LESSON 6: RESEARCH PROBLEM: DEFINITION & STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

- Research as a discipline is concerned with seeking solutions to social problems which we call research problems. We defined a problem as the gap between what is and what ought to be. Remember we said that research is not conducted out pf here say but on a problem that exists and is well anchored on data. This lesson will introduce you to research problem. What is a good research problem? What are the sources of a research problem?
Is there a difference between research problem and statement of the problem? The answer is yes. Statement of the problem is the statement that shows that there is a need for research to be conducted. It explains clearly what is so critical about this problem. It emanates from the research problem. A good statement of the problem should contain 3 key information: Statement of Need, Statement of Knowledge Gap and Statement of Researchers Intuition. Lets explore these truths together in this lesson.

Hello Francis and Merry Christmas. Thank you for your question. Please always remember the problem dictates the topic and that is the essence of research. All topics sounds good and researchable but the pertinent question is, what is the problem?
Having said that, its also important to point out that a problem of 'effects' would require an experimental design so that you can compare two groups, one with the practices and the other without or before and after design where you look at the same group before the project and after the project

When stating/coming up with a research problem, please help me understand where to limit my scope of research based on the level of education for exam purposes eg. someone doing a diploma and another doing masters where do you advise them to limit there scope or where they can easily reach and come up with a satisfactory research. Much thanks.
Hello Franklin. Like you have correctly put, the scope of research is determined by the level of education. So that is one delimitation or scope of research. What that means is that while a masters student may be expected to review 80 references, a diploma may be expected to review 30. So you have the same problem with a masters level student but literature review, design chosen and analysis level will differ
