
So glad to see your review on this one. Thank you.
kind of needs a "Man in the High Castle" mission set..
The lack of supension travel feels a bit wrong. (th-cam.com/video/x3YueCf1JeI/w-d-xo.html) @1:50 ...And they missed the iconic sound of the engines.
yeah the missing howl sucks
I noticed that also!
Unique aircraft, great to have it in the sim. As always your presentation is well done, thoughtful, comprehensive, and …fun! Really enjoyed the video, thank you!!
There's one DO 31 on display near Munich. Been there dozens of times in my childhood. Never imagined i could "fly" one in MCS... simply amazing!
Really happy to see an aircraft that stands out from the others.
Shame there's not really any ground equipment. It's not exactly necessary but I do quite like it for screenshot purposes.
Also the Dornier Museum is well worth a visit if you're ever near Friedrichshafen.
Can easily combine that with a visit to Lindau or Immenstaad am Bodensee for some dinner / drinks at the shores of Lake Constance.
Ah yes, travel tips under a flight simulation video me. Just where they belong
Great review, thanks. Loved the song during the cruise :-)
Another great vid.. Absolutely awesome to see this flying from all perspectives... Would love to have a crack at flying this amazing machine. Like you say a few issues but overall a great package... Thanks again for a great vid.. 👍👌
I'd never heard of this aircraft until MSFS announced it awhile back. What a strange plane!
Well executed - excellent video and flight.
OH GAWD DARNIT, I promised myself to not get any new aircraft this month!!! Then they go and bring out this amazingly odd and wild machine. That nicely done an most likely very accurate flight deck is likely due to the fact the actual machine still exists. They do need to soften up that landing gear as there appeared no compression at all. The visual model though is really well done. Gonna let some time to go by before getting it, but I will be getting it. I love odd ball aircraft like this.
I guess the odd trastion from vertical to horizal flight being weird is how MSFS handles stall it really seemed like it though you were stalling so it was dipping your wing.
I absolutely love your videos. They are so immersive. Please keep up the awesome content. PS - would love to see some more flying in South Africa some day. 😊
Another interesting presentation.... Thank you for sharing your views on another aircraft... Really appreciated...Roger... Pembrokeshire..
Sir, you are an exceptional aviator, and your experience shows in all your videos. 😄 The shot of your coming into land is so very reminiscent of the Thunderbirds-styled aircraft of the same era... and I think your comments are fair... hopefully IniBuilds will take note. 👍🏼
what a rather odd Aeroplane but not an odd video thank you for doing this.
Very useful review! 👍👍
FLASH!! ... ah ahhhhhh!! ... despatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body.
I believe the space version came with Emperor Ming stuck on the front.
The aircraft probably pitches during the transition from vertical to horizontal flight because of the vectoring nozzles on the main engines. Obviously, it depends on the relationship between center of thrust (CoT) and center of gravity (CG), but generally speaking almost any tilt-jet is going to have this tendecy. Basically, any angle between vertical and horizontal on the thrust vectoring is going to cause some sort of pitching moment because of a misallignment between the CoT and CG vectors that ideally? should be mitigated with thrust differential and PID control if possible. Not sure if the Do 31 has this complete ability. As for the rolling right tendency I have no idea. Anyways cool demonstration video!
Captain Ted is there water running through those engines like a newer VSTOL would have? Or air cooling only?
As usual awesome well documented, well read easy to understand for us low hour pilots you make it seam so easy and it's NOT an easy plane to fly by any means! Again Great video your a blessing and as others have said should have watched this video before attempting to fly such a complexed aircraft. Ty sir id fly with you anytime
SO COOL to have such an uncommon aircraft in the sim!
Mustard made a nice video about this unusual aircraft, best to check it out for some history 101 with the Do31 before watching ini's tutorial or this on how to fly it
There is also one Aircraft Displayed in the "Flugwerft Oberschleißheim part of the German Museum in Munich. If you like to see it live and in Real.
Sail drift must be the kinetic of lift, pushing you down and to the right, not like a stall, like a kite
awww the best chubby vtol, the spike on the nose, so great
Interesting aircraft! Is it possible that you could do a review of the Chinook? It seems to have some interesting features.
how are you is than any word on the duke yet please keep us informed thanks can't wait to get it
never fails, i watch your videos and i spend money lol
Weight and balance for the LOAD position must be a bit of a nightmare.
How do you control your view? Do you use head tracking and disable it when needing to click on something?
It rolls when you pitch in forward flight? Sounds like a lateral weight inbalance, maybe fuel tank locations or something
First in the comments section!! I wanted to check this aircraft out! Thank you for the video💪🏻
It was harder to set the flight controls on the flight stick then it was actually to fly this thing.
why is the left stick canted toward the left (as i would imagine it would so you can fly with your left hand leaving your right to manipulate the center controls) but the thumb pickle button seems shaped for your right hand. a bit confusing there.
I may be wrong but i do not think the vertical engines are modelled in the sim. The nose wheel should not lift. The elevators are responsible for nose wheel lift when the air flow is sufficient.
my guess is that the aircraft has a heavy headwind modelled into it or its treated as a 10kg aircraft meaning the forward speed you see on heavy brakes is sufficient to lift it into the air.
Try takeoff with the B747 with a 160kt headwind.
Any chance they could be using a heavily modified helicopter flight model and the right hand wing drop is due to the left over rotor torque and tail rotor physics?
An odd and oddly beautiful plane.
I have seen the real plane. It looks quite interesting. Would not have guessed that it would get into MSFS
It's like something from Thunderbirds. Or from Marvels Captain America movies.
Imagine thunderbird 2 in the sim.😊
great to have a walrus to fly in the sim!! 😁
Walrus or Norwhal?
@@normanbyrne9868 SHIT! yes a Narwhal 🤣
Greetings
😃
How does it compare to MV-22B Osprey?
This pointy little bastard has TEN ENGINES. No other modern aircraft has needed a dedicated flight engineer more
There is at least another one located at the Deutsches Museum in Munich
Yeah I’ve seen that one too.
@@monacosfranz4202a bisserl was geht halt immer 😉
@@e36s50b30 so schaugts aus 😅
❤ good video as always ❤ thx for that.
But please do not torture me with the bad German Fliegerkameraden song. 😂 I am able to understand the language 😂
Take care
What's making all that noise when you flip the battery master on? It sounds like she immediately starts spooling an engine?
Hi Streaky,
I assume that noise is supposed to emulate the avionics fans (or something to that effect). Quite a nice sound effect although, rather loud, as you say. Aircraft fans can be pretty noisy but, they aren't generally louder than a Rolls Royce Pegasus at full chat (which seemed to be the case here) XD
All the best! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations Yeah, I did wonder if it was the avionics, and maybe gyros spinning up, but seemed too loud for that. After having watched the rest though, I wonder if it's the vertical lift engines we're hearing? You mentioned when you went to start them that the throttle for them was already in start, and they were already spinning? I wonder if that throttle is meant to be out of the start position before you put the batteries on?
You should be playing the "Erika" song while flying this.
There is one in munich
Flying Narwhal.
Surely this is THE holy grail of post-apocalyptic aircraft to use?!!!
If post-apocalyptic earth has oceans made of oil, maybe.
@@mro9466And seas of ground crews
Ugly airplane , I like the song , what is the name of the song 🎵 ? It’s good when I will fly the Messerschmitt ! 😂
The gear seems too stiff when it lands.
X-Plane could have simulated this aircraft much better. The FM for this in MSFS is laughable. If they uncouple the main engine vector thrust from the lift engine thrust, it would be a little better. Its nicely modeled though.
Why are the physics so shit in mfs, just notice how the gear behaves vs how it did irl
honestly don't blame mfs for that, the quality of individual aircraft varies widely, especially with these third party add-ons.
Looks like a cartoon character
What is up with the weird artifacting on the intakes?
Hi IP,
I believe that's caused by DLSS frame generation (which I have recently started using).
I hope that clarifies things. All the best! : )
@@IntotheBlueSimulations It does explain it but with your rig you can just run straight TAA and the whole sim will look better.
Why they spend time and resource on those? There are a MILLION problems already to be solved into the sim... Maybe they´re just wating for the 2024 version to solve some, and than 2026 to sove some others, just as Apple does...
It would be way better and more appropriate if you did done this with helipads.
Lots of Do31 footage here : th-cam.com/video/x3YueCf1JeI/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/x3YueCf1JeI/w-d-xo.html its sound is like something straight from a 1960's science fiction movie
a kind of sub par aircraft, systems modelling is.. barebones and flight dynamics are like an arcade game.. dissapointed honestly
A truly wonderful aircraft that just doesn’t cut it. Inibuilds ego is too unhealthy, and falsely resembles authenticity through their undercooked work.
Hardly a thing from them seems to work on Xbox, which is not a good for a community that is passionate for wanting quality representation of products.
Genuinely I’m not appreciative for them as I once thought.
Reichsfuhrer John Smith has arrived
Inibuilds really did another half job here. Unfortunately. That "Oh is the copilot doing the job coz is complicated" smells like we couldn't be bothered more...
The minute the word Inibuilds is mentioned it’s an absolute NO from me. Terrible developer.
They’re very spotty, almost nothing works on Xbox they make. Why are they praised? They’re a big pothole of a developer.
@@joshuagabsart totally agree. It amazes me why there are a great many people that think they’re great. Maybe on PC but definitely not on Xbox
Looks shite
