I have a confession to make: I'm a UK citizen, emigrated to Canada (Permanent Resident status) late Fifties, now living in Toronto, but my immediate family returned to England about forty years ago. They swore they wouldn't go back to London, and resettled in Somerset and Devon. I've spent time back in London a number of times, but not enough to invalidate my PR status. I gather London is a re-awakened cycling city now. Some excellent TH-cam channels on it. I've never visited Scotland, but I'm absolutely smitten with Edinburgh after watching this episode. I'm now going to watch the first one. I had no idea the vegetation would be so lush. And Emilia is lovely too! This is absolutely wonderful!
Thanks John and Emilia for the lovely tour of Edinburgh. It's so cool to see bike advocates from across the pond doing the things that make cycling great. Adding Edinburgh to my travel wish list!
The new segregated bike lanes are fantastic. I love how smooth they are to cycle on. In relation to opposition to cycle lanes; some people will just automatically kick off because they need something to moan about and the word "cyclist" can be triggering for a certain type of person. By and large, initial opposition dies down after the lanes are constructed and people start using them.
Yes, indeed. I am very fortunate and grateful to have been supported by so many amazing people during the 2024 Active Towns European Tour. It is encouraging to see the progress they are making, and they have a very long way to go.
@@ActiveTowns As do many cities around the world John. I've experienced the transformation in the Netherlands in my life, so I know how long it can take, but how worthwhile it is once we get there.
Great audio and steady camera! A bit shocked that England is in poorer economic shape that I thought. This is definitely NOT Switzerland! Thanks for sharing.
Both here and in part one I saw most pedestrians kept to the left, as the cyklist. Over here (Sweden) pedestrians are recommended to keep to the opposite side to the traffic, beit cars or bikes, though that recommendations is not well respected. What are rules/recommendations like in other countries?
Yeah, I noticed that in Sweden. That’s a good question. Let’s see if someone with local knowledge chimes in. Thanks so much watching and for the question. Cheers! John
Think it's just a case of following the same rules as on the road, people will be familiar with driving on the left so no point trying to force pedestrians and cyclists to swap to the other side (especially when you have two way cycle tracks as seen in the video which are "cycle on the left").

Cool! Enjoy Part One. I’ll have Part Three ready later this coming week. Thank you so much for tuning in. Cheers! John
@@ActiveTowns I watched it intently after posting what I did, and now I can't stop reading up on the history of Edinburgh.

You are quite welcome! Glad you could join us for the Premiere!
Great camera work!
Thank you!
It's been a long time ago that I was in Edinburgh. Good to see the improvements being made and you're lucky to again have a wonderful guide.

Pretty hairy around 10:00 minutes, but then it turned into a thing of beauty! Thanks for the ride, John.
