Also, there are different kinds of nursing programs. I think you were referring to the health assistant programs and not the registered nursing programs. For the Nurses' and Midwifery Council to allow you to sit for the registered nurse (RN) and midwifery (RM) licensure exams, you should have at least obtained D in selected high school courses including English and Maths. At times the path you take is not because you failed high school, it can be because nursing or teaching is your passion or because those are the only options you can afford.
To a large extent, the system is rotten and parents who caught wind of the scent decades ago, moved their kids to schools that run foreign curricula or established private schools. I taught briefly at a government school and there were kids there in P6 who couldn't read. Some could barely sound out 4 letter words but they were pushed ahead because of rules that make it tough to repeat kids. So many kids have learning disabilities that go unnoticed by teachers who are supposed to be able to spot this type of stuff. The teachers confidently made mistakes and would shut down any student who asked them questions they couldn't answer. The government had laudable ideas for education but has failed to supply the resources necessary to make them work. How did we go from a country who's teachers were well spoken of in other African countries to what we have now? The dedicated few still exist but many are forced out or leave for greener pastures and I can't blame them.

It’s not just teachers ooo. It’s almost the same at every public institution. I remember visiting Standards Authority for an enquiry and the lady there couldn’t even construct a simple sentence to demonstrate to me how to go about my application
