I am a self-taught developer working professionally with C#, C++ for 6 years now. I don't consider coding as "Work" I just have fun doing it, that's the most important part imho

This is literally best imho that you tried to describe such a big picture about long way, even knowing that it is hard subject to describe this abstraction and what vary for all ppl out there, touching many subjects from your own experiences and sharing it. Thanks a lot for your support.

How well your career goes as an engineer is really more a function of interest, passion and willpower than it is education. I have a BS and MS in Electrical & Computer Engineering and know a couple self-taught co-workers who blow most degree holders out of the water.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both self education and formal education. There's some very useful concepts you would never bother outside the classroom such as data structures and algorithms. A self education, however, gives you a certain naïveté. Phil Knight of Nike who didn't have a formal business education said: "We started Nike because we were too stupid to know it couldn't be done."

Trying to get a bourne shell script to run on HP-UX/AIX/Linux, what a nightmare. but it taught me a lot of the nuances and the ugliness also of shell scripting, I think the common custom is, if it's more than 100 lines switch to a full featured programming lang.

I'm in my second year at university but I've learnt almost everything at home. The best thing about university is that it has forced me to learn faster by giving me lots of assignments, but that's about it. It's not a very good university, so maybe I'd learn more at MIT or something but I find it hard to believe that anyone learned programming in a classroom.

old(ish) guy with degrees here - make sure you fall for the networking meme. that's the most bang for your buck part of an undergrad education.

@@ReagueOfRegends I'll try to, hopefully there are some clubs that aren't just webdev... Honestly it's hard to be motivated to network because nobody I've talked to really cares about programming. Probably because all the nerds are hiding at home
