Very exciting to see this progress. The metal roof sounds very nice! My late brother lived off grid for over 50 years in Northern California and forest fires were always a major concern. He dug a holding area for water and had an emergency pump with a deluge system on the roof. I never asked him but I am sure he would of preferred the metal design. Take care and be safe.

    Hi Shawn:
Yes, go with a metal roof. I have one and I live in Tahoe surrounded by trees and have to deal with wild fires. Also, I get a better price with house insurance because of the metal roof. They are also almost trouble free. Put a thick padding under the metal for when it rains. I've been watching your videos since you built the first cute little cabin and I'm excited to see the end product here. Good luck and God Bless.

    • @JohnnyArtPavlou
      @JohnnyArtPavlou 2 ปีที่แล้ว

What kind of padding are you suggesting. Because he wants to keep his metal roof off of his “hot roof” for air circulation. He’s going to have a six or 8 inches of insulation in the roof, and I imagine that will have some sound - deadening properties.

I must say I'm impressed with how far you've come in only a single year. I hadn't checked back for a while, and last night watched your latest and was amazed the roof is finished and windows in and it's all looking so habitable. It's really inspiring. I'm not building a cabin in northern Ontario, but your demonstration of industry has helped me with doing my own little thing. It just shows me that it's possible to just get up and do things; no government or WEF bureaucrats can stop you.

Looking fantastic. Metal roof seems to be the best choice these days. My garage has one and my house had one put on in 2008 both held up very well. With the threat of fire these days, metal is an excellent choice. Best of luck to you and your wonderful family.

Have to tell you….the Shawn method of potato growing is working really well in my garden. The straw cover kept the tubers moist and cool. I squashed about 500 potato beetles and won that battle. Already pulled a few plants to see what was happening and got 6 big ones per plant. I’m in roughly the same growing region as you although not in the woods. Great tip for a novice potato grower.

I do believe we are all looking forward to some cabin roof! I’ve live here with a metal roof on house and shop and have been very pleased over the 32 years I’ve been here. Had it been asphalt I’d be replacing it about now at a huge expense. And the metal roof is still going strong and was on 10-12 years before I lived here. I also live in the woods so it’s held up very well and i don’t worry about sparks from the wood stoves. It is slick when wet though. I only go up in good weather to clean chimneys, which I do every two to four weeks. Kind Thanks Shawn for the update on your beautiful home! Many Blessings with Love, Light, Peace and Joy of Being! SO many doggoned important things to be considered here. Amazing the number and amount of forces at play in building this place. Hope the weather holds off long enough for you to get it externally ready to work inside. I have learned so much watching and listening to you my head hurts. I am really enjoying this. Thanks for sharing all of this with all of us. I realize this takes a LOT from your time and effort put into building this place. May you never have obnoxious neighbors again!! You are much better off with the bear, moose, and other normal residents of the area. Humans are the curse of nature. Unless, they are willing, and ABLE to become a part of nature, as you are doing. More power to you and yours.

I am amazed at the speed at which its all coming together Shawn,
It makes a big difference to see it which the roof structure up, i am glad to hear that you are leaning towards a metal roof, at least that is a lot less work weight wise, just need a still day when you do it as there is nothing worse than having to fight the wind.
You mentioned something to do with the potatoes, something to do with curing them, what does this entail as its something i have not come across, usually we used to dig them up and keep them somewhere dry for a short time, is this what you mean?
What with the garden and the cabin, and helping your daughter out, your going to be a very busy man for a while.
I am really impressed with the way the cabin looks now, its almost looking like home although as you say there is a lot to do, i think once the roof us on ig will move very quickly as most of the real heavy work is now behind you, dare say therecare a few heavy things yet to take place but its showing very much better just what the finished product will be.I was thinking the last video, as to just how heavy the cabin is because there is a lot of very solid timber sitting there.
I am begining to see the purpose of the breeze way, that should keep a lot of the winter weather out plus somewhere to store outside clothing and boots and anything else that needs keeping at least dry for the most part, all I can say is well done, it does you proud, and will be there for a long time i am sure.
As usual, all the best for you and the family including of course Cali who looked like she was put out for not being played with, but that a bit hard when your on the roof!!
    Stay well , John Australia.

Good luck with the roof. My house was added on to in the 70s. Part of it had a flat roof. I didn't know how to get in that attic for 14 years and was surprised what i found. My house is 132 yrs old. They put a roof with not to much angle over the flat part to the peak of the old roof an cut a door in the original roof to get into the flat part. That room still has the wood shingles on 1 side. I finally found a picture of that side of the house and it had a big porch on the back. They put a work shop an laundry room where the porch was an a garage where the summer kitchen was. Its messed up bad now! Leaking on both sides of that low angled roof to the garage. I got ripped off by the roofer 20 yrs ago. O well! I'm old and won't have to deal with it much longer because I'm allergic to mold. It's so important to do it properly. You are a smart guy an i have faith in you to do it right. Thanks Shawn.

Been there since the beginning of hmm 2 cabins ago. Backyard build lol.
Seems a lifetime ago. All those roof angles & settling give me the creeps. You gotta have nerves of steel man.
Harvest time, under roof by winter. Simply amazingly wonderful!

Your roofing knowledge is incredible, that roofing business you owned sure paved dividends! Having owned a cottage among pines I would agree on the metal roof. We had an angle roof meet a flat area and was always leaking, your plan will definitely avoid that.

Greetings Shawn and family... solid engineering! 😎 I feel a sense of relief that you'll be sheltered and work in semi-warmth than 20 below zero this winter. Good times! 🐾

SHAWN & OUR CALI HELLO there Mate!!! This what I am thinking now I did a roof with a cabin like this and the part that has the flat roof I put a dormer on it so the snow would come on down better for the roof !!! Had what your doing on the roof on my roof also but a dormer for that smaller part !!! It sure did help on out with the heavy snows in Colorado ///metal heats on up faster also so the snow comes on down then faster !!!

I love a metal roof! Seeing the cabin progression has been very entertaining plus a learning experience for me, even though at 75 I am sure I will not be building one, lol. Can’t wait for your harvesting vlogs……

Well done! Even with all the other projects, your build has taken shape relatively quickly. I'm psyched to watch how the interior comes together once you get dried in!

Hi Shawn. When I read the title of your blog . I thought steel roof . Snow ❄️ slides off easy just make sure Cali wouldn’t get caught under it or your self for that matter . I agree now and through the fall great for working.

Crazy how that will drop 6 inches. Something to think about for the future for us. Thank you for the explanation.

I have metal roof and love it. I have so much insulation in the attic that if it rains hard I can still experience it without having to shout to be heard . Also it sheds the snow and its one of the things Insurance looks for to get a reduction with the cost for fire insurance.

You are doing such a great job!
And you have so many things to think about so it all turns out OK, like the logs settling and so on.
    Keep up the great work!

Wow, I thought you were almost finished, you sure have a lot more to do than meets the eye. But is certainly is a milestone, getting roofed in and sleeping in your cabin, all nice and dry. The three different roofs meeting each other, and the settling of the cabin, is too much for my brain to grasp, can`t wait to see the roof, windows, and what type of door you are going to build, congrats to ya on an amazing build, watching from Michigan.

I'm finding a difficult to express my admiration and appreciation for your content over the last few years. I look forward to each video and find I am able to decompress watching them. As a retired disabled veteran it certainly helps with the PTSD. Much respect and appreciation.
