I know that it is unrelated to the subject of the video, but when he mentioned the krypt, I remembered a not so funny event that happened to me. When MKX was first released, I was beyond excited for it. Then one of the patrons at GameStop told me that the krypt would have giant spiders in it and my heart sank a bit. I have severe arachnophobia and now a major portion of the game was cut off from me. After I bought the game, I realized that I could buy everything in the krypt without going into it. So I did just that, not because I was lazy, but because I didn't want to risk having a panic attack going through those caves. I thought that I had dodged a bullet. Then Injustice 2 came into the picture with its Halloween event fight with Scarecrow and one of those random items managed to hit me during the battle. I realized then that I never dodged that bullet. It just waited to hit me when my guard was down a few years later.

If it wasn’t for the ending of the story mode, I would find the game perfect. I did not like the ending, but everything else was wonderful. Honestly, it is probably the best made story mode even with the ending. I like how dark it is, the characters, the length, the difficulty, and everything else. The only thing I would compare it to is aftermath. That is only because you get to choose the ending and be evil. I found that very interesting, and it made the story mode very unique.

I will say this, a lot of fighting games will always have that one character or that one move that annoys everyone no matter who it is. Players who constantly spam the same move or even the same easy combo that deals a lot of damage will affect your view on the character, your enjoyment of the game, and your overall experience at worst. I still remember seeing a headline on MK9 where people spamming Sektor’s teleport punch and Raiden’s electric fly ruining online, for MK X it was full auto Jackie with her machine gun, and MK 11 it’s a combination of Cetrion, Robocop, Sub Zero, Jade, and Sheeva at one point. That kind of problem will always be a number one reason why I don’t think any fighting game, or MK game, will get a 10/10 but MK X definitely deserves a 9 for the amount of content and ambition it has. Personally I think MK9 gets a 9.5 just because it was a breath of fresh air after the 3D era provided some games that were either hit or miss, the MK vs DC debacle, and because it laid the groundwork for a ton of things we can expect for future games. Things like DLC character, the X-Ray specials, the meter system, and a story that feels satisfying to replay on a higher difficulty, which makes the story for MK X shine while 11 felt more like a step back in its ending. The only real criticisms I can give to MK X is the character costumes blending in too much with the background, they have nice designs but it can be difficult to see what a character is wearing in a darkened stage like Quan Chi’s room, the winter forest, Lin Kuei temple, Sky Temple, and so on. In summary, MK 9 gets a 9.5 for being a great example on how to reboot a series while it retains its history and pushes the story further, MK X deserves a 9 for being ambitious and treading new ground but with some criticism towards the character outfits and saturated colors being too much at times, and just for kicks MK 11 getting an 8.8 for being a step back for newcomers while the story feels a bit rushed at times.

It's an 7 out of 10 for me. Bear with me here.
I'm a guy who grew up in the arcade era of MK. Deception imo was the most FUN MK game ever released. People like to shit on it but they don't know the joy of playing the in game RPG, playing Tetris and Chess modes, and how fun doing stage fatalities and environment interactions in that game was. It was a ton of fun.
Armegeddon took a giant shit on what was set up with Deception, and thus MK goes back to 2D form with the release of MK 9. MK 9 was FUN also though. It didn't have the depth of Deception, or all the side games but the gameplay going back to original form was still good. Good enough that a competitive scene started to flourish. That competitive scene is exactly why I am giving MKX a 7 out of 10.
See fighting games are still video games. They need to have a large appeal to both casual and competitive players. MK was always a game that was built for casual players, a fun game for people to enjoy with fun animations and even side games.
MKX gets released. It is almost immediately apparent that this game was built specifically for the competitive community. The game play is the fastest paced it has ever been. It becomes quickly apparent as well that you will not be able to be very effective in this game without knowing crazy 10-15 hit combo strings. It was a pain in the ass. But I buckled down, learned some combos. Hey, I love MK. Then you start playing online matches, and what do you get? Constantly getting bodied and insulted by toxic 16 year olds with no jobs or lives. Took the fun completely out of the experience. Not to mention the color pallet was honestly way too dark and bland in MKX. MK has always been a colorful game and this game just looked kind of bleh.
NRS releases MK11. Which btw, graphically, is the most beautiful MK game ever released. They went back to form building a game that could appeal to both casual players as well as the competitive community. With absolutely insane animations, and a unique system that could be enjoyed by casual players but also played competitively. And what did the comp. community do? Constantly talk shit on the game, it's "too slow", blah blah blah. I have news for you guys who are competitive players, STOP SHITTING ON THE CASUAL COMMUNITY BECAUSE IF THEY DON'T BUY THESE GAMES, THE STUDIOS CAN'T AFFORD TO MAKE THEM ANYMORE. It's literally you shooting yourselves in the foot. That's part of the reason I think MK has taken so long to release a new game.
MKX is a good game, I agree. But it's not a 9. It's a 9 for competitive players. Sure. Or 9.5 or whatever. For most of us regular gamers it was way too frustrating to actually enjoy. And aside from the gameplay issues there, (and that IS an issue for a lot of casual gamers), there was also the fact that it really didn't look that good. The colors were gross. So I think giving it an 7 is generous. At least MK9 LOOKED great. It was colorful, and the fatalities in 9 imo were a lot more fun than most of the ones in MKX. I would give MK9 an 8.5 or 9. MK11 is definitely a 9 even 9.5. MKX was a solid 7. Sure, was a decent game, but still my least favorite of the 3 games.

  • @KuulSHep

The problem with X's story mode is that it totally rewrites/erases 25 years of the game's history. I used to be a die-hard MK Fan, even when everybody else forgot about it but the minute MK9 comes around everyone is a fan now!
I was super excited for MK's comeback in 2011 and loved it (hated the ending though). But X--how we go backwards in time just to move forward in time in the next installment??? It broke the continuity just like everything else which is currently a trend along with MESSING WITH TIMELINES! And I don't wanna hear about Raiden jacking up said timeline cause that is some buuullshiiit...!
The Kombat Kids are godawful (design-wise and their involvement in the story), the other new characters were just whatever, and the graphics are so uncanny it made characters like D'Vorah look terrible. Then their fatalities, jeebus, not creative at all. The fricken X-rays looked better because they WERE fatalities.
I also don't like how NRS made their OGs hella weak just to make their new cats look dope af but in reality they not and never will be. And let's be honest here too there was some political stuff in play as well between Cassie defeating an over-powered Fallen Elder God to all the females being heavily clothed then use phrases like "being more realistic" as a scapegoat.
Lastly, I could seriously care less about the added bells and whistles to this game. If it ain't fun enough for me to be invested, why bother? Plus the Variation component seemed unnecessary. 9 will forever be the best installment of this game series until I am convinced otherwise.
    P.S - MK 11 sucks balls too!

6:48 - Or like Kingdom Hearts 3 which goes so catastrophically against the very thesis statement of what the original KH game was all about that you get the feeling Nomura actually hates the very idea of making a Disney Game at all and would rather drop the very Disney element which made KHerven stand out as a commercial product..........and that's on top of being cringe and making no sense.
Or Final Fantasy 7 Remake which also goes so catastrophically against what the original was all about _(i.e. death and loss)_ that it outright retcons Zach to have survived, has the side members of Avalanche survive, is heavily telegraphing that Aerith is going to survive and has even brought back the actual Sephiroth from another timeline just so he can be the actual big bad instead of Jenova. Why? So that folks can finally get the "epic" story centered around Cloud VS Sephiroth that people thought the original FF7 was about which surprise of all surprises it wasn't......and that's on top of being cringe and making no sense..........
Wait what were talking about again?
9:32 through - Yeah and y'know what else? That first Mortal Kombat movie's PG-13 rating didn't hurt it one bit! If anything it gave the film a tighter focus on trying to make a fun decent flick with fun decent characters and by the Elder Gods it ended up being such a beloved classic that it is still a core part of the franchise's identity right down to Kano being Australian and bloody Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa making a return for MK11! "Oh man that film sucks for not having the gore like the games!" oh yes it was truly a lost cause. _Well what about Annihilation then?_ We don't talk about Annihilation........

The only thing MKX has over MK11 is I can play as Ermac and Kenshi. Skarlet and Noob are awesome subs in 11, but Ermac is my favorite. Did anyone else notice 11 is basically a console made mobile game? I actually got mad at myself for buying 11 when I saw you can just have the AI play through the towers for you. I have this massive 40 gig file on my Switch and I'm more disappointed with it than having fun playing it. The story mode is cool and I like getting to go back and play different fights with characters (picking Subzero instead of Scorpion and vice versa), but once I'm done with it I don't really have anything left except the krypt and that's just okay. It slows down a lot when I'm in there a long time, so I'm not even encouraged to stay and explore lol. Also Erron Black was funner to use in X than 11

Challenge towers were ok, but they weren't Chess Kombat or Motor Kombat. Also, the two biggest selling points for MK over the decades is the voilence and the story. Midway era MK didn't have a super in-depth / well-balanced combat system compared to other fighting games. The thing that attracted people to the MK games was the voilence and the story - especially in the 3D era. Talking on forums people were way more focused on story and predicting characters based on how they'd fit in with the story, rather than fulfilling a gameplay role (grappler, zoner, and all that jazz).
I think the biggest issue with the story mode is the chapter system, and how it dictates the story itself. There are some genuinely cool moments and plot ideas in the story, but the execution lets it down. Letting the chapter system and "shock value" dictate the story, rather than just trying to tell the best story. Heck, the shock value even dictated Mileena's design (the lips).
Speaking of design: MKX has some of the best costumes of the entire franchise. I understand some people see them as too toned down / bland compared to the designs in other games from the franchise - but honestly, some of the older costumes were just way over the top or on the nose. Scorpion's MK9 costume for example: I hate it. I feel it's his second worst. It just feels too cartoony and like Deviant Art fan art. I don't particularly care for the (obviously Spawn inspired) cape in Snow Blind either. I'm all for having hellish and scorpion decals, but I prefer more practical designs (covering up the womens bodies because it's not practical, but putting them all in high heels.... good job NRS).
Anyway, I don't like giving scores for things, because it's usually done on a whim with no set rules on what adds / removes a specific amount of points. And even if it did; someone else will always disagree with the system and argue over a single decimal place, or compare it to the score of another game from a competely differen genre. Just seems pointless and distracting - I'd rather just focus on discussing the games actual merits and flaws rather than the point system for rating said game.

I haven't read the full review but what I'm picking up is that they feel the story is kinda tacky? I kinda agree with that and it should bear weight in a review, now HOW MUCH it should bear weight is a subjective matter. I personally liked the story of 11 better, the Jax arc is touching. Visually mkX is kinda bland colour vise, something both SF5 and mk11 did better but I remember playing mkx and having a blast and I'm a filthy casual. I'd give mkx 8.8 and mk11 an 9. Mk11 does the mkx stuff but better imo

In my opinion, fighting games like mortal kombat shouldn’t focus on a story mode. The things netherrealm studios has to do to keep it fresh must be exhausting. A reboot, half the cast gets killed off but the fans want them back so they come back as zombies, the keeper of time pulls characters together from different periods, now another complete reboot. Some times things just run their course. With a game that’s run for so long maybe less is more in terms of story

Mk X is a great game (prob the best Mk out of the last 3), but it has some problems, like the variations lock some basic shit that every character should have as their base kit, the graphics were ok for the time and aged very poorly today, honestly, Mk 9 stylized graphics aged less badly, the pc port was awful, the game had delay netcode for a long time and Shinnok is worst villain on MK lore.

  • @RowiDankelsaft

I know this video is focused in a fighting game, but IGN's bad metric extends to other stuff too. For example, they gave Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky a 4.9 and labeled it "Bad". That game is considered by many the best Pokémon spinoff game, a game heavily story based, that while it has its shortcomings (e.g. some dungeons could become very repetitive) that even its fans admit and accept, was scored badly because it was too similar to Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness.
And while we could say "Okay, Pokemon always does that, they release two games and then a third one thats like a mix of the previous two plus extra stuff", the review was full of inaccuracies, and pretty much like here where they lowered the score because they didnt like the character clothes or the topics mentioned in the story mode, in that review they lowered the score because the reviewer didnt like the music. To make it worse, the reviewer didnt even bother with the full game; they played only one of the "extra episodes" and that was it.
What about the original games? Explorers of Time and Darkness? I mean, if the "complete version" with lots of extra stuff is bad, the originals that had less stuff should be lower, right? Nope. They were scored as a 6.5. However, that score has a nuance: The reviewer of these apparently didnt play beyond Apple Woods, an early game dungeon- basically he didnt play more than a 20% of the story.
I know this may be a bit "nerdying about pokemon", a franchise that a lot of people into fighting games dont even care much about. However, I put this mainly to illustrate why nobody who takes videogames with any degree of seriousness will really respect IGN's reviews.

by all means you can lose points for having a bad story. Take Y2K RPG, no real glitches of bugs, just a really really bad story with boring gameplay at worse. In that game if anything the story is the weakest point in the game so naturally it'll loose points over it. As far as I'm concerned, as long as they create a story mode, it being bad or boring is a valid critisism since it's a part of the game.
Same for the costumes, I think that if the execution was so-so, then it's totally fair to remove points for it.
Same with the SFV comparison, yeah the game had less to offer but it executed well on what it had and while the game was broken in terms of imput lag, IGN is clearly not a competative crowd, they're casuals, and they review the games they play as casual players of games who just play for the fun of it so things like that tend to matter less to them.
