On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 9-13-22.
We're looking at a 1970 Ford XL Sportscoupe with Dual Tone Paint. The car comes with the factory optional 429 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is John McCarthy. John’s had this car since 2021. He shares he had a car like this car in High School and sold it. He realized he wanted to find one again so he can relive his youth and spent years trying to find one. Finally last year found this one on eBay. This one is a survivor with just over 39,000 original miles on it.
    ENJOY!

I remember seeing a brand new sports roof Galaxie at our local Ford dealer in 1970 (we always went to all dealers when the new models came out, there were always giveaways, free stuff, drinks. food....and the cars!) when I was around 7th grade..it was a baby blue with a darker blue interior and a white top (can't remember if it was painted or vinyl. It caught my eye because it was the only roof line like it on the lot. Big car. This XL is nice and certainly got in the right hands. Surprised it survived the crusher days, so many of our wonderful cars went that way. Glad you found this one to show everyone, Lou!

Oh my goodness, you brought back memories of my Uncle Charlie Hogan and his 70XL. He would visit and take me for a ride to town. The only difference is that his car had the 429-4V. He would punch it on the way home and the G-force from the acceleration would push me hard into the seat. My Uncle Charlie would laugh so hard at my reaction. Thanks again Lou for the memories and the video 👍

This nice looking 1970 Ford XL was one of number of full size American cars of that time era. That was the time of large full size cars with a large V8 engine, rear wheel drive, and body on a frame construction. These cars were very roomy and had a quiet comfortable ride. They were real great for long road trips. That era is now long gone.

That XL brought back memories of the 1970 Galaxie 500 two door hardtop sportsroof that my aunt purchased brand new after her 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air was stolen. It was a far plainer car -- 302 V8, automatic, power steering, whitewall tires, full wheel covers, and vinyl interior being its only options. Stopping that huge car with manual drum brakes was a real challenge. She traded it in when it had 8,000 miles in 1978 on a much smaller and more nimble Plymouth Horizon that was much more highly optioned.

Hi, Lou! Ford brought out the first Galaxie 500 XL in 1962. It became simply the XL in 1967, and the 1970 was the last of the line. The SportsRoof coupes of 1969 and 1970 were particularly rakish with the sloping roofline, tunneled rear window, hidden headlights and cockpit-style dash, and looked even more so with the Dual-tone paint job. John was very fortunate--and very patient--to find one in such great shape and with such low mileage in that stunning combination of black, gold and ginger.

You don't come across these much anymore, specially in such nice condition. Back in 1972, I knew of a guy whom aquired the most unusual big Ford car (from approx. the late 1960's) that I've ever seen. I don't remember if it was a 1968 or 1969, but it was medium blue exterior, 2-door post Galaxie with a regular roof (not a fastback)...looked like a big 2-dr coupe (actually looked sorta of odd). I do remember that it had a big block engine (428 or 429) with a 4bbl. carb, dual exhaust, but the most unusual item is it was a factory 4-speed. I believe it may have also been a bench seat but not sure (could have been bucket seats). This car was a former Connecticut State Police Car, had a special speedometer and some other gauges. I don't recall it being "quick" in the short distance but do remember it more of a "top end" car for the highways.

A boulder came off a rock cliff and hit my parents while they were driving it damaging the passenger's fender and cutting the right-side front tire. I remember the day I first saw a full-size 1970 Ford. It was a light blue one (a four-door I believe, like the one at 12:01) that I saw while delivering papers as a kid, in the fall of 1969. When I saw those rectangular taillights, I instantly recognized it as a 1970 as I had not seen those before.

FABULOUS and slightly (very) rare . Cannot remember the last time one has been seen here (VA). Reminds one of Mercury's X-100 Marauder. The best I ever did was a 70 Mark III - it did have a 460 however. Cheers!

Great car. My Father was a Ford mechanic in the Detroit area in the mid 60s to mid 70s. He would bring cars like this home all the time. They rode so smooth and were so quiet inside with the windows up. Way better than today's cars.

    Very nice !
It was said that this paint job was rare. To me, the car was rare, too.
I was 13 in '70 and don't remember these at all. Yes, i remember a white '66 Galaxie next door, my all time fave of that so,,,, ;) I never saw one.
Sorta unusual that a 429 was offered with a 2V and single exhaust but i'm sure it could get out it's own way ;)
    She's a beauty !

Hello again, Lou! This is another rare beauty you don't see much of today. This car and the Marauder X-100 (the XL's sister car at "The Sign Of The Cat") shared the same basic body. These were among the last of the full-size high-performance cars (along with the Chrysler 300, Plymouth Sport Fury, and Buick's Wildcat), and sales were lost to such cars like the Torino GT/Cyclone, and, of course, the Mustang/Cougar.
A change of note: The radio antenna was moved back to the right front fender, after spending 1969 on the left side. The radio was mounted to the extreme left on the instrument panel. So therefore, any passenger in a '69 full size Ford had to ask the driver to change the station. Score one for the driver!
Finally, the two-tone paint treatment is rare, I haven't seen many 1970 Ford XL's with it! I have a copy of the May 2008 issue of _Hemmings Classic Car_ with an article on a two-tone yellow and black 1970 XL convertible.
Every time I see a Ford like this, the television show "The FBI" (1965-74) comes to mind. You may remember that Ford sponsored the show, and Ford cars and trucks were seen in every episode.
Thanks again, Lou! I'll be looking for more! _(11/9/2022)_

Ahhh yes, the 1970 Galaxie 500/LTD XL coupe - my FAVORITE car of all time! I owned two 1970 Galaxies, a 2 door coupe with the 351 Windsor and a four door with the 429 2 barrel carb. My neighbor had a blue 1970 XL with the highback buckets and a console with every option available, but it had been in a wreck so the front 1/4 panel was a mess and the car was just sitting in their back yard. I tried like hell to buy the car from them but they refused to sell it. They ended up taking it to the junkyard (!!!) without telling me about it and it disappeared after that. Someday I WILL find another one and fully restore it, but it must have the buckets and console interior with all of the interior power options. I'd also love to get my hands on a convertible version with the same interior options, but those two are extremely rare and almost impossible to locate. Your car is just stunning and a beautiful example of this model year and the two-tone paint certainly makes it a unique version of this model. I remember how much torque this particular engine had, and I shredded the rear tires on my 429 taking off from a dead stop, even chirping the tires when it would shift from 1st to 2nd gear at around 60 MPH - it was thrilling!
Thank you for showing us this beauty, it brings back nothing but happy memories for me of the one car that I still lust after to this day.

Man, them Hide-aways worked PERFECTLY! Must be a single vacuum motor/servo for both covers, because my old '68 Cougar had separate servos for both covers, and they never opened or closed together like that. In addition, there is a a little round 'flip-flop' valve which reverses the vacuum connections to the servo(s). With the engine off and headlights off, you would turn this valve, and the covers would open. Turn it back, and they might close if you have enough vacuum, maybe... The valve was down near the steering box, probably below the vacuum reservoir I see there. When I was little, my Dad had a '70 LTD four door hardtop - white, black vinyl top, blue vinyl interior, 390 C6 - and he would open the doors for me from under the hood when he had the hood open. My Mom put an indentation in the drywall in our garage with that center of the bumper. Those fastback C pillar buttresses look like a '71-'73 Cougar or Mustang notch! That car is the end of the fullsize fastback muscle! I have a set of those XL wheelcovers for my '77 F150! Looks like the 351 was standard in the XL, with 302 only in the Custom and Custom 500. My truck has a 240 which someone slipped in in place of the 300. You can see a super-rare buckets/console/floorshift car pictured in the brochure!

Just got a 1969 ford XL convertible at a local auction. Only had one owner and i found in the trunk the entire history of the car from the window sticker, dealer order, purchase reciept to road maps of where he moved to in 1970 in Los Angeles and an entire service history of the car all hand written from november 1969 to 1994 and service receipts after 1998 when he moved to VA included a copy of the registration receipt.
The best part was a typed letter the man wrote to his dad in indiana telling him exactly what car to look for at the dealers and how much he needs to talk down the price. Reason for this was that the cars in Indiana were cheaper than in California, where he lived.
Car still runs great, just needs a little body work, new coat of white paint and a top.

Rare, beautiful, and like new. I love that car. I grew up in the 1960s - 1970s in a Ford family, and I have owned an early 1970s Ford. These cars disappeared for many reasons, one not often mentioned is that drag racers cut them up for the 9" rear differentials. I recall plenty of BB Chevy cars driving through 9"ers. Good to see this one survived.

Bunkie Knudsen was Ford's CEO in the late 1960s. He was previously General Manager at the Pontiac Division and then later at Chevrolet Division. Once hired by FoMoCo, he insisted Ford use the pointed nose design on some of its passenger cars. The 1970 and 1971 Thunderbirds were his most extreme example. Lee Iacocca and some other Ford executives detested Knudsen and convinced Henry Ford II to fire him.

@@dave1956 FoMoCo is and was probably the most difficult (at least regarding the domestic automakers) to work as a senior executive. Some of that difficulty comes from the Ford Family having outsized influence. Joe Hinrichs was a former senior executive at Ford who was thrown under the bus and fired a few years ago (Former Ford CEO Mark Fields supposedly tried to make Hinrichs the fall guy before he himself was shown the exit door). Both Hinrichs and Fields were LONG time Ford employees.
Knudsen thought that part of Pontiac's sales success in the 1960s was due to a front bumper "beak"...but the story is that the senior design team at Ford at that time (and also Iacocca) disagreed that Ford should imitate that design.

Beautiful Car!! When I was 19, I bought a 1968 Galaxy XL with the 428 4bbl. It was Gold with the gold colored interior. It had the huge bucket seats with the full console and the tach was mounted at the front of the console. The Shifter had a full loop and and you squeezed the bottom of the loop to shift out of park .God that thing was fast!!!! Not 1/4 mile fast but you get it out on the interstate and I bent the return spring on the speedometer! I am sure I was hitting somewhere around 150!

Great to see this example of the big XL in its final year. And if memory serves an excellent article on these states that in '70 the base engine option on this model was Ford's 240 inline six!

Nice car Lou. Thanks to you and Mr. McCarthy. My Grandparents had a very similar 69 LTD with a 390 so, memory lane and all that!

LOU- I checked the Old Car Manual Project website, and the 1970 Ford XL brochure states the standard engine was the 351 V-8 with a 3 speed manual tranny, optional was the 390 and 429 V-8 and Automatic.
