- Na drie jaar radiostilte is de maestro Stromae terug! Hij lanceerde z'n nieuwe single 'Defilé', om zijn modecollectie 'Capsule N°5' te promoten. Daarbij werd ook een prachtige videoclip gelost, met beelden uit de modeshow van Stromae en z'n vrouw. Studio Brussel had een exclusief interview over wat hij de voorbije drie jaar deed en wat de toekomst nog brengt!
After three years of silence our maestro Stromae is back! He launched a new song 'Défiler', to promote his new collection 'Capsule n°5'. It comes with a videoclip showing the fashion show of Mosaert, the brand created by himself and his wife. Studio Brussel sat down with the Brussels artist to talk about what he did during the past three years and about his plans for the future.

- It was very interesting, but for example with Major Lazer it was very impressive but also hard to work with all those stars. You had Nicki Minaj and PARTYNEXTDOOR, who also sang on the track, and Major Lazor. So many guests, that’s hard.
- So many egos.
- Yes, to say it politely. We had to approach it correctly. Luckily we make clips with the three of us. [Me] with Luc and Martin. Luckily Martin was there to… he is more direct, I am too diplomatic, and a director has to say it like it is.
- What has been the weirdest offer?
- Kanye West wanted me to make a clip, but that’s a long time ago already.

- So, with OrelSan, your friend, he performed at Vorst Nationaal about a month ago. And suddenly, you were on stage as well. How was that for you?
- That was fun. Because when I perform, I get stressed because I don’t want to make mistakes with the lyrics. Yes, that really makes me stressed. So there my only lyric was ‘Il fait beau’, so that was just fun.
- Maybe in the future, it’ll be better to just make songs with just two words.
- That’s a good idea.
- Didn’t you miss performing? The crowd went wild when you came on stage.
- I miss it a little, because it is part of me. When I do 200 performances in two years, I do it because I enjoy it. But yes, I miss it. And I will, for sure, start performing on stage again. I just don’t know when.
- You disappeared from public life for three years.
- Yes, that’s right.
- Because you needed it.
- I was a little… I had some health issues, like what appeared in the press and like I said. I needed some rest, and I needed it anyway after such a tour.
- Yes, because we heard you had a burn-out, or were feeling sick because of those malaria pills. Would you like to explain to us how you felt or how it was for you?
- I don’t want to go into details, because those only concern me. I just wasn’t feeling well. It was between a burn-out and… What set it on were those Lariam pills, a medicine with very bad side effects. And that’s why I had to take care of myself for a while.
- Everyone deserves rest.
- For sure.
- Do you feel better? Is it entirely in the past, or does it still have some consequences in your life now?
- I feel it a little bit sometimes, but that’s part of the experience. And now I know how to cope with such bad situations.
- You got something positive out of it.
- Surely, yes.

- Mosaert is primarily a creative label, involved with videoclips, music, photography and fashion. Our fifth collection is out now. We were inspired by African batik combined with English-European dandyism. You find a lot of different influences in there. We used Japanese prints once, and now we worked art nouveau and art deco again. I think that describes it a little.
- For sure. Do you get inspiration from your travels?
- Not necessarily, but it is funny that it always coincides. I went to Japan with Coralie, and then the Repetto collection with those Japanese influences came out. And now we wanted to come back to where we came from.
- Brussels.
- Yes. And the collection is unisex?
- Yes.
- Is that because you wanted to break the shackles of stereotypes in fashion?
- I’m a little jealous of women’s clothing… because I like a lot of clothing in the smaller sizes, and they aren’t available in the men’s sizes or they’re way uglier. Men’s shoes are always bigger, so immediately uglier and disproportionate. When I see a nice pair of women’s shoes, or a pair of women’s shorts or top, I want to have that for men as well.
- So you don’t need to steal your wife’s clothes and vice versa.
- She usually steals my clothes.
- Really? You work together with your wife every day.

- That’s difficult to say.

- Cambridge Analytica had access to the data of 87 million users. But we have always known that. We knew that those data would be used for bizarre goals one day. It is good that it was discovered, but I thought we already saw it coming. The moment I upload my pictures onto the internet, I know that someone will see them and that they’re not mine anymore. So that reaction is a bit contradictory.
- I have the impression you’re not a social media fan.
- No. I would like to have an Instagram account, but you have to be spontaneous for that and I’m not really good at that.

- No, I don’t think so.
- But you can pretend like it is. You act like it is spontaneous, but it’s not. That’s the trick.
