Oh, you guys! You feed my soul. Thank you. After a lifetime of living the Gospel, serving, having numerous spiritual experiences, I was given THE BIG ONE. The burning in the bosom, the flood of certainty throughout my body. 2006, age 61, Palmyra, in the log cabin, as the guide described Joseph going to the grove. My mind was filled with the words, “The story is true, just as you’ve heard it since you were five years old”. It was an overpowering physical and spiritual engulfment. Glad I was sitting on a bench, else I might have fallen. I remained sitting, stunned, while the others went up to see the bedroom. I weep as I write. Felt I should share it here. Now, approaching 80, vision not good enough to read much, I draw spiritual nourishment from TH-cam. What a blessing! Your podcast is tops on my list.

I would like to share my humble opinion about the “verbal description “ made by Joseph Smith in different times of his life, from a point of view of a Speech Therapist. 1_ Descrptions depends of the amount and richness of the personal vocabulary who describes. Considering that Joseph Smith was growing intellectually, physically , emotionally and spiritually through all the years after the first vision, Joseph was enriching and enlarging his language skills. 2- after having a vision, an unpaired experience in an unknown realm , it could be almost impossible to process the experience and choosing the right words to tell about. We need to process it. 3_ The human been language ir LINEAL, and in our daily experiences , several things happens at the same time. Hard to describe a simultaneous multiple events with a lineal language. 4- It make sense that Joseph made different accounts, considering that himself gained more knowledge and vocabulary after translating the Book Of Mormón, the Bible , the Pearl of Great Price and putting in words the revelations given by Jesus Christ during all those times. 5- Different audiences. The differences of having different accounts are so understandable. He did a great job!

As you were speaking about the Lord touching Joseph's eye, i thought of how Isaiah's lips were touched. Joseph became a great seer, but Isaiah became a great speaker. Thinking about the Lord's touch in terms of our endowment then, to me means that we must become great "doers".
Such a great podcast, I like that I can liken it to myself. One comment about leaving out the opposition scene during the first vision, that actually helped me to know that it was true because of the opposition I was receiving as I was investigating the church. Interesting how it was effective for me, but probably not for other people.

As far as the different versions, that shouldnt be an issue. I had an experience. I rarely share it and when I do, I dont always include all the details. Does it make me a liar? No. So does that fact that Joseph tells different versions make him a liar? No. Some things like His standing with God are personal and dont need to be shared with everyone. Joseph may have be doing readers digest version. Also, were the different versions from Joseph or from other people relating the story years later and they may have faulty memories? What is important is 1. That God and Jesus are seoerate personsages. 2. The Restoration of the Church. 3. God hears and answers prayers and like a song says. I can pray too!

I dont know of anyone who retells an experience word for word. You might recite something more pertinent to one audience than another, or another. To me, this adds to the authenticity of his experience.

Mike, there is a very, very brief account of the First Vision in the Doctrine and Covenants. Section 20:5. It is the first account given in 1830, even before the 1832 account. It is hard to say whether the Section 20 is Joseph's account, or the Lord's. In any case, the account emphasizes that the Lord tells Joseph that his sins had been forgiven.

I have always had a question. I will ask it in a few different ways because, I guess it is a few questions that are closely tied together. Was there an apostasy and a restoration for each dispensation? Was the gospel restored in each dispensation? Is that the definition of dispensation? Thanks to anyone who can give me a definitive answer.
Very few other dispensations arose in an apostasy, where authority had been lost from earth. Enoch and Noah led dispensations, without a break in the chain of authority from Adam. Melchizedek was around when Abraham was called to lead another dispensations. Moses received his authority from his father-in-law Jethro. Lehi was among the “many prophets” (1 Ne. 1:4) when he became head of the Lehite dispensation. And Peter may have received his keys from Christ, but John the Baptist clearly had authority at the time. The Guide to the Scriptures defines a “dispensation” as: A gospel dispensation is a period of time in which the Lord has at least one authorized servant on the earth who bears the keys of the holy priesthood. Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith, and others have each started a new gospel dispensation. When the Lord organizes a dispensation, the gospel is revealed anew so that the people of that dispensation do not have to depend on past dispensations for knowledge of the plan of salvation.”

The opposition is a certainty. Just as there is light, there is also darkness.
