  • On 07-01-20 at 7:08 p.m., Spilve, the female adult eagle, returns to the nest after not being at it since 6:21 p.m. yesterday. After landing, she assesses the nest, noticing that the last supposed food item she brought nearly 24 hours prior has still gone uneaten. She also notices that Klints, her 1st and only offspring, lies motionless despite her presence.
She's unsure that Klints is actually dead, so she attempts to arouse and waken it more than once. She also moves the food item brought yesterday close to Klints' head, and picks it up again, doing the same at least once more.
At some defining point, Spilve recognizes that Klints has perished. It's at that moment of understanding and beyond that she begins the process of reconciling with her offspring's unfortunate death. She's not the only one, as a red-backed shrike, known for being predatory and carnivorous, flies over Spilve repeatedly, landing on the dead branch top to the right occasionally.
Spilve flies off the nest finally at 8:16 p.m. after sitting with her deceased Klints for 68 long minutes. She took sufficient time to process and reconcile with Klints' death, deciding to continue the pursuit of her own survival. Whether she returns or not to the nest to breed in future seasons only she will know if or when that moment comes. As for Virsis, the male adult eagle, he has not been seen at the nest for 10 days.
If viewers learn nothing more from viewing Spilve's return to discover Klints' death, it's that animals are sentient and demonstrate such abilities in these types of situational encounters.
For all that's known and unknown presently, there may not be future seasons with offspring at this nesting location. Whatever the outcome, there's been much appreciation for experiencing these golden eagles at this nest in Latvia, as learning opportunities for most viewers are valued. No matter what's thought about the outcome at this nest, gratitude to LVM for providing a unique viewing opportunity is deserved.

What an absolutely heartbreaking loss. Both for this magnificent Golden Eagle female who has lost her eaglet and her mate in less than two weeks and for the world with the loss of one of the next generation's rare Golden Eagles. I grieve with this beautiful, intelligent and sentient bird.
I read that Scientists created this nest to lure these birds there, possibly in an area of low prey availability, and then failed to step in even though the supporting male had disappeared and the female was obviously struggling to find food. This is shameful. The program should either be ended or policy should be changed. There is no excuse for allowing this to happen.
Robert Tragesser, thank you for showing this video and the very sad plight of this Golden Eagle family. As painful as it is, there are many lessons to be learned here. Hopefully the scientists "studying" this nest will realize their tragic errors and change their policies.

Since food is so scarce, I have to ask, do you think that she'll eventually eat it?

@@RobertTragesser youtube has a video about a pair of bald eagle eaglets who were being cared for by parents, father eagle died. In order to save the eaglets, park rangers rescued them and raised them in captivity, then released them. It was a success. In the video they explain losing the father is a death sentence for the eaglets as mother cannot provide enough on her own. You would enjoy the video it was so enlightening.
