      Bork The Swedish Chef the way the comma was used in that made some separation of the words, so basically it means he said that they did real stuff, no cheating, like other videos that do fake it. You however, are still right if he didn’t use “ , ”. Just some confusing English language

    I've really been enjoying catching up on your old stuff guys. At first the break after the final roundhouse video was sad for me, but since I only subscribed this year it's become a welcome chance to visit classics like these. The growth you have both shown in your bushcraft and your film making is amazing. I can wait as long as you want for more stuff. I'll even rewatch the roundhouse series a 4th time. Keep up the great work!

    It was a great call to actually switch to improving the shelter. Could have easily been stuck on trying to get the fire going until all light was gone. Especially considering you got an ember going once. Easy to push too far with something as important as fire and push past where you can't really make your backup plan work.

  • @aleveraj
    @aleveraj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Little tip, you don't always need to make a board. With smaller pieces, it's good enough if you start a hole with your knife, enlarge it with your drill and then carve the notch directly into the side. No flattening needed. It normally works and it saves time and effort. Great video Julius. Regards.

    • @SmoothGefixt
      @SmoothGefixt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! However, you might want to spend more time making your bow-drill set supreme then wasting energy bowdrilling with a less functioning set. Thanks for the input en your support! Cheers, Julius

    Dude the moment you said it was a Leatherman I paused and took a good look at it because I had my Leatherman C33 in my hand! Today I ordered the ESEE 6 and I already have a Gransfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet. My Gear is mainly aimed at being lightweight. Really great video please keep making them!

    • @SmoothGefixt
      @SmoothGefixt  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leightweight is nice, but you might lose some power too without the weight. Think you made a good choice with the esee 6! easy to sharpen and Lifetime guarantee!! Mind your edge tho, as it is a fairly 'soft' steel and will rust quick.
      Julius does an excellent job looking after his. Coats it in (coconut)Fat every evening at camp and strops frequently:) Thank you for commenting, Dylan

    I can only quote Felix below; WOWWW! You had me laughing in pain, really begging for it to work. I definitely learned a few things. :) good one. you surely found almost no litter, cause that green signs with the eagle represent nature preserves. better not camp nor making fire there, people might react "crazy" if they see this.
    about the bow drilling: we use the bow to its full length while push n pull, finding it less exhausting then. theres also an option to twist the rope around the drill, so it wont fall out easily. have to try this technique myself yet.

  • @JesseAdams
    @JesseAdams 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    very resilient. Exactly why I keep an exotac in my pocket. that's the thing bow drill teaches you is sometimes it just doesn't work and you gas out your arms and just have nothing left. I was so bummed for you when you dropped the ember and were so close. Found you guys from Cedric and Ada and love the videos.

Also, something your video clearly demonstrated is that you would have been SOL if you weren't relatively physically fit. You had to do a lot of work. Many thanks.

  • @MrBloodyBat

    I'm no expert at this by any means, but for your position with the bow drill, I suggest the following:
    1. Get a longer stick to lean on and make sure you put all your weight on it. You can do that by making sure your shoulders are over the spindle, putting your knee on the hearth instead of your foot. Try and make it long enough, so you can use the entire length of your forearm.
    2. If you're more comfortable putting your foot on the hearth, try a longer spindle, that way you can still lean right on it.
    3. Try and use different material for a bird's nest, dry leaves still have more moisture than for example pine needles or dried grass.
    Again, I'm no expert and this isn't "criticism", just a few suggestions. I've picked these up from various other survival channels.
    Great video!

    I think in English they make the difference between tinder (tondel in het Nederlands) and kindling (aanmaakhout in het Nederlands).Batoning with that EDC knife is not a good idea indeed, so what I usually do is carve me some wedges and just make the initial cut with the knife and use the wedge(s) for splitting. Like the video a lot. It shows reality. Not everything you plan works and you will have to adept.

      if you do have to baton with a pocket knife it is advisable to do it with the blade unlocked, this way it puts no pressure on the locking mechanism and you have less chance of destroying the knife. Still, as you say not advisable to baton with any folder.

      Nice, I was confused since their English is really good, they can't really be Germans. but Jäger is a German name, as far as I know. Then I thought they could be some sort of weird British guys. But my final conclusion was Dutch, because of the pronunciation of the "ge" In gefixt. And thank you for the confirmation. (by the way, Dutch is a beautiful language.)

      llaarrssll As an Irish person I can tell you that these guys have definitely spent quite a bit of time here in Ireland, which must be where they have picked up much of their English. Even to my ear, I hear quite a bit of our accent in their voices (to me it sounds about 60% Dutch and 40% Irish) and they constantly use Irish dialect and expressions. They seems like nice lads and the content is always great!!

    With a small pocket knife, make yourself some wedges out of hard, tough wood. Different lengths and thicknesses. Tap your pocket knife enough to score a V in the end of your piece to split, then switch to your wedges to finish the split. A knife is an excellent tool to make other tools with. Very impressive to get as much done as you did with a small blade, and to have toughed out such a challenge in less than ideal conditions! Particularly getting soaked and no fire! I hope it was a warm night my friend.

    that land you are on is just beautiful. It's in Germany you said? I live in southern Louisiana everything is flat and marshy here but we have some nice trials by the river.

      This was in Germany, yes. Most of our videos were recorded in Ireland though. I myself live in the Netherlands, also completely flat.

      Thanks for the very supportive comment, my friend! Really makes us delighted to put energy in making these videos:) Yeah, the firemaking: it was a tense proces to go through. But with gained experience and some faith, success is another step closer for the next time. Fine regards, Julius

      Smooth Gefixt Even though things hadn't gone very well that day, you kept your good sense of humor, that's nice. I'll been waiting for the next video, as I've already watched all the other ones :)
