:-) "Nature provides you with more if you actually bring less" Fell Wanderer,I am so impressed by your efforts & perseverance & your found wisdom.Loved this post * Thank you so much for taking the time & effort to share
A tomato plant on the front of your tin ...we believe you :) Fantastic video as always Damien and loving how you're always willing to try new stuff out. Doing an overnighter with my belt kit is something im going to do next year once I raise my skill level up slightly. Great heads up on that Maxpedition waistpack too as been looking for something like that. Thanks as always for taking the time to record and share this video bro ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors Thanks Zed, from what I've seen in your video's I think you've got the right mind set and have what it takes to do an overnighter with minimal gear so your doing just fine my friend, there's no harm finding somewhere local and practicing outdoor skills, that's what I do, with new gear you never know how things will perform, its just an exercise so if things get too tough then I can get home safely and quickly, Atb, Damian.
supposed to be camping this weekend, didn't Happen. So,a can of beer and watching your videos, great fun. Keep up the good work, and thank you for keeping all of use entertained.
Another very good video, a mate of mine used to work in search and rescue for the RAF, folks with space blankets had a 90% better survival rating than those without, good to see one in your kit, which is well thought out. The liquid filled compasses are in fact meant to have a bubble as it allows for expansion in hotter conditions without popping the seal, would be more worried by a compass without a bubble, I was beginning to think the creek bank had got it in for you for a minute there, all the best John.
the grey man Thank you for the info, I always thought my compass had a fault with developing a bubble, what you say does make sense when I think abou it. That space blanket made all the difference for me that night, I had camped previously in similar temperatures only a few days ago and it didn't keep as warm so they are a bonus and possibly a life saver
Kudos to u, u practice what u preach and no pomp, refreshing. Nice woods. Glad someone else from the uk talk's about the 5-10 C's, they have saved me a few times. Was a bit worried about the tic bed, but that's "survival". Liked ur tarp (pitch corners at 45 degrees to improve tautness). A few thoughts on kit: Container - closed metal bottle wudv been practical Clean water - cudv used ur condoms (non lubed ones i hope) to bring more water to camp to increas hydration; oven bags are fab (strong, carry alot, fold to nothing); 1L pour n store also good (can get cheaper versions); against medical advice to use purif tab in less than 1L, kills natural stomach bacteria etc not good Combustion - replace lighter with clipper lighter: when gas runs out can still remove flint wheel to get sparks (cheaper version of the spark lite) Calories - add sachet of quaker oats Candlelight - cant beat photon freedom micro (includes clip on to free hands), or E01 Cuts - add few plasters Communication - u need whistle and signal mirror adding to bag and mini tin, or have on lanyard round neck Cutting - mini tini needs wire saw As said - kudos to u. Well done. Fab
Another fantastic video mate unbelievable what you managed to fit in that bag.. The main thing is mate your getti g out and enjoying it which is what it's all about. Hopefully get that meet sorted soon stay safe my friend.
northeastbushcrafter Minimal if fun for just one night but I'd hate to be lost for days in shite weather with hardly any gear, but its still good practice, thanks for watching mate
I enjoyed the video, Nice to see some one actually take somit out of a survival tin and use it. Good thinking, adding space blanket to sleep system, it puts a good few degrees on bag comfort level. Looking fwd to your next posting, thanx for sharing.
Chippa Fate That was the first time I'd ever used a space blacket and was cosy warm all night, I'd used the same bag earlier in the summer and felt cooler so space blankets do work and save lives. Everyones tin will be different depending on conditions and location, a survival blanket is one of the most important item you can add to increase chances of surviving in cold weather and has so many other uses such as tinder, tarp/shelter, rain collection etc.. they weigh nothing and until used take up little space. So long as you tin holds the 5 C's, with a little knowledge you wont go far wrong
Fell Wanderer I normally take a silk liner with me. Do you recommend a space blanket over a silk liner? I will try for myself next time camped up in the New England region of Australia. Last time I woke up there was an inch thick ice in my billy ready for a morning cup of tea!. Love the vid.
Ricketymanfilms Once I realised I was infested, I gave the bag a good shake, got inside and zipped it right up and was ok, apart from the odd tickling and itching sensation on my body which then got squashed in the night when swiped them (they had nowhere to hide lol), funnily enough it didn't bother me, I get more grief from midges and when your zipped right up the bugs if they aren't already in don't bother you too much though the night, Atb, Damian
That M-4 waistpack looks to be a hybrid of the Maxpedition Fatboy sling pack and a GI molle II 1 qt canteen/utility pouch, of which I have both to compare it with. The versatility of having both the molle/pals and wide belt-loop on the back is a nice result of the mix, and you solved the problem of not having shoulder strap d-rings, too. This size pouch does challenge the imagination and creativity on how to make it cover the bases for your needs. Since you've mentioned below adding the Sawyer Mini filter to the kit, the issue of a water container will be addressed by the squeeze/roll bag that comes with the filter. Other than that, all my bags have a cotton bandana/handkerchief as a mainstay multi-use item. Best thing about the video is that you then put your gear to use and we could all assess how it went.
Still one of your best vids Damien. I watch this one when I need the motivation to get off my butt and get out there. Maybe once the beast from the east has passed over. ;)
Fell Wanderer I think being out in the fresh air does make you more hungry and everything does seem nicer in the woods, even when I spillled coffee down my neck, it felt better in the woods as well lol, Atb, Damian
Macker its just the right size to fit in a pocket for EDC and camping, you hardly know its there, the larger ones with more layers look cool but are bulky IMHO, the Hunstman is a good compromise between weight/bulk and tools you would need for everyday use, Thanks for watching
Loving the videos D. Lots to think about and put into practice with maybe a few personal tweaks. Maybe hot chocolate drinks would be a better choice or at least have a couple in the pack for the last drink of the day. Thanks and looking forward to your next trip out. P
Paul Lingard Thanks, the pack could do with a few tweaks depending on where your going, I've just got a sawyer mini water filter and that would definitely be going in for next time and any room left I'd put more food/sweets in, atb, Damian
I use a DPM British Army gas mask holder in the same way as you're using you're Maxpedition and it's a little bit easier on the pocket though still well made (I did get a better shoulder strap for it though). Thanks for another brilliant video!!
+Monica Jones Thanks, noone bothers me as I usually camp in places where there aren't many people around, I try to be stealthy and tidy by keeping a low profile and making little impact on the area. Damian
MaxPedition makes great products , a bit pricy , but good quality , , the thing I have against waist packs is that I wind up wearing them around my ankles every 10th step or so , , lol , , still though , , you have a very good stealthy kit there , , well done :-)
YourWubstep Yes it was my dry attempt at humour lol, I'm a keen gardener and know what tomatoes look like. I'm just not sure whether the plant on the tin is indica or sativa ;-P
Hi watched a number of your videos, I do wilder camping but not like you with a tent and cook with a burner, I have had a lot of pleasure watching videos, and may try out your type or real wild camping,
if you ever want to splash out on a torch the olight s15 baton is cracking. has the advantage you can run it off one or two AA batteries and a v useful moonlight mode when camping.
Excellent videos with some great hints and tips. I'm thinking of making a few myself on Scotland's mountains, what type of camera kit do you use? The quality of your vids are excellent in both audio and visual. Keep up the good work and please keep posting
Gra Fra Thank you for the comment, the camera I have is a Panasonic HC-X900 which has hybrid OIS image stabilisation which offers better wobble free filming than any consumer level camera I've owned. I nearly went for a Gopro and pleased I didn't now as audio and video stablisation is a lot better, although video quality there isn't much in it. I try to be minimal bit would like to take more gear like an SLR camera with multiple lenses but luckily the camcorder takes half decent stills and I have a small compact camera for photography as well. Atb, Damian s
I can't remember exactly what I did now. If Im boiling water I usually wont use a puritab as well. I remember drinking water I didn't boil on that trip as the taste of the chlorine was horrible
Watch that bracken it's known to be a favourite for ticks from deer & thus limes disease. Some say check yourself after just passing through some & keep trousers tucked into socks etc
Some plants are a natural insect repeller so that's one to learn & add as a bed layer if you see it.no way I'm sleeping with spiders on my face. Keep the vids coming your in a good area to access this hobby I'm stuck in the capital it can take an hour just to leave he city
Rookie Outside Thanks for your reply, I did a review on the thermarest prolite in an earlier video, "wild camping and exploring ww2 secret underground bunker" towards the end of the video. Which mat depends on what you want?. if its lightweight then the prolite is good, although its not as comfortable as their heavier but thicker mats such as the toughskin which I own and is much more comfortable than the prolite but a lot heavier for pack packing, more puncture resistant and great for car camping. I think thermarest make great mats but you need to choose a model which best suits your style of camping, Atb, Damian
I survived in these woods for 12 days until the police found me. All I had was my plastic knife and my prison clothes. I didn't even have a tin full of weed like this guy. I had to smoke widgetty grubs.
is there a UK stockist for Maxped? I've just received my first purchase of them, which came from the States and cost a fortunate in fees and post to get here. Cheers in advance
+Alan Mearns I can't remember where I bought the pack but was a dealer in the uk. Did a quick search for uk dealers and came up with thin link www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/UNITED-KINGDOM-d48.htm
Great video. ive watched a few of yours over the last few days. what camera do you use mate?. I'm hoping to do the odd video this year and I'm looking into what camera to use.
I have a panasonic hc-x900, they dont make them now but have newer models which are probably better. Lots of people use gopros and I have one too but I like a camera with a zoom, built in stabilization and decent sound which the panasonic camcorder has, thanks for watching, atb.
Good job . I have ben R & D get home packs for almost 30 yr. I talk at seminars and group meeting . I tell people to keep it to the basics . This is great . Now if i could just do the same . but i keep thinking about the misery level . I tell people not to do this [ my pack ] The Ultimate Getting Home Bag , specialized keep up the good work . Or as my wife would say , good show old boy
crittercreekranch Thanks for your comment, I think with pack size its all about striking the right balance between comfort and necessity, we need the bare essentials but its also human nature to put items in that we could do without. In a survival situation having one or two non essential items which technically we don't need to survive could be a good thing, psychologically this could help in reducing stress, staying focused and increasing moral levels, having the tools and knowledge to survive is one thing but having the mental toughness to get through it is just as important.
The law can be a bit of a grey area and I'm not that clued up, but you can get into trouble just for having a small legal Swiss army knife. I use one as an every day carry so its a bit of a worry for me. If a police officer thinks I am up to no good, it can be confiscated from me and prosecuted. Here is some info on basic knife law, it’s illegal to: sell a knife to anyone under 18, unless it has a folding blade 3 inches long (7.62 cm) or less, carry a knife in public without good reason, unless it has a folding blade with a cutting edge 3 inches long or less carry, buy or sell any type of banned knife, use any knife in a threatening way (even a legal knife). Its best to use common sense, if I was going to a football match or night club, I wouldn't have my Swiss army knife with me but should be ok to carry other times, so long as I don't start pulling it out in a public place. I have larger knives for fishing and bushcraft/camping, so would only carry them while doing those pursuits and transported concealed in a bag. Those knives are legal but like I said, if the police officer thought I was a danger or didn't have a good reason to carry then I could get into trouble. My friend Davey, the Cheviot Yeti got the police called on him while waiting at a bus stop for me to come pick him up to go camping. He had a folding saw which looked a gun barrel sticking out of his backpack and a large knife tied to bag. The policeman made him take the knife home but didn't confiscate it so that was a good thing. Hope this info helps, atb, Damian.
i fell wanderer you made me laugh when you sliped a couple of times have you tryed taking inside of an orange out and filling it with cake mix from a shop and placeing it in wood ash of your fire for 20 mins- not bad - kevin
You talked about the bare minimals, but what you got in you bag is so overdone ( to much little things you might need once )...but i like your accent and bag
l FOXFOR l The video was about the versatility of the bag and on this occasion an emergency bug out bag to last no more that a couple of days. I don't understand what you mean by the bag is so overdone?. a lot of the items were only going to be used once and the contents in the bag were the bare essentials to help keep me alive for a few days until I was rescued or found help, Thanks for watching..
+Skullsweets The video was an exercise of being lost in the woods with minimal gear. Camping in a tent is easy and too enclosed IMHO, camping in a bivy under the stars is where its at, try it if only once in your life and see for yourself, you might feel more connected with nature
Fell Wanderer I'm actually too scared to go outside in a forest and stay in a tent or whatever and animals will eat me so yeah. Your videos make it look easy with how confident you are with great vids.
Depends where you go. If you're in the UK or Europe, you're not going to get killed by a wild animal. In fact, you'll be surprised by how peaceful it is. Last time I went, I just stood out in the dark at night and didn't feel afraid in the slightest. In fact, it was very relaxing. You should try it. Conquer your fears. Although if you live in the US or Canada, there are some obvious things to keep in mind with the different wildlife.
:-) "Nature provides you with more if you actually bring less" Fell Wanderer,I am so impressed by your efforts & perseverance & your found wisdom.Loved this post * Thank you so much for taking the time & effort to share
that M4 pack looks great, can't believe how much you can fit in it. Its amazing how little you really need out in the woods
phrayzar Small on the outside big on the inside, Its like the Tardis for what you can fit inside, its such a versatile pack I love it, Atb, Damian.
Funny little tomato plant haha. Loving your videos mate.

Combustion - replace lighter with clipper lighter: when gas runs out can still remove flint wheel to get sparks (cheaper version of the spark lite)
Calories - add sachet of quaker oats
Candlelight - cant beat photon freedom micro (includes clip on to free hands), or E01
Cuts - add few plasters
Communication - u need whistle and signal mirror adding to bag and mini tin, or have on lanyard round neck

I am hooked on your trips to the woods!

Top video yet again.
Many thanks for this.
Nice one. Got to agree with you about the Swiss Army Huntsman knife, best SAK for wild camping.
Macker its just the right size to fit in a pocket for EDC and camping, you hardly know its there, the larger ones with more layers look cool but are bulky IMHO, the Hunstman is a good compromise between weight/bulk and tools you would need for everyday use, Thanks for watching

A lot stuff in a small pack I'm impressed
Another excellent vid. Cheers for posting. Atb
Mike Peach Thanks, pleased you enjoyed it, mate

I use one as an every day carry so its a bit of a worry for me. If a police officer thinks I am up to no good, it can be confiscated from me and prosecuted. Here is some info on basic knife law,
it’s illegal to:
sell a knife to anyone under 18, unless it has a folding blade 3 inches long (7.62 cm) or less,
carry a knife in public without good reason, unless it has a folding blade with a cutting edge 3 inches long or less
carry, buy or sell any type of banned knife,
use any knife in a threatening way (even a legal knife).

Good idea mate.
Omg take all day to unknot that cordage !!!
Why dont campers use tents
+Skullsweets The video was an exercise of being lost in the woods with minimal gear. Camping in a tent is easy and too enclosed IMHO, camping in a bivy under the stars is where its at, try it if only once in your life and see for yourself, you might feel more connected with nature

I'm actually too scared to go outside in a forest and stay in a tent or whatever and animals will eat me so yeah.
Dude is showing his weed box on you tube .. I think he's eat the wrong shrooms
