An evergreen song sung by Helen DCruz and Henry D Souza. Helen DCruz hails from Mangalore .And she happens to me my mother in law . :) Lovely lady - of great faith, full of wit, humor, intelligent and with a compassionate heart for the poor and needy. Navaz
Though born in a keralite family we used to listen to this song, early @ 8 am on vividh bharathi( mumbai) way back in 1970's where we had only radio as the sole entertainment, this song is still fresh on my mind..... great song.
Listening to this song after perhaps 34 years! The last time I heard it was during my IIT days in Kharagpur, and I heard it only once or twice either on SLBC or from one of my Sri Lankan friends. But the tune has stuck in my head all these years! I don't understand Konkan or Sinhalese, but this song is really good. Thank you for uploading.
Thanks for the song!! I knew Aunty Helen D'cruz very well in Kuwait. A close family friend even today. She's crossed a golden 80 years but cannot sing anymore. Glad she was able to make it to my wedding!! Her daughter Marianne is a professional singer and has played singing roles in the movie BLACK. If u recall, there was a party scene where Rani Mukherjee is trying to mouth singing with a lady crooner in a black dress....that is Marianne! :) I will see if i have a picture.
HI Michael, its called 'Konkani' the native language of Goa. I guess its Portuguese mixed. I listned to this, growing up in Sri Lanka back in the 70s. Thought I'd find it and post it. I enjoy it too although don't understand a word myself. Catchy melody!. Thanks for the comment.
This is a beautiful song...Where is Henry D'Souza now...? I keep going to Basrikatte every year. That's a beautiful small town..its a on hill top ...with one street...People at Basrikatte still remember Henry..but his family members are not available at that place now.
Hello Deepak, Thanks for the comment ! I agree, its a great song. Became very popular in Sri Lanka in the 70s and was given plenty of airtime by SLBC. I enjoyed it very much too !! Best Regards, Jude (London)
Thanks for the comment. I didn't trnslate it myself, cos' I don't understand Konkani. It was the courtsey of a loyal subscriber across the miles who helped me out with a great effort !!
HI guy's ! its been one of my best childhood song; i liked it & my whole family & friends in Bombay & Mangalore liked it too much. THANK'S. frm: Deepak D'souza { KUNDAPUR }
Hello vilmad007, Thanks for the lovely comment. I couldn't agree more with you, and you are absolutely right about the simple life we had with just the school and radio. This is what I too enjoy the most about these songs. Those were the days. We were very happy with the little we had, and I don't think it is the same for current generation although they have many other influences. Best Regards, Jude
Hi Vidhura, Fully agree with your sentiments. I enjoyed this back in the 70s as a growing up kid, but took me years to find out who sings it, and get hold of the original. The language is 'Konkani', the native language of Goa, India. I believe it is a Portuguese mix. Thanks for the comment. BR. Jude
Thanks for posting this beautiful song. Brings back memories of Bombay. Basrikatte is a town in Chikmagalur district (Karnataka), not Goa. About 100 miles or so from Mangalore.
@navazd Thanks for the comment and information. Helen has a great voice. I enjoyed this song immensely as teenager growing up in Sri Lanka. Pl. convey my sincere thanks to your mother in law for all the joy, rendered with her music. Rgds, Jude
This is very very good Jude, thanks so much for sharing this video to me!!! Coming from Bombay, I always appreciated the Goan n the Mangalorean spirit of life. Long live the music as this is simply so very refreshing. Thanks once again Jude and keep sharing. Bless
Shri Henry D’Souza, the prince and hero of Mother Konkani was born at Bassrikatte, near Koppa, KARNATAKA, (not in Goa as mentioned by you) a small town nestled amidst the beautiful and picturesque Western Ghats well known for their natural beauty.
Hi thanks for the wonderful update, i have been raised in karwar and mangalore and am very influenced by goan culture and traditions and really miss the same. Thanks for uploading this video, i used to hear this long time back and happy to find this on youtube. Thanks again.
@sflasrado Thanks for the comment. As you see from the description, information was referenced from Google. I am neither Indian or have ever been to India, so I have no clue as to where these towns are. If you see the comment thread there is conflicting information. I am afraid I have to appreciate the song for its musical value much more than where these towns are situated!
@MrCleret23 Thanks for the comment and valuable information. Sorry for the late acknowledgement due to lack of time. Do you have any photos of Helen? Regards, Jude
Hi Cal841, Thanks for the comment and correction. I read that he was born in Bassrikatte and studied and brought up in Mangalore, so it could be wrong information then. Rgds, Jude

Hello Namesake Goonewardena Thank you for this. Some days I play it 5 times in a row. This Original version is a masterpiece. The man is excellent, the woman is sublime. Perfect diction, pitch, grace notes, ADSR, timing, syncopation, emotion … near 100% in all departments. The backing is expert but sounding as if they are simply having fun. I am Sri Lankan (you know that) but hearing this I know that - with notable exceptions such Amaradeva - Sri Lankans have only moderate amounts of innate musical talent. Maybe raise the bar. BTW would love to have complete translation.
Hello Jude: I have saved this song to my favourites and still listening to it. Its amazing how good one feels inside to go down memory lane. Takes me back to happy childhood days when there were less complications in our lives and all we cared was going to school and listening to the current favourite songs in English and Konkani. I had been searching for this tune on You Tube for a long time. Thanks once again

Yes, you are correct. There are two Sinhalese versions. One by Luke Henricus and the other by Desmond De Silva & Indrani Perera.
English Translation courtsey of 'goan2' :-
Chorus (1)
He: Come, come, Katrina
She: No, no, I will not come
He: Ill take you from Byculla to Mahim
From Mahim to Bandra
And in Bandra Ill teach you about love
She: Everytime you follow me shamelessly
Calling out Katrin, Katrin, without any shame
He: I hold u in my arms and hug you
So where is the shame if I want to show u the world
