    This is an incredibly thorough review. What's crazy is that when you do a positive review, you get accused of bias and when you do a negative review, you get told off for being mean. You can't win. Now, I have performed Akronym professionally and love it. I agree there could be an issue with the word context but i think I've worked a way to handle it and I've had incredible reactions. But here's what i love about magic. We all have different tastes and opinions. One person's worker is another person's meh. That's fine. We can't and shouldn't all agree. It's what makes the art so rich. I love this effect and have made it my own but i totally respect anyone who doesn't like it and wouldnt perform it. Same with spectators. Some will love and others will not. I always ask my audiences which effects they liked the most and with the same set, the answers are always different. We should celebrate our differing opinions and congratulate Craig for his deep dive honesty.

    I perform this at every gig since I got it three weeks ago. It kills. I use a mental die and a peeked word. It gets applause.
    Yes people instinctively realise it’s not the real Wikipedia when they bactrack it, as people do realise they were misdirected in a magic trick. But they don’t know how you got the peek, how you got the dice roll and how in the hell you programmed all of Wikipedia on their phone to influence their choice of words.
    It really kills.

    I agree with you 100% on your cons. The real deal breaker for me and other magicians is the social media fine print. Its BS and would never purchase as we all want to put stuff on social media especially at this price point. Keep speaking the truth we need much more of it. Thanks.

    Eugene Burger used to say people are not stupid. And if you ask them how your tricks are done when there leaving your show you will be surprised how many they will guess how there done.

    • @veganbadass
      @veganbadass หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sometimes they might guess correctly, but they are not always sure they are correct. In fact sometimes people guess incorrectly but they are sure they are correct. As long as they are having fun, or laughing or entertained then all is good. Also delivery is very helpful. I have an acting background like Matt, improv and believably are strong convince-rs. With Akronym you can force a subject which can avoid made up names such as Voldemort which can have limitations on the randomness of "blue" links. If you do a search for Banana, it is possible that we might see it link to European Sparrow. Let's say someone loves Baseball, well if you get to a word like "Sandstone" perhaps it was used in Ancient Greece's sports. No one should question the absurdity of where multiple clicks might take us on WIKI if the flow of the patter, situation and vibe is set. If someone chooses Atlantic Ocean, it should not seem out of place if you end up on Coconuts 3 clicks later.

    I get your issue with it, but you said you love wikitest in the beginning, and it has the same exact problem, if not more pronounced doesn’t it?

      I am not a big fan of WikiTest myself, because I believe spectators cannot help but read the sentence surrounding the selected word, which usually doesn't make sense. But I know several performers who are great at handling this by asking their spectator to select a word and having them quickly dismiss their phone. Akronym's design, on the other hand, suffers a big flaw: as Craig explained in the review, people have more time to read the word in its context, while you are writing it down. I'd add that another con is that your final reveal demands that you show the list of words. This is a great opportunity to catch that the words have nothing in common with each other: agriculture, then trombone, then biochemistry and so on.

    I purchase the app long before is official release. Since that at all of my gig and when people give me their favourit they saw akronym is in the fist 3 favourit effect every time. People talk me of this effect even few weeks after.

    • @veganbadass
      @veganbadass หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've been crushing with it too. I use Mental Die sometimes with it, what I do is reverse the situation and have spectator write down the words that they choose as I control my cell/pc/laptop/ipad as the spectator navigates the choices of words. If the delivery is casual they never question if the site is real or not. In fact I used this on other Magicians and they gave me honest responses, which were "what is it called and where can I buy it". If you have 2 spectators you can have one of them roll the "Die" and the other has the Sharpie and paper. There's multiple ways to perform this and the words are endless. If you know the spectator, you can force a word/name/place/ and it's amazing for them.

    Tech based magic in general is fantastically overrated by magicians. Many spectators in my area work in tech and STEM fields, and so have more general knowledge on these things than the magicians deploying the tech. If your phone is the centerpiece of the effect, the spec is extremely likely to guess (often correctly) that it's some kind of app. You'll be lucky if you don't spark an open conversation on the app they would write to accomplish the effect. I would not touch this effect under any circumstances after watching this. Thank you for your thorough, honest review!

    Really good review, thank you! I appreciate that you don't only highlight the pros in your reviews but also the cons. I'll still get the effect if the pros outweigh the cons for me, but I need to know them in oder to make an informed choice👍🏼

    This line of reasoning is very similar to how I feel with the standard Toxic force. Especially when used with Cipher for a birthday peek. (I'm not getting Toxic+, don't want an iPhone.) Unless you use a completely random number that the audience doesn't know about, they can always double check your work. I think someone in the FaceBook group said this actually happened at a performance. Some skeptic followed along using Wikipedia on his own phone, and wasn't finding the same words. I find it hilarious that there are more people are worried about Inject URL not looking 100% when not being the main focus, while Akronym's focus is on the words -- subsequentially the paragraphs -- and the fix is the exact same. Some nice variation of "You're just not doing it right."

    Great HONEST review!! I also have Wiki test amongst others. I perform with apps only sometimes as my experience is as soon as you want to do anything on a phone people immediately say out loud at some point “you must be using an app! Even if you’re not! People always assume anything to do with a phone is app magic. Now to clear this issue up. What does Matt think? Craig you said that he showed you this over a year ago. So has he been performing it? What does he think???

    Craig - you definitely makes some good points! I personally dig it. But you are on the money in terms of some of the weaknesses. And it is quite procedural so you would never do it first. one way that I’ve been doing it is when they go to a fake Wikipedia page - I suggest they make a quick swipe up to a more random portion of the page and then give me a hyperlink. Or have them open a sub menu and swipe up so they get a nice scroll and then give me a hyperlink.

    I believe the issue is probably that they aren't using AI correctly in order to generate the articles correctly and to inject the links in the correct words. And probably not even AI, they could just use the official Wiki API in order to get the real articles and change them as needed.

  • @MrGroenjester

    I’m truly shocked that Craig doesn’t have better audience management skills. His biggest concern about the app can easily be overcome by better interactions with the spectator. I also had to laugh about how he brought up over and over and over and over how much he had to pay for a trick. That to me is quite petty.

    • @magic-tv
      @magic-tv  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Sorry you didn’t like the review. I brought the cost up because it’s very expensive compared to other products and that should factor into any objective review. To not mention price when you are paying almost £100 would not make sense
      As for my audience management obviously it is poor but IMO when the core method is having the spectator read a wiki page which makes no sense (and you have to do it multiple times) then that is an issue
      Hope that helps

    I bought it and it crushed my drunk friends but am really hesitant to perform for sober people because if you dont move them along its pretty much game over, i would never do this on someone who is even slightly skeptical either. I think it has so much potential but they really need to use AI to find words that relate to the pages, some of them are laughable i even took a screenshot when I was practicing because every word that was clickable made no sense at all.

  • @johncampbell8340

    So how is this different from WikiTest which you raved about? The same problem exists. They have to choose a word from an article which has nothing to do with the subject.

    • @magic-tv
      @magic-tv  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I guess the big problem is with this you have to get them to look for anything up to 7 words. Each time they look for a word that’s out of context it makes it more obvious.
      With wiki test they are looking for one word, once so there is less risk.
      Does that make sense

    • @johncampbell8340
      @johncampbell8340 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@magic-tv yes, though in that case, I think it is important to clarify that the real issue is the repetition and not necessarily the content of the article. WikiTest proves that content alone is not much of a problem. That indicates that it might be a minimal or negligible problem in Acronym as well as long as the words are short.

      I perform WikiTest all the time with great success. I have them hold their phone to their chest and tell them to quickly glance at their phone and remember the first longer word. I also demonstrate that move on my phone to get my glimpse. I don’t have Akronym, but you could do the same thing, requesting the spectator to quickly press a link to ensure its randomness.
      The main problem with doing phone magic, however, is that spectators think it’s an app or the phone that does the work. RDigit solves this problem by doing “magic” directly on their phone as well. Also, RDigit hits hard and the magic starts right away.

    An aside: I have a serious beef with any company who provides a product for a review and then raises a fuss if the review isn't great. That's an immediate black mark on them.
    Tricks that are overly procedural completely lose spectators interest IMO. All respect to Matt, but definitely don't get too deep, hit before I fall asleep. If I have to wake up to get the final effect, it's too late to keep me engaged.
