I sailed on Avalanche for four months from French Polynesia through 3 countries, 5 territories to Tonga, it's safe to say this boat is easily the most fun boat to sail and left me with some seriously good stories to take home!

The interviewee is really knowledgeable and shares his anecdotes with humour and insight. Well worth a watch. And that’s a Real Adventure boat.
I know what he means about having a spray/wave proof bimini, the sensation of relief as the water hits is like falling into icy water wearing a dry suit, the body braces out of reflex to be chilled to the bone in about a 10th of a second and then you hit the water..... and stay all warm and dry......... ........ bliss....... then you get that beautiful rush of relaxation and sense of gratitude as you’ve just bypassed being hammered by cold induced aquatic agony....... bliss.......
I do love the boat and skipper interviews! Never a dull story.

Raced on the only Corsair 43 ever built ... "Triple Threat" ... owned by Mr Tim Lyons and based out of Annapolis Md. There is nothing like "busting" through a "mono-moran" fleet in an overnight race w/ twice their boat-speed ... or more. (our class always started last ...) And w/ our running lights 30' apart they would think we where some PRHF A0 70-80' boat overtaking them ... winches would start to "click", sails adjusted, but it wouldn't help ... then we heard many a time ... "Damn-it, it's just a multi-hull/trimaran .... "
And yes ... +25knts is a "Hoot" on a Tri-maran/Catamaran ... she starts to hum ... like a swarm of angry bees ... picks her skirts up ... you flatten the sails as the apparent wind moves farther aft ... you have a lil' rooster tail way way way back there ... and she starts really really "moving out" ...
Also w/ our shallow draft ... and early finish, we usually get a nice spot at the dock in-shore of the deep draft mono-marans ... there by a shorter walk to the showers ... and the bar ... HaHa

Thanks Beth, we're so glad you enjoyed it! It really is cool to get a peak into a boat that is so unlike anything we are familiar with and to hear some of John's stories. As for the boat tour/interview videos, there are five and we will publish them every Sunday and Wednesday until they're all uploaded...then we'll go back to the regular Sunday schedule. What an awesome passage-making yacht! It is no coincidence that the Polynesians originally conquered oceans using multihulls (it is worth reading the story of Kontiki). Just a minor point... The outrigger hulls are called "amas", the cross-members are called "akas", and the middle hull of a trimaran is called a "vaka" (see Wikipedia) Great interview!

I had several long conversations with John Barry when Avalanche was up for sale here in California a couple of years ago. He was letting that beast go for around 275k if i recall correctly. Man, my nipples were hard I wanted it so bad. It is a huge powerful boat that can go anywhere you have the desire to go to. On one of our conversations John and i were talking about Avalanche's sails. John is a very cool and knowledgable sailor. He had the mainsail made to his specs by North sails if i recall correctly (don't hold me to it). I asked the condition of the sail since he had circumnavigated. He said was still pretty good even after all those nautical miles and some pretty tough conditions. I asked him how much to replace it with something similar. He said around 80K. And that...boys and girls...is what separates the haves and haves nots. I could afford the boat. But the upkeep of a powerful and big yacht was out of my reach. John was divesting himself of Avalanche to get into a large performance catamaran out of China. HH I believe. I wished him well. He is a very good man and excellent communicator. I enjoyed every minute of time I spent talking about Avalanche and his experience on her.

30 knots wow. I tbink i havent heard the word dead reconing since tonga in 1991.
I forgot all about that. I carry paper too but i keep 5 gps and i guess if i loose the ploter i would setnup a dead reconing. Awesome boat.

I'm always long winded so please bear with me as I get to my questions:
I have taken an interest in sailing, never done it, but it looks dreamy. I'm certain there are downsides but that's another story. So, as I've studied, I have learned about various boats. Though the traditional monohull always holds that true build in my eyes, I am one that adores getting there faster. Why not powerboat? Fuel. Why spend when we can harness energy Earth gives us?
So, I studied up and I'm liking how it seems trimarans are able to achieve faster speeds. I know there are racers but I don't need super speed, just faster cruising with some home comfort.
I see your video here and this trimaran certain speaks my speed language. The Paragon is certainly the true beauty, though, with that monohull design. It's a bit rough in decisions. I thought I was sold on speed until I hear mr. Barry say that speed has caused clashes with whales. Now that is something I do not like.
So, my question boils down to your opinion: knowing the speed of trimarans and it offering to get you further faster presenting the opportunity to see more plus possibly escaping storms; would you switch to a trimaran if you could?

30+ knots...he even said it's the closest you'll get to flying in a boat. Ha, I can't imagine! We've gone 12+ knots with some serious current behind us, but the only way we'll achieve 30+ knots is if Paragon is on a truck transport! (✿◠‿◠) ⚓-Monique

When John said "aka" is the port side outrigger I thought maybe I had been using that term wrong so did some searching on the internet for confirmation. Instead I found confirmation of how I've been using the terms-- aka is the connector between the ama and main hull. My boat is a, tiny in comparison, F27 Corsair and not really ocean worthy and my max speed record was only 21.
Thanks another interesting boat tour 👍👍👍 would never of thought someone would take a racing machine like that north into iceberg water 😱 just shows it takes all folks. Then again when you listen to him the boat has a water tight bulkhead and the two outer hulls are sealed probably better equipped than most of the mono hulls going north. As they say everyday is a school day 👏👏👏⛵⛵⛵🏴
I like that...every day is a school day. Yea, we saw a lot of different boats when we were in Greenland from smaller cruising boats to heavy-duty research vessels, but nothing like s/v Avalanche! She really was a sight to see in those waters. We're just glad John was able to take the time to give us a little tour and give us some insight into the workings of this unique boat! (✿◠‿◠) ⚓-Monique

Just a little correction . . . terminology for outer hulls on trimaran - AMA's, regardless of port/starboard. Crossarms are AKA's. Center hull, VAKA.

Seriously! I can't even imagine speeds of that magnitude, and they really have to be extra diligent during their watches. When you're going that fast you could be on top of something before you know it! Ha, I'm perfectly happy with our 5-7 knots! -M

wood stove is a better dryer, i think i read propane adds water. you do need a heat source. constant cold would really ware on you.
The little Kerosene Drip Marine Stoves use about 3 to 6 gallons a week. That is for 24hrs continuously on.
@@MrRourk they are convenient . but room for a wood stove as well. small firebox not much wood . .. and a real drying out at times. .
Any stove or heater that vents its combustion gases overboard will dry the boat.
Propane, wood, diesel or kerosene it doesn't matter.
Those that don't vent are usually either kerosene, alcohol or propane and they add water vapour to the atmosphere inside the boat.

Aww very nice indeed. Hope you had a good passage and not to much of that evil fog. I’ve been getting very little sailing as I’m getting new valve stem seals and new head gasket. That’s the problem I had from when I met you in Stornaway .

Hi Frank, in the previous episode (#35) John explained that they lost their transmission and how they jury rigged their dinghy outboard to the stern of Avalanche for propulsion. Coming up in the next episodes we'll take a closer look.

Oh they flip. However it is a lot less likely to happen than in a catamaran. Where they fail is wasted space. Don't forget at a Marina they are charging you for 3 spaces.

The Neel Designs are horrendous at how they utilize space. A equivalent catamaran has a lot more going for it.
@@MrRourk I was referring to how they used one deck across 3 hulls. Just that in and of itself is a better use of space.
Not my kind of boat, but to each their own I guess.
