Always felt this to be one of the crowning glories of Mozart's orchestral compositions. The andante is profound indeed! Beautifully performed here in the trying conditions of the pandemic. We know Mozart loved the viola, and it shows! What a shame he was never able to write a solo concerto for this instrument in his maturity!

There is no such thing as a hit or miss with Mozart's works
    All is splendid, great.
The only issue would be the quality of the performance and the
    acoustics
This performance‘s splendor of words can not arrive

Come rispose allora Mozart?

One of many things I love about this performance is the eye contact between the two soloists, which brings out visually the romantic duet aspect of the work. In most videos the violist hardly seems aware of the violinist standing next to them. Maybe the fact that Rachlin and McElravy are husband and wife has something to do with it.

It's amazing how much the sound of one particular viola changes when in a different player's hands.... as much as I love McElravy's graceful (and very Mozartian) playing, it does sound like she's a violinist dabbling with the viola. Rachlin plays the very same Storioni viola in a clip with Janine Jansen (here: th-cam.com/video/GZmiZaMJCsQ/w-d-xo.html ), playing the same piece, and he makes it sound so deep, growly and beefy. He almost gets a cello sound out of it!
It's nice to see Rachlin playing the violin part for once as well.
    Great performance overall!

    • @vKarl71
      @vKarl71 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Were they using the same bow? There are so many variables in recorded music (not to mention what youtub does to the sound) that it's difficult to compare. You'd have to hear the two musicians playing in the same place recorded with the same mic setup (and same sound mastering). But I'll check out that clip! I once heard Walter Trampler play this piece with Jaime Laredo & boy did he ever have a big sound - and a big viola!

The K. 364 finale always struck me as too frivolous and lite to work as a proper finale but, if nothing else, it helps ceremoniously bring matters to a close. The serious questions --- the critical concerns -- have been contemplated and decided in the lopsidedly "meatier" 1st and 2nd movements and we are invited to hang on a little while longer so that any un-dotted i's are so dotted, any uncrossed t's are crossed at last, business cards are exchanged by any so inclined, and everyone is made aware of the airport they're flying out of in the morning.
    K. 364 is structurally wonky since its finale, nice enough as it is, not only feels perfunctory next to its more substantive siblings but also entirely deflates the air of majestic dignity and the "aiming for nothing less than the sublime" musical drive characterizing movements I and II. This is sharp contrast to III which, with its shorter length, and lacking entirely in the soaring drama and aching lyricism it has the misfortune to follow, has an impact akin to the theater's lights coming on shortly before the audience needs to head home. The problem is, after the heavenly strains of movements one and two, the finale inconsiderately smacks us back down to Earth with its complete disinterest in the sort of loft and quasi-eathereality in the preceding movements that even Mozart's divine talent can't sugarcoat a feeling of "loss" pervading the movement, a sense of there having been a Fall which the finale's gayety and good-cheer can neither mask nor adequately compensate for (thus does the finale's jocosity take on the flavor of the party where the host doesn't realize he's having more of a good time than his guests who are itching to leave.) As it's nonetheless one of Mozart's most graceful and moving concert works, there is some risk of appearing churlish in being so vocally negative about a finale that appears insubstantial perhaps only under the light of the Olympian strivings of the other material. Which is another of saying the work is structurally unsound and Mozart should have known better. I say let he who holds out as churlish the want to stay put in Heaven after being let through its pearly gates show his face and make his farcical charges at the lovers of Art who seek elevation and transcendence that, I say, we find in the first two movements of the K.364 but not in its "let's get this show over" finale which I don't claim is entirely without charm and, at the end of the day, could be a victim of both the work's structure and also of the expectations and hopes unfairly thrust upon it by an an ever more insatiable audience demanding ever MORE intensity, MORE sublimity, MORE sequences/moments/passages which "Stir Our Hearts and Move Our Souls and Bring Us to Tears And Give a Glimpse of the Divine and the Otherworldly" blah blah blah. "Just take shrooms already" you want to tell them but, alas, that opportune moment when you can gracefully push psychedelics never quite comes and you, being brought up right, have the class and good taste to know that you mustn't force it, that it's bad taste to force it, that if you have to force it then it means it's pretty much over buddy boyo and thereafter you'll be seen as One of Those Who Just Doesn't Get It and Probably Never Will.

This performance was an absolute masterpiece. I'm no expert in music but I learnt a few things from this video. :
    1. That the conductor can be an absolute boss and take part in the performance as well
    2. That there's this really cool concept of dual lead violinists playing different pitch which made so much sense in the context of this song (usually there's only one solo musician in the spotlight)
    3. And that music can actually move me to tears
How I wish I was there in the hall to experience this spectacle, i'm definitely going to be looking out for any local concerts in my area to hopefully recreate the same emotions this video gave me

I bought a cd years ago. Columbia recording. At the end the viola and violin were rising together like birds circling up like a helix, then coming together. Thank you, nice but not what I was trying to find.
    Thank you.

Wow! The orchestra plays as if it were one instrument and the soloists are fabulous. Impressive!!! You would make Mozart cry with joy!!!

Was that the one that permitted composers realize that Mozart copied on Joseph Bologne by its high notes ? But this orchestra is breath taking ! Bravo !
