On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago at the Cadillac Nationals on 6-24-22.
We're looking at a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado in Gold Paint with the Factory 429 CI V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Carl Rossi. Carl’s had this car since 2021. Carl shares he likes the looks of the 1967 Eldorado, and has owned many Cadillacs but this one is a relatively new one for him. He enjoys this car has low mileage, and it drives great.

I am guessing that the engine was either a 429, or maybe a 472ci. And i am wondering, did that vehicle also have traction control? I would hope so, on such a great luxury vehicle! These later 1960s FWD cars, including the Toronado, were very "futuristic" looking and sleek. GM was really on a roll, during the 1960s! World-wide, many people lusted after American vehicles!
I mean. the guy casually mentions that he has a couple dozen low-mileage older vehicles, including around a dozen Caddies! I like this guy's casual personality...Mr. No-Worries himself!...lol.
Cars like this Eldorado, the C2 Vettes, and '65 Riviera's prove that in the 60's GM was at the high point in automotive styling. We will never have another automotive era like that. I absolutely love your videos on all-original luxury cars from this era. This video was a special treat- to find a car like this with rare options in original condition is the perverbial 'needle in a haystack'. BTW Lou, I hope to took your shoes off before you put your feet on those white floor mats!

Those beautiful designs came under the leadership of GM's design chief, Bill Mitchell. Research this "gentleman"; he was one talented, wild and crazy guy 😉
Now they just slap another Caddy badge on a Holden or a Daewoo.

These old Eldos are actually in pretty good supply. You can get them from junkers to museum quality. Not that expensive for the most part. I have the feeling that many were just parked when gas got too high My 70 has 33,000 miles. Bought it rough for $2500. Looked at a couple for $900.

Production of the 1967 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado was only 17,930 units...but sales increased to around 24,000 units for the 1968, 1969, and 1970 model years. The styling was so advanced at the time that its body was difficult to engineer. Two separate stampings are used for the hood...with a long weld down the middle hidden by the chromed wind split moulding. Also, the rear fenders with the very sharp blades were difficult to manufacture due to sheetmetal tearing during stamping. Hidden headlights look cool but are often a warranty nightmare ... thus they were abandoned for 1969. Early Eldorados had bias belted tires that quickly wore out due to high weight and torque from the front-wheel drive (radial tires were introduced later as a huge improvement). The 1970 Eldorado had the monster 400 Horsepower 500 V-8, but the 1967 has the 429 V-8 (340 Horsepower) with the 472 V-8 used in both 1968/1969. A V-12 engine was considered during prototype stage but rejected due to cost and excessive fuel consumption (the long hood and massive engine bay remained). GM purposely introduced the Oldsmobile Toronado the previous model year to work out more bugs in the drivetrain. This example is in Baroque Gold Metallic with the $184 Contoured Bucket Seats and Console in Sandalwood (leather required for an additional $158). Automatic Climate Control A/C was an expensive $515, Front Disc Brakes were $105, and Vinyl Roof was $131 (tragically rots many great cars of that era). Interesting (and rare options) were front seat warmers (carbon heating pads underneath the upholstery) and headrests. Automatic Level Control was standard equipment.

This car also had power rear windows which were a 1-year option before making them standard in 68 . Could not tell if this car also got the optional tilt wheel for 67
@@md11b777 Correct, the Power Rear Vent Windows ($63.15) in 1967 became standard equipment in 1968 (along with Power Front Disc Brakes).
Cadillac was very happy with the sales. It was about the most expensive US car other than the Lincoln MkIII. My dad paid $6600 for our 70 Eldo. If you look at the option list the prices will make you cry. Most options well under $100.00. The sunroof and level ride were the two most expensive options. Union made in the US and very affordable. Contrast with now. Chinese and expensive. Very little plastic in these cars. The drivers ashtray is all steel and has about twenty parts. Must weigh 10 pounds. The power window motors are made of cast iron. Cadillac used those from the 50s to the 80s. I want to adjust the bumpers on mine but I fear I would need a fork lift to move them. These cars used bumper jacks.

Truly one of my all time favorites, I remember when I was a kid, a neighbor had one, his was Aqua/Aqua without vinyl top, and bucket seats. He had several cars over the years, but always held onto that one until his death. His widow still has it in her garage.

Adam at Rare Cars and Automotive History has two in much better shape. He collects land yachts in museum quality condition. I think his 67 has around 15,000 miles.

I had the 70 Eldo in gold . That car was a fast machine and drove like a dream. We named it The Golden Warrior! I loved the rear windows that slid into the body .

It was my street rod in high school. Never had a problem with 396 Chevelles or 383 Road Runners. Smoke the front tires.
what a beautiful example of a 67 Cadillac and as I've said several times previously my late maternal grandfather had a 1968 Eldorado Seville in black with red trim Cadillac used that horn until the mid 1980s I remember from being a young child my late maternal grandmothers used 1981 Coupe Deville had that horn and a 427 CID V8 engine + a 4 speed TH200 4 R automatic transmission

No 427 engine in 1981 Cadillacs! You must be confusing it with the TERRIBLE 4-6-8 Cylinder deactivation system!
Two horns were standard. three was optional.

And what a CLEAN example!
The only thing that's weird, is despite how incredibly clean and patina-free that particular car is, the vacuum plated chrome rims of the gauges in the dash look pitted.
I've seen cars that were abandoned outside 40 years ago... Not a stitch of interior left in them, totally rusted out... But the dash panels look brand new.
It's weird how that works out sometimes.

Some years the engine hood was one piece, some it was two piece welded at the center line. Some have wierd cutouts at the back of the hood which makes aligning body lines difficutl/impossible. The front fender inserts never fit well and were changed to turn lights in 68. And the troublesome hidden headlights were dumped. The 67 is a one off front end.
I was in a supermarket in the 80's and saw on index card that said "Cadillac for sale called Dorothy" always liking Cadillacs I called I went over to her house and in the garage under an inch of dust was a 67 El Dorado just like this model triple black. It was a husband who had passed away I asked how much you wanted she said $250! I explained to her as much as I would like to take the car for $250 it was worth much more than that she refused to take the money so I arranged that I would always come by her house and mow her lawn and shovel the snow which I did still she passed away. Had that car for 20 years til was stolen 😡. Thanks Carl for sharing with Lou and his community

The 67 Eldorado was the most beautiful Cadillac of all time. Imo it looked better without a vinyl top. It was one of three Bill Mitchell masterpieces. The other two were the 63 Riviera & the 63 Corvette split window coupe

A 1967 Cadillac had a 429 cubic inch, 340 horsepower engine. In 1968 they went to a 472 cubic inch 375 horsepower engine. I totally agree that this was the time that GM got it right.

In my opinion it was the most beautiful Caddy design of all time. As a kid I remember seeing an article in Popular Science and the title was something like "If I was a Millionaire I would buy a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado."

Beautiful car. The bucket-seat option is really special. I also have a soft spot for old Cadillacs because my father worked for them in the 1970's. The whole feel of the dealership was classy, and the cars looked so nice lined out in front. I got a ride in one of these at that time and the smoothness is unreal. Like the car is sliding on grease. The 2-door "personal luxury car" was always my favorite type of car. It's gone forever.

The dealer in KC dated from 1919 and really layered on the customer service. They are gone now.

The 1967 Cadillac Eldorado had a 429 cid V8. The engine was enlarged to 472 cid for 1968.

472/500 was clean sheet design. 429 was a bored 390 from the 50s. The 429 guys tell me they get 18 mpg on the freeway.

I watched a review of another 1967 Eldorado on another channel. The “crease” in the center of the rear window was apparently created at the factory with a “hot wire.” The horizontal “canister” just in front of the brake master cylinder was connected to the rear shocks. It was a “load-levelling feature.” Cadillacs in the late fifties used to have an “air ride suspension system” as an option. When you would leave in the morning, you would find your car sitting on the ground! Only when it was started would the “bellows” at each corner of the car inflate, and lift it to a normal riding height. A problematic feature which Cadillac would soon abandon!

Personal luxury cars were popular 50 yrs ago. ElDorado,Tornado, Riviera, Grand Prix all had nice offerings. There's a retired Air Force Capt on you tube that buys & sells all years of these & just the lowest mileage cars that are almost better than new. Wish I could think of his name.

Wow, this is a really nice Cadillac, but 1967, not 1966. It is powered by a 429 cu inch V8 good for 340 HP. The cost in 1967 was 6277.00$ it was a bit pricey but scored a healthy 17930 units sold. Great video , love those Caddy

Vinyl was extremely trendy back in that era!...It was just something rather "new and different" for the times. I agree with you, most of those vinyl tops looked sort of tacky!

you can never wear jeans when riding in this car! gorgeous brown and white interior. this gen eldo, plus the toro and riv, are cars that were custom right from the factory...nothing can be improved on these.

Saw one with a custom Italian leather interior, buckets and sunroof. Sold for $50,000. Sweet.
GM was "in the zone" during most of the 1960s...but Ford and Chrysler were in close pursuit!...So many unusual, dynamic designs showed up, and I was a young man then, and appreciating the choices available!

I never realized that the Cadillac Eldorado was front wheel drive starting in 1967. I thought that it was much later. First was the Oldsmobile Toronado in 1966, and in 1967, Cadillac introduces their Eldorado with the front wheel drive configuration. Eventually Buick released the Riviera in front wheel drive as well. The engine sounded healthy, and the interior was immaculate! I like the way the body style and rear deck is laid out. Beautiful color as well. I'm curious to know what size engine that Cadillac has sitting under its hood. The vacuum container has a slight leak in it which is why the hideaway headlights didn't close evenly. My neighbor's 1966 Toronado had the same issue with his hideaway headlights. That Eldorado is one slick Cadillac indeed!

The trans was the Olds design. Turbo hydramatic 425. It was built from turbo 400 parts. Cad let Olds get the bugs out before they took it. The original had some sort of complex two speed torque converter which I think functioned as a locker. GM dropped it after one year. Olds tested the trans by going full power from neutral to drive to neutral to reverse hundreds of times. They burnt out many tires sets doing so. GM put the trans in the 13000 GVW motor home and Recon used it too. You only see breakdowns in the motor homes never the cars. If it needs servicing you need to find a motorhome shop. It is well obsolete now.
Someone already verified my earlier guess...it is a 429ci engine, 340 hp...interesting, that Cadillac did not push for even more power...my dad's 67 Buick wildcat had a 430 ci engine, 360 hp. This was back when each GM division actually made their own engines! Pontiac was sort of considered to be the "hottest" line of GM...with the GTO being the iconic muscle car during that era...but eventually, Buick and Chevie offered their own "hot" setups...of course, by the early 1970s, the HP contests fell by the wayside!
Aye another great car , you want to learn more about this car and the designer check out Rare classic cars on TH-cam, he has a 1969 version of this car. You should have shown how the rear windows opens, it's unique. I have to say that this 67 is far nicer than the 69 one I seen ,I think the gold paint and white interior suits the car, great video.

I think Road and Track said it handled pretty well. The suspension is stiff. It does'nt have the Cadillac ride. Rear leaf springs, front torsion bars.
It is a "sporty" looking vehicle, considering it's size...but really, forget about real sporty handling!..That is not what these beautiful cars are about!

@@rogersmith7396 a lot of these large cars sacrificed their lives for the Hyundais, Hondas, Fords, and Chevies that clutter up street corners nowadays.
Stylewise, '67 was not a great year for Cadillac, with the exception of this gorgeous model (although in '69, they didn't use the much nicer hideaway headlights).

It's called a 'Split' rear window, not a crack. And on the trunk, it is a 'Cadillac badge', not "this over here".

Great video Lou - thanks for posting. I've got a small question which some Cadillac experts may be able to help me with. The Door Plate says, "Body by Fleetwood" but the VIN Plate says, "Body by Fisher". I know that the latter was standard in GM motors, but this seems to be a contradictory. Does anyone have any ideas?

Adam at Rare Cars states Fleetwood merged into Fisher and by this time the Fleetwood name did'nt mean anything. Cadillac did make a model called Fleetwood.

Interesting Cadillac fact. Take one 500 c.i engine and put 472 c.i. heads on. Instant 12.5 to 1 compression. This Eldirado has the 429 c.i engine

Not that simple. The 70 Eldo 500 was already over 10:1 compression. If you put 472 heads on it you get like 14 or 15 to one. You have to use a low compression 500 from 71 or later. Plus there were casting changes. The Cadillac Company has the details. Richard in SF did one too. Plus the cast rods are barely adequate. Those have to be replaced with any upgrade. The stock intake is very poor to clear the hood. It should be junked. You can't put headers on the engine in an Eldorado. The frame rails are in the way. None of the heads flow very well. I would like to turbo mine to say 500 HP, a mild build. Probably won't happen. Apparently FI does'nt help much. Later 500s had mechanical FI. Mine has been retrofitted with the Cadillac electronic ignition.
Probably the single best thing you could do would be to get a modern 5 or 6 speed trans. Leno converted a Toranado to RWD with over 1000 HP. It must haul ass.

A gorgeous car. I always liked the 1st gen Eldorado and Toronado. After 1970 they got hideously ugly and big.

Yep. 1st gen was in the 50s. Second gen was a rebadged calais or something early 60s. I think these are 3rd gen and the barge mobiles are 4th gen. I believe this was Cadillacs muscle car. Its quarter mile times are comparable to other muscle cars. The next gen was an old ladys parade float. Detest them. Put cow horns on the front.
I have a 70 Eldo and grew up driving one when new. I judge it to be superior to the 67. Old 429 engine vs. new 500, 4 wheel drum brakes vs. discs, Lots of gimmicky gizmos on the 67, unattractive interior. As shown the hidden headlights were a problem and I don't think look good. Better wheel covers on the 70. The 67 may have the two speed torque converter on the Olds transmission which some say is better. Discontinued for 68. A guy was trying to tell me there are no bucket seats on Cadillac. They are very rare. Kind of wierd having a car this big with only two front seats. If he had the sun roof it would be like one of a thousand and very expensive. It has the level ride. Unpleasant color combinations, white top shoe brown interior, yuk. Mine is gold but a one year one model paint.

425 was a later downsized version of the 500. They eventually got it down to 368 I believe. The worlds largest small block. Then I think they used Olds engines.
