Hip hop also had quite a substantial affect on the genre too. Vaporwave probably wouldn’t exist had it not been for sampling, chopping & screwing, and the pure instrumental bliss of artists like MF DOOM, J Dilla, RZA, Kanye, and Madlib. The Avalanches also come to mind. But Daniel was the synthesis the genre needed - he was the one that brought together the sounds that would bring the genre into being.
Just my opnion, I think Screw(R. I. P) should be credited if the video was more "technical" oriented(chop e slow down samples for ex,like you said) but "conceptually" they are on two different tracks for me..even if Eccojams for Lopatin was also a sort of tribute to Screw(R.I.P)
Dude, thank you. Seb. mentions chopping and screwing but doesn't mention DJ Screw. If there were no Screw, Eccojams v1 most likely would never have happened. Chopping and Screwing is not rocket science by any, any means. It's just a different genre of music being screwed, as opposed to rap. I was screwing my friend's songs for fun forever ago.
Excellent job. In fact, this encapsulates not only what Daniel Lopatin has done but also why vaporwave is the way it is. So for me personally, my first exposure to 0PN was not through Returnal or Replica but from the next album, R Plus Seven. Because of this and what it would be mean to me later on, this album for me is what encapsulates vaporwave. Granted it doesn’t use artefacts of past music in the way that Replica or Eccojams as Chuck Person did. But it goes even more basic and fundamental: a basic MIDI soundfont (or what sounds like it at least). The timbre evokes the 1980s and even into the 1990s. And yet it is executed in a manner that is a far cry from those decades. This to me is what makes the scene exciting. It’s not just mere regurgitation or recycling of past efforts. It’s building on the past to create something new and interesting. Furthermore, it’s the drive to create something new or different or true to the self that’s key to the scene. In fact, when I started listening to vw back in late 2017, I found that relentless creative drive to be quite strong there. And as someone who was in a music-making hiatus (for an assortment of reasons), it reminded me of why I wanted to make music in the first place. And it didn’t take me long to realise: there is no reason as to why I couldn’t do this. Thus, I was musically reborn as キラヨシ. As my thank you to Daniel Lopatin, the first track of Reincarnated Resurrection (called Reenkarniĝo revivigita or Resurrected Reincarnation), contains my own processed loop from Ian Van Dahl’s “Castles in the Sky” (which is the second half of A3).
I won't disagree with anything you said here but I also think James Ferraro deserves credit for developing this "cheesy synth" style of music. Rerex Pt 1 and 2, Clear, Heaven's Gate - all extremely lofi and without sampling but still maintain that same theme and feel. It amazes me when an artist can take such cheesy and unconventional synth sounds and form a masterpiece with them.

I like oneohtrix point never, or else I wouldn't have clicked on this video, but Boards of Canada is way under credited for their influence.. if we're gonna be real, the Sandison brothers are the real godfathers of vaporwave, whilst oneohtrix is more or less just propelled forward by the subgenre.
Nah, BoC certainly had an influence but OPN, James Ferraro, Spencer Clark, and the rest of the hypno pop crew are what really got it going. By saying that they're the ones that started it due to the influence they had we can trace it back further to the first 2 AFX ambient albums, as OPN has sighted them as some of his most influential albums ever.
Amazing video! I'm the uploader of the ECCOJAMS album and been listening to it for almost 10 years now. I never thought of Replica as a vaporwave album, but as you mention it I could get into that idea. My favorite OPN album is R Plus 7, because for me that album is even closer to vaporwave. For me, Replica is the TV commercial vaporwave, but OPN Style. But, R Plus Seven is more like a 'corporate lobby'/'modern architecture'/'bathroom' vaporwave album for me, if that makes sense ;)

I was subscribed to sunsetcorp since a long time ago. I didn't even know that it was OPN. He had a lot of playlists of videos on the channel and they were a blast to watch. So random and yet so meaningful somehow, best samples ever. I was able to save a few of them but I guess the culture is lost forever :(
This is spot on, but I think you should have focused less on the superficial details of the music and said more about the plot undercurrent running through the albums, i.e. post-nuclear apocalyptic technological singularity and A.I. inevitably experiencing an echo of psychedelic enlightenment before collapsing into disarray, as we had before, into the fold of time's unseeing infinite cycle. great editing though.
I really enjoyed the production of this video, and this video is good for someone just getting into Oneohtrix Point Never, but there's really been a lot missed, mixed up, and misattributed. Most importantly to the video, Oneohtrix Point Never didn't start making vaporwave as Chuck Perrson, he and Joel Ford had a project called Games where they released 3 mixtapes of pure vaporwave before Eccojams released. It's also maybe understandable to attribute Replica's influences to Returnal, but if you're interested in vaporwave, Oneohtrix Point Never released an album called KGB Nights / Blue Drive (Oct 2009) before even Russian Mind which had multiple pieces of proto-vaporwave and sampled noise. Some other nit-picks that are kinda beside the point of the video: choosing to start Daniel Lopatin's electronic career with Infinity Window's second album is just strange. It's literally his 27th release, and was released the same year as KGB Nights. He had been releasing electronic music as Dania Shapes as early as 2004 before he took the name Oneohtrix Point Never, and the glitch-based noise of those releases could've been interesting to draw parallels with in Replica and Eccojams. Year and a half old video so idk who is really gonna read this but yeah, good info to keep in mind.

Fantastic points about anonymity and artistic freedom. In addition to avoiding copyright, I think there can be a lot pressure for modern plunderphonic artists to reference and manipulate obscure media. The most obvious benefit being that the listener (or even the artist) lacks pre-conceived notions about the obscure sample. And when talking about authorship, the obscurity itself can give the sense that a particular manipulation is more "yours" as an artist. What's incredible about "Eccojams" is that instead of relying on obscure samples, Lopatin obscures massively familiar music. He repeatedly takes them somewhere new or beyond recognition. As many have pointed out, the album finds moments and feelings within a sample and extend them seemingly to infinity. The question then arises: was that feeling always there within the original? Or did the artist create it? Did he add to it? Or both? That's a pervasive question across Vaporwave as a whole, I guess. Where does one artists work begin, and the others end. Point being: the Chuck Person moniker (perhaps "chuck" a play on words for "throwing" or "throwaway"?) seems to have given Lapatin the freedom to explore a concept without any ties-despite the fact that almost all of us have ties to the music he sampled. Very glad Eccojams exists.

I got into vaporwave through 0PN, and got into 0PN from my favorite drone artist, Forest Swords. Not sure that the trajectory from FS to 0PN is as obvious to everyone else, but bless 'em both because I love them. And agreed, Replica is one of the best albums. Period. Ferraro's Discovery and Last American Hero came out in 2008! All the New Age Tapes came out way before that. Love the research just wanted to share some music because I got to experience it.
