This performance of Yellow After The Rain is not perfect, and I'm going to post another one later with more dynamics, faster tempo, and all together better playing. This is a video to show me what I need to work on.
Guys, this was posted 8 years ago. I think she's moved on past Yellow After The Rain lol I may be mistaken, but I think the time for critique on this has long since passed lol
And right now, you probably are much better, so I recommend learning the solo piece "Spanish Dances" and "Parody". I would tell you the composers, but i forgot sorry.
"I had negative 50 seconds to learn it and get it perfect or I'd fail music school and I didn't in negative 10 seconds perfect so I'm the best and I feel better about me." I can't believe some of the comments on this piece. You did great. I have to learn this for an audition and have no clue where to start. So I turned to this video.
Yall realize this was after only two months of learning the piece right? This piece was played pretty dang well for the timeframe. Yeah, i'm sure many people could play better than that, but that is because they are more experienced. For someone to play a piece that well like i said in only 2 months is still impressive. Plus she wasn't practicing it 24/7 either
Wow! That was amazing!!! I just started learning Four mallets and I actually played this for my first Jury. I got a standing ovation, but then I'm the only mallet percussionist at my college and most people are amazed with two mallet work. This blew me out of the water!!! Your accuracy and clarity was awesome! MAJOR Kudos! Keep up the great work!!!
Very nice!! I'm packing up my marimba, and lost the sheet music to this piece years ago so thought I'd look this up, I remember when I was learning this piece back in high school. Still love the sound of the marimba just don't have time to use it being away at college. Hopefully the local high school can use it rather than it sitting in my basement. Excellent job!
Wow! This is really good for your first four mallet piece. I just started learning four mallets this year, and my stuff isn't that clean yet. You're doing great! You've even inspired me to practice more. :) Good blessings on future pieces!
hye sweet performance. I just got this piece last week and I totally love it. have you played either of Old Djene or Ghaniah. they are probably a little harder than this and they are both sick piece you should try if you haven't already
very nice performance! I'm a total Pit Nerd! My main advice for you right now is to watch your third mallet during the 1,3,2,4 chord section. I'm learning this right now with you! Good luck :D
Oh my God!! You should definitely take out the part that says it's not perfect. I am a sophomore in college and that was also my first four mallet piece and you definitely did WAY better than I did at my recital. Amazing job. Mitch would be proud.
haha hit enter too soon.... Your technical skill is astounding - GREAT one-hand rolls! I was very impressed, you played the ink right up until the (INTENSELY DIFFICULT!) end :) A job well done! Truly beautiful work.
This might be one of my favorite four mallet pieces ever! My friend did this last year as a solo, and he's also doing Virginia Tate. Great job playing!
Great job!!!! That was also my first four mallet piece. I am fifteen years old and I am also in the pit in my marching band. I am now on my second piece ( Rain dance) and will be continuing on my journey of marimbas!!! haha. seriously though keep working at it! - Drew
My friends playing this and she's worked on it for 2 years and only has the tempo up to 86 so I told her it's fine bc she's got like all but one page memorized and she can work it up. you see, last year she played The Tempest and rocked it so I have total confidence in her and know she will make state like last year.
Hello! I do not know how long since you uploaded this video, but I'd like to make an indication (fault that I had xD), the first eighth notes have to go to the same tempo then once it enters the melody. Very good recording! =)
it sounded nice. i've heard it played before, but then again it was by a senior who spent most of his time on the marimba for hours at a time. it sounds good.
that piece is genius!.. the thuth is that not every percussionist can play it!... and you... with a few months, you do it so well that other persons I met... even my teacher of percussion... congratulations... sorry for the bad english... un abrazo desde Venezuela...
oh my gosh!! thats awesome!!! i learned this i think in 7th or 8th grade...bu ti didnt i even learn the whole thing.... you did really good!!!! :D i love girl Percussionists like myself!!
@rosskay you can get it from steveweissmusic I ordered mine off of there, and it just came in today. It's only about seven dollars, but the shipping is almost as much as the music is.
I would absolutely love to get the chance to play this piece again. 1:20 to about 2:06 took me FOREVER to get right. That part hurt my fingers a lot. I got a 1 on it at Solo and Ensemble when I played it my 8th grade year. ((: You played Wonderfully!
nice job on this piece. and to put it bluntly, this is a piece that is written for beginner-intermediate 4 mallet players. Many students do not really get into 4 mallet playing until college anyway. So, depending on your particular strengths, this piece cold be played equally well by either a middle schooler or an undergrad.
Lovely playing. I'm sure you've improved a lot even since taking this video. Any hints as to how I could acquire the sheet music for this song, anyone? I've been scouring the internet with no luck so far.
I use the burton grip even though i play only marimba and not a single bit of vibes. I find it easier to play with and less clumsy. I just finished learning this song. Do you use burton or musser grip?
not if you do it right. you get a fuller, more well-rounded sound when you lift off of the bars than something approaching a brittle, thin sound when you slam the mallets down into the instrument. the fortes are a little harder to hit, sure. but the softer dynamics do not lose their presence as easily. so not only are you going to add years to your hands, you're can also 'salvage' the sound a bit. but what do i know, i'm just a percussion major, right?
You really practiced that a lot didn't ya?:P You did a really good job:O I just started with 4 mallets myself to. I first did some technique and now i have to play this one and another piece ( Jonathan's Light ). But you really did a good job on this one :P Keep up the good work ! Rinze
I've watched lots of TH-cam clips of this piece, and this is by far my favourite. I think lots of people take this far too fast. Trying to get to grips with it myself, but after 10 minutes my fingers hurt...
Very nice!! As a fellow marimba player myself, let me say that was very impressive. It sounded really good, I just think the dynamics could be exaggerated a little more. I thought your technique was fantastic. What I found interesting about your technique was that in the video it looked exactly like the technique used in my schools percussion section. Just out of curiosity, what technique were you using?
hey, hi, yes. this is pretty cool actually. i wanted to play this as a solo at my school but my percussion coach said it was too easy. one small bit of advice while using stevens grip; you still need to use your wrist in order to gain optimal sound. i don't know if it's just the quality of the video throwing me off but it looks to me as though you're using a lot of upper arm. it's all in the wrists! :) but good job!
You sound really good and your technique looks great. Have you ever played anything by Eric Sammut? His 4 rotations are pretty cool...especially the 4th one. Keep up the awesome work!
It is great!!!! i'm learning how to plat this piece and it's harder than i thought...... Also, i can't get over the fact that there is like 14 keyboard instruments all around. It's so cool lol
Very good performance just a few things needed to be worked on. I'm currently learning this piece for a jury performance. What kind of mallets are you using?
this is awsome im a freshman in highschool and this is the first piece on 4 mallets ive played. im on the permintation part after the run and i learned it in less than 4 hours of practice. im hoping by the time im in college ill be able to play mutch harder things than this. to what i heard you only missed a few notes and need to work on balance of all the mallets i hear the 1st mallet sticking out in parts other than that great job!
HER FIRST 4 MALLET PIECE ! WTF ! THAT WAS AMAZING ! your technique is simply outstanding ! and note accuracy was extreamly high aswell ! im jelous ! can u please try teardrops by mitchel peters ! Youd sound lovely playing that too ! its only 3 mallets to but there is similair 4 mallet versions of it !
This is very good! I am terrible on the marimba.. I am trying to play Rain Dance and I keep hitting wrong notes - aka I can't keep the four mallets steady. :( It sucks when I have nothing to practice on.. :/
Very nice. One suggestion though...when you shift to the upper manual, either go all the way until you are on top of the resonators for the best quality of sound, or be on the very very edge of the key. I noticed you mostly played on the edge of the key, which is fine, but a lot of the time, you were on the nodes, causing a lack of sound from the instrument. Again, just a suggestion. Great job! Don't forget to bend the wrist. :)
This song is usually SO annoying to me after hearing it year after year after year, but you make it sound so beautiful! The only thing i'd suggest is a little bit softer mallets.
really good job just 2 suggestions play on very ends of the keys or right b4 the resonator but not on the nodes and make sure your thumbs are facing the ceilling
Wow, you just started playing, I'm learning 4 mallets right now, and it is hard as hell if you are doing the right technique. Can you give me some tips, I noticed you have really good technique. PLS.
@spongetot22 Yeah. Don't play this for solo and ensemble. So many people play this thinking they'll be a classy percussionist and play a 4-mallet solo! I recommend the Musser etudes.
My favorite are actually CN21, for general mallets. I find cn14 too soft for generals past the middle octave. You might also want to try the LS series, I personally don't like them but some people love them. The rule is just : try them and see if you feel them.
hey real good job, im a freshman and my teacher told me that i would be playing yellow after the rain for solo, and i was scared shitless. but yeah nice job
you sped up a ton at 1:03, but good if it's your first time. I learned the piece in one non-serious month. for my sophomore year, i hope i get to play afta-stuba and Dream of the cherry blossoms. keep up the good work!
wow I'm impressed the first time i heard that it was played by Dr. Brannon from Mansfield University and I haven't heard it played so good since then you are really talented and god I hate you for that haha.
I thought about doing that as a solo my senior year, but I figured out it was SIXTEEN pages long! D: eff that haha, i might do Rain Dance, that one sounds cool :D
im trying to learn this song but its really hard mostly because i dont have the music nd because im baritone player its been two months already and i only know the begining you sound good
Hey, great job!! But looking at the description, you say you will post another video with a faster tempo. You DEFINITELY don't need a faster tempo. The piece is marked at 126 and you're already going way over that. It shouldn't sound hurried. But fantastic job!
Guys, this was posted 8 years ago. I think she's moved on past Yellow After The Rain lol
I may be mistaken, but I think the time for critique on this has long since passed lol
This was an honor band audition piece this year and i just love the beginning part of this four mallet piece!
And right now, you probably are much better, so I recommend learning the solo piece "Spanish Dances" and "Parody". I would tell you the composers, but i forgot sorry.

ahh, learning four mallets. the pain on your ring fingers is a feeling you will never forget!
Well gee I thought that was a timpani. Good thing she told me it was a marimba.
Great job! It's 2017; if you're still playing, you must be incredible!!!
That performance was awesome!
I'm learning this right now and have a really low self-esteem so I'm not doing to well but hearing will surely help me.
GREAT JOB!!! ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR FIRST 4 MALLET PIECE. VERY STRONG ROLLS, VERY SMOOTH. WHAT OTHER PIECES HAVE YOU PLAYED? ANY MORE VIDEOS?
Sounds amazing. I wish I could play like this! Do you have the sheet music fo this?? It would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Wow! This is really good for your first four mallet piece. I just started learning four mallets this year, and my stuff isn't that clean yet. You're doing great! You've even inspired me to practice more. :) Good blessings on future pieces!
Wow you play it really fast!! It's great, I wish my rolls were as seamless as yours.
hye sweet performance. I just got this piece last week and I totally love it. have you played either of Old Djene or Ghaniah. they are probably a little harder than this and they are both sick piece you should try if you haven't already

It's plenty fast. Very expressive. You have a great feel for dynamics. Very cool.
Great job. This is the best playing of this piece I've seen on TH-cam.
haha hit enter too soon.... Your technical skill is astounding - GREAT one-hand rolls! I was very impressed, you played the ink right up until the (INTENSELY DIFFICULT!) end :) A job well done! Truly beautiful work.

TWO YEARS? im a freshman and i have some piano experience and this was my first year learning percussion and i picked up this piece in 1 month.
Well it was fairly difficult for her because she had to get used to 4 mallets
Will Ow
learning isn't a competition
Omg tempest was a great piece I'm only in 8th grade rn and I'm not amazing or anything but tempest will always be one of my favorites!!
Hello! I do not know how long since you uploaded this video, but I'd like to make an indication (fault that I had xD), the first eighth notes have to go to the same tempo then once it enters the melody. Very good recording! =)

I'm apparently playing this, this year. Last year I played Waves, and that was ... simple. This haw more to it! Can't wait to master it!
oh my gosh!! thats awesome!!! i learned this i think in 7th or 8th grade...bu ti didnt i even learn the whole thing.... you did really good!!!! :D i love girl Percussionists like myself!!
@rosskay you can get it from steveweissmusic
I ordered mine off of there, and it just came in today. It's only about seven dollars, but the shipping is almost as much as the music is.
I love the fact that your mallets are actually yellow, this piece is awesome :)

this was my first solo for marimba as well. you played really well...keep it up!

Excellent job. One of the best on TH-cam. I want to hear the "better" one. Haha
Very nice. One of my friends is working on this one, and hopefully I'll be good enough to tackle it fairly soon. Keep it up!
Great job! I am preforming this for my solo & ensemble competion this year, and I'm in 8th grade!
It is great!!!! i'm learning how to plat this piece and it's harder than i thought...... Also, i can't get over the fact that there is like 14 keyboard instruments all around. It's so cool lol
I just got this music today and was thinking about playing this at districts. Got any advice for someone who just got the music?
Very good performance just a few things needed to be worked on. I'm currently learning this piece for a jury performance.

5/5
Well done! Makes me want to go practice marimba some.

this is an amazing vid, i showed to my friend he's a junior and playing this on tuesday. great job playing. upload other vid lol
wow i'm learning that piece right now and i am really slow you were amazing! and to do it from memory was even better
Woah. Very good. :) I played this solo for contest this year, and I didn't play it as fast in the middle as you did. Way to keep it accurate and fast!
This is very good! I am terrible on the marimba.. I am trying to play Rain Dance and I keep hitting wrong notes - aka I can't keep the four mallets steady. :(
It sucks when I have nothing to practice on.. :/
I played this last year, I thought it was so fun! :) Good job!
nice ...your grip?....stevens?...beautifullll....
Omg, you're so good. That's SOOO good for your first 4 mallets piece :)
please tell me that you're going to be a percussion major! that was incredible!
Very nice. Whoah, is that at the TCHS?Cause it looks exactly like it.I went there to try out for beginning percussion..Nice song btw.
This song is usually SO annoying to me after hearing it year after year after year, but you make it sound so beautiful! The only thing i'd suggest is a little bit softer mallets.
I think those are malletech CN14. But I might be wrong.
I loved this song so much.
Why yes! I cannot do that! Mad skills to say the least!
really good job just 2 suggestions play on very ends of the keys or right b4 the resonator but not on the nodes and make sure your thumbs are facing the ceilling
Thank you, just looking for a really good set of marimba mallets
gacho! thats freaking good. nicely done. i wish had chops like that
hey, i have to learn this song for a solo competition and its a great example!
I've got until February 11th to learn this for a solo and ensemble......anyone got any tips?
that was extremely well-played. congrats, i loved it. =)
Wow, you just started playing, I'm learning 4 mallets right now, and it is hard as hell if you are doing the right technique. Can you give me some tips, I noticed you have really good technique. PLS.

this is nice :D i'm playing this for my recital class and i can't wait :D and i'm not nearly as up speed as you are girl good job :D
she is very very good and is very delightful to watch.
This video was made before I was born
wow I'm impressed the first time i heard that it was played by Dr. Brannon from Mansfield University and I haven't heard it played so good since then you are really talented and god I hate you for that haha.
very nice! i am going to try and play this, this year at my solo/ensemble.:)
WOW! amazing skills! Great job!
bravo Brandi x]
I found this video totally out of the blue lmao
malletech mallets are BEAST
This is really good! Good job! :) My friend is learning this solo now. I'll upload it if I get a chance.
nice tempo good playing one of the best on youtube!
I thought about doing that as a solo my senior year, but I figured out it was SIXTEEN pages long! D: eff that haha, i might do Rain Dance, that one sounds cool :D
That was my first four mallet piece too. I still like it.
Great job! True talent!
Are you attending a performing arts school? If so which one?
Wow! That was pretty hass ;) Most aggressive version I've every heard.
im trying to learn this song but its really hard mostly because i dont have the music nd because im baritone player its been two months already and i only know the begining you sound good
Hey, great job!! But looking at the description, you say you will post another video with a faster tempo. You DEFINITELY don't need a faster tempo. The piece is marked at 126 and you're already going way over that. It shouldn't sound hurried. But fantastic job!
Beautiful.
