Strymon Volante - Great Tape Delay - Can the Helix get close?

- For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... Soon after grabbing a Strymon Iridium to see what the fuss was about, I got a Strymon Volante. This is their take on Magnetic Delays - and in particular I'm interested in the Tape Delay.
I also wanted to see - can I get anywhere in close with a Helix or HX Stomp?

I'll definitely be sticking the Retro Reel in before delay from now on. Sounds amazing and it's so simple but I never would have thought to try it.
I appreciate the wider stereo spread of the HX Stomp in this video. It’s addictingly immersive. But maaaaaaan as soon as you switched to the Glitz it was game over for me. Aural ecstasy. I must have listened to the little bit at 8:24-8:44 at least a dozen times. Beautiful job mate. You’re a Helix wizard!

Nice. I have a video suggestion that perhaps more than a few people might find interesting: "Transform a Single Coil to sound like a Humbucker using Helix/Line 6." And, vice versa of course, and other specific pickup types, like PAF, P90, Filtertron, etc. In fact, this could make an interesting short series, as many guitarists try to do more with less hardware - Almost the motto of Helix/Line 6. Thanks
The Volante sounds fabulous, the tape degradation is so well done. You got so damn close with the Stomp though ! Blind me and I couldn't tell which is which for sure aha

Another great video mate, the Volante is special. I let mine go because I just wasn't using it enough to justify the cost and I've regretted it ever since. Definitely can see another Volante in my future
I have them both and they both are great. The advantage of the Stomp is the explanded options that the pedal offers. I think the Volante offers immediate access on the pedal surface controls for tap tempo and the lovely head and repeat buttons which I love. they both sound awesome and they're not going anywhere. I also have the Strymon El Capiatan and it is not as full featured as the Volante, though pretty close and it is great in it's own way. BTW, I have the Volante after the Stomp and some times I hit on the Volante too and wow, awesome!

There’s also the Multitap 4 model in the Stomp that might be worth trying. It’s actually a little bit more similar to the Volante at least in the fact that it allows independent panning of each tap. So pairing that with the Retro Reel might lead to some interesting results, too.

Amazing how close you can get.....but how either gets used in a track is where the differences might fade

The volante was hands down the hardest pedal for me to sell before buying my helix. But the helix can get virtually the same tones. So in the end do I really miss my volante.....not really. But it is an amazing delay.
Helix is good for travelling, when you already know what you need, but these pedals with many knobs are much better for creativity and explorations at home studio.

I remember asking you about the volante when I first considering it, and you were more into the timeline at that point and didn't seem too keen on the Volante.

Seems that modulation on Strymon still have something else... Have you tried an smooth vibrato on the delay chain?

I like what your getting with the Glitz. You probably wouldn't have enough DSP if you wanted to add an amp/cab.

@@johnnathancordy Thanks John that’s good to know. I’m always looking for good ambient tones. I recently went back to my AC30 model and used a combination of 2 delays with dynamic hall at the end of the chain. Using the retro reel to fatten and warm the tone I am really enjoying the ambient tones.

Hi John. When putting delays within a loop, the set timings go AWOL. Any ideas?

Is it just me or does the Volante still sound that small touch better?
The volante is unlike anything on the market in terms of features and sound. The fact that the Stomp got that close is pretty awesome though.

@@Stoffendous Its probably close enough for most people and I dont think in a live setting anyone would notice, I am still keeping my Volante though.

I am in a delema. I brought the valeton gp 200lt while back, and wished gone for the helix stomp now after watching your videos on your brilliant channel.
I am trying to play some Shadows type music so was going to get the Strymon for the multi head echo to add to my valeton to get a shadows tone.
Being on a budget and home player only would the helix stomp get me close to a shadows tone out the box.
If so i will such sell the valeton and get the Helix stomp. Many thanks
Hmm out of the box you might not get straight to what you need, but there are lots of options of multi head stuff and multi tap delays?
I'd get the volante if it had BPM readout and 1/2 and 1/1 note subdivisions like BOSS.
With the timeline, I have to do math, because 1/4 is the largest... But it also only goes down to 35 bpm, so the slowest I can do 1/1 at is 140 bpm... :/
I really like this! I'm in the market for a volante, the only thing is that adding the Retro Reel in the chain will also affect my dry signal, is there a way for the retro reel to affect only the delay?
Hey David, split the delay down to path B, and mix at 100%, then retro reel will only affect the delay signal!
@@johnnathancordy This worked! Thank you, and to add to it, control your mix by lowering B side level on the mixer.
What speakers do you use to monitor?
