I think different things are more commonly known now compared with then. I've seen other questions in other episodes that most every American would know the answer to today, and other questions that they seemed to get quite easily that I doubt most people would know now (and not just current-event type things). So there's a good chance that the prevalence of the exposure to the word "siblings" is much higher today than in 1959. I just looked at google ngram and, in terms of usage in books according to ngram, "sibling" and "siblings" were almost nonexistent before 1920, grew steadily since the 1920s and have plateaued or dropped since about 2013. They are about 5 times more prevalent today than they were in 1959.
@@mattmexor2882 There have been vastly more dull-witted academic and self-help books published that used those words in recent decades. The question about the resort town was wrongly phrased. Acapulco is on the West Coast of Mexico. It is not south of Mexico City, that would be Cancun. However, I don't believe Cancun, as is known today, existed in 1959, however, I may be wrong.
Funny, Groucho didn't give Sylvie a chance to sing. Not like he usually behaved. Was something written on his card? Also, he didn't ask her about Dunkirk -- she might have had memories of the evacuation.
Because this, and many other episodes posted to this channel, came from reruns aired 20-30 years ago. In the cases where the I have access to an unedited show, I post it.
I would have got SILO wrong. First thing which came to my mind was a hole in the ground for storing nuclear missiles. Maybe they weren’t around when this was recorded.
"Jackson" was trying WAY too hard. Phil Harris always sounded totally natural when he was hep-talking, but this Jackson kid just seems to be trying much, much too hard.
I’ve seen several phony’s on YBYL, and Sylvia was most definitely one. She was about as French as Groucho. My dad’s people were from France and I have also met many French people. When you’re talking naturally you don’t over emphasize and do as she did. She pushed out her lips and really pushed the accent, right down to using cliché phrases such as, “ooh La La.” She was too French to be French. One of my favorite game shows!
I don't think she's "phony" here so much as exaggerating for effect. She's clearly here for attention for her nightclub act (dinner clubs and nightclubs were quite the thing back in the day) and my guess is she's just hamming it up for publicity. Can't blame her for that.
The boy was an Eagle Scout at 12. Very commendable. Today's 12 year old knows only cell phones and video games.
The boy scouts went to crap (so did the girl scouts) so there's not much else for kids to do.

I gotta get my regular dose of this amazing show from a memorable time . . . long ago. There were real PEOPLE then . . like US, even better!
Good to see a man and a woman able to touch each other back then without getting in trouble. It was a sweeter simpler time.

That’s terrible. Just because they could get away with something doesn’t mean it’s ok. Just find someone who wants to be touched.
These kids are still having a blast in their 80s.

LaVonne is alive and well, and still gorgeous. Jackson is running a tour company that does safaris in Africa if I recall correctly.
Great, funny and thoroughly charming episode of this great show
LaVonne is my dad's cousin. Great video!! She is still beautiful too!
She surely is one of the most beautiful women Groucho ever had on his show. And classy too. I am smitten!
She certainly is beautiful here, and I can well believe that she still is. But did she ever become a lawyer?
Pppx
No, but she has a firm in L.A. that handles fine art aquisitions. She is also on the board of MOCA and was a teacher at UCLA I believe.
I’d she’s your dad’s first cousin she’s your second cousin. Great story. She was fun!
