- democracynow.org - This month marks the 10th anniversary of Rebecca Solnit’s groundbreaking essay, “Men Explain Things to Me.” In 2008, Solnit wrote, “Men explain things to me, and other women, whether or not they know what they’re talking about. … Every woman knows what I’m talking about. It’s the presumption that makes it hard, at times, for any woman in any field; that keeps women from speaking up and from being heard when they dare; that crushes young women into silence by indicating, the way harassment on the street does, that this is not their world. It trains us in self-doubt and self-limitation just as it exercises men’s unsupported overconfidence.” The essay has also been credited with launching the term “mansplaining,” though Rebecca Solnit did not coin the phrase. For more, we’re joined now by Rebecca Solnit, writer, historian and activist. She is the author of 20 books.

Dos Santos the problem isn't simply explaining, it's the fact that so many incompetent men feel the need to explain things to competent women.
Well, thats Because theyre incompetent! Thats where the danger of this publicaties resides. She seems to generalize, and thats not correct, and even ‘dangerous’ for our society. It polarizes men vs women, when we should just to bring more proximity between both.. (I agree with your comment)
And if theyre both incompetent? Never ending story? Or both competent? Remain in silence? Who are we to call someone incompetent?
it's sad that despite voices like this accurately describing the toxic culture that existed worldwide throughout history, little has changed in the daily lives of those without voice. it's a deep wound in the human consciousness that can't be healed by women alone.
Nothing will change. Hollywood will go back to its old sleazy self and the casting couch will remain until women start saying no at the time of any incident that occurs instead of going along to get the part. I find the term "men explain things to me" to be so ridiculous. As if women don't do the same. It's also very insulting to men and women. It doesn't invite real conversation because it's a passive aggressive blaming comment. Not something to create discussion, quite the opposite. The MeToo movement shed light on a problem which is good but blaming all men and other ridiculous b.s coming from this movement has gone to far. Feminists like this make me cringe. Makes me wonder if feminists actually understand men at all, or class for that matter.
Jolie Sarah you miss the point of the phrase. It's not that women don't do the same sometimes, it's about the phenomenon that compels so many men to assume superiority over women. As a woman who has to work with only men, I speak from experience when I say they can be condescending as fuck, it's ridiculous. All women know what I mean. It's men who think this is new because they don't notice themselves doing it (some do).
Women will do anything for a buck. Then they will complain about it later. They will never change.

I was washing dishes at 16 and a chef nuzzled my ass, soon facing a butcher knife while I explained where I'd shove it if he tried that again
No... he thought'd be cute to come up behind, grab my arms and try to show me how to wash dishes. Pervs tend to integrate normal helpful playful acts with being a jerk. He didn't know I'd already nearly killed the last idiot who thought it was cool to try and crotch grab a 14 year old boy a few years earlier. That old man packed up and moved out in under a week. So when I grabbed a butcher knife and lunged at the chef he got the drift right quick and naturally I was fired, then brought 8 football pals to eat there and I swear some of the chairs still had 4 legs when we left....but not many. My advice to girls and women who encounter an obviously clueless guy who doesn't understand NO, is obviously not politically correct, though as more juries side with victims who just quickly kill child molesters and rapists, things will improve.
And I applaud women with a good right cross or a quick flipkick reflex and enough snap force to get the guy to hurl while he's on his knees. Don't just kick em in the balls; you get extra points if they actually throw up on your shoe.
