This hits close to home for me. I know of a company that lost over 100k GBP to a phishing scam like this. They've been monitoring the company's ingoings and outgoings for months...and struck at the right time.
Security may be everyone's responsibility but unless companies treat their employees well, and give them incentive to protect and defend their interests, it is unlikely those employees will take security seriously.
negative! continue mission.... you think Jesus took a single day off? hell no! he's dead now but the point is this.... I'm much to defective to weigh your selfish wants and needs! there are people out here counting on you to make these videos especially if you about to die. I mean you would think they would be more efficient me
I really enjoyed this episode, the short length makes it easy to listen to it when you have very little time. But, Jack, please take care of yourself. Health always comes first
I really appreciate your channel and vids. This particular scam (in hindsight) probably did far more harm to the individual group themselves than they did to FB or the other Giants. Anytime theres a paper trail that can be followed, you'll be caught. A person can create a hundred different levels of security for their scam, but when you have a federal agency/team dedicated to finding you, they will and they will always win....
His name is Mr Evaldas Rimasauskas. Very smart and I hope he kept millions! In fact they should've rewarded him at the end for pointing out that issue 🤘
How could someone so smart do something do dumb? And look guys. If you're getting millions illegally, make damn sure you aswitched citizenship and live in a non extradition country.
Companies don't write $1,000,000,000,000 checks. They use bank transfers for big amounts like that. They don't keep A Billion Dollars in one account! That's not how big money works.
The way out would have been to email back and change the details to the real account so only some payments would be missing. The likelyhood of the missing account details being retained would have lessened and thus the chances of being back traced and thus could have been carried out every few months as "a security measure" by the recipient.
Why not just use a spoof email to begin with? The amount of intelligence these hackers have to be caught by a simple error that the dumbest person could see just astounds me. It's like they want to get caught
When I've heard that the guy who had done this is from Vilnius, I got a little bit shocked, because I am from Lithuania too. And as for this small country, you don't hear anything about your country very often.
Brilliant found youre channel through doingfedtime,I am hoping you interveiw him . That would be a brilliant episode ,cheers for the content bro I’m sharing you all over ,peace n goodluck , You’re gonna blow up dude I’m very sure off that. 😊
This was a really nice episode, though I had to stop a few minutes in as I recognised the backing track and had to figure it out. It's Threads by Ebb & Flod. It's on one of my spotify playlists.
plot twist: somebody knows this stuff and hire guys like the Lithuanian to off shore their money, because a claimed loss is even better than profit! tax free, corporate hardship! lol
Listening to this while I'm working my purchase ledger (paying invoices) job, and I'm shook at how stupid Google and Facebook are, this wouldn't work on the local utility company I work for, they absolutely wouldn't pass an audit by the sounds of it.
Liked and subscribed! Really interesting, thankyou for sharing. I saw that scammers can use other alphbits that have characters that can look like ours but because it is a different lingo it can evade some systems checks as well as human eyes.
There was ongoing idiocy here, but it wasn't just that. This guy might have also performed a horrible extortion scam too by threatening to place late fees on Facebook & Google's accounts with him if they didn't pay by a certain time, and it just ended in payment whenever money was due, making it easier to accept.
Not really. Tech companies, such as these at peak points in their life cycle, are so enormous they're drowning in revenue and as soon as that payable hits the accounting dept. the payment in response is fired off. So any hard-balling from the scammer would've raised eyebrows and that's the last thing he wants happening. His set-it-and-forget-it strategy was as good as that play could have went. I'm surprised it took 2.5yrs for any red flags to pop up. Ya, but using his personal email to register a domain is... birdbrained. Wuh wuh wuuuuh 8[
They recovered a bulk of the money. So it's not like he's getting out and having any money left. It's all gone after he pays that and he'll be in debt. So all the fun was only for less than a year.
That wasn't waiting five years to get rich, that was waiting 5 years to stop losing lots of money. I have the patience, I just don't have the money to lose first.. Not to mention all the best businesses are gambles to begin with. Nine times outta 10 you loose to begin with, I got one success + two failures under my belt, if it was the other way around I wouldn't be living because of Medicaid & have no cash.. And if I get any older I will not be able to afford my patience
Greed will get you every time... i invented my own GRS a decade ago .... Ran the system for a few years then QUIT -- I still run it occasionally when life gets tough My point is don't get greedy and don't talk about it in the internet 🤣🤣
A lot of employees will have purchasing power for buying products and items and servers and whatnot, but not a normal employee would have access to sign a lease on an office building or renovations or a company car, that is a whole different department that deals with stuff like that usually called corporate real estate or something along those lines. And it's like me for my company I work for a Fortune 500 financial firm and I have a company credit card and really sodas most of the employees there at least I know on the tech side on the business side I don't know what their policies are and stuff. But whenever we order things we do it through our internal PO systems and budget invoicing is tracked with a magnifying glass looking at every single item so sneaking through faking voices and stuff like this it likely would not work where I work at, because there is so many people involved with every part of uninvoice, PO, PR, vendor engagement
And anyone with a power to ride a large check for the purchase of a company is actually done through legal with contracts, a metric crap ton of contracts, and an escrow, and usually the board of directors any associated departments involved in the activities of this new company such as technology, business, vendor management, legal, HR, etc, the list goes on forever. I know this because I've been involved in many M&A at my company and there is a lot to do on legal day one. Legal day one is the first day of our ownership of the company and that's where we step in take over start turning things off and telling people what to do and company and all assets and everything involved ours
The funniest part of it all is that Facebook was buying people not software. At any second people can use my website instead of instascam. Within seconds my website could become a multi billion dollar URL!
You sounded fine, get well soon If only there was a way to ledger all the international transfers big and small, and have them not be forged. If only the oracle was real🤔🤭

They'll most likely just cya
The companies themselves don't care about security. It always takes a sideseat to profits.
The more important thing for us is your health jack, take care of yourself.
