    In today's video, I take a unique and data-driven approach to understanding the Bible and showcasing who god really is and what he really cares about (assuming he was real). Using the word count as my guide, I explore many aspects of the word of god.
    In this video, I cover the following:
    -Comparison between the old and new testament
    -How god references the genders and children
    -Brief overview of how the bible was put together
    -God's 613 commandments
    -New Testament values
    -Jesus's words in scripture
    -Overview of the Patriarchs

      I attended a one year program on biblical study, and on the first day, the principle gave us a warning. He said that if we are serious about keeping our faith, then we need to be on our guard, because the statistics show that the number one reason people leave the faith is due to actually studying the Bible. At the time I thought, yeah, but my faith is strong , that won't happen to me...

    "Not morally useful in this day and age" is spot on.
    We atheists are so often by told by "holier-than-thou" Christians that we get really our morals from the bible even if we say we don't, or we have no morals, or some BS like that.
    The fact is they don't get their morals from the bible either, they just use it as a cherry-picked cover-all misquoted or misrepresented excuse to behave exactly how they wanted to in the first place.

      Speaking of the commandments the first 5 could easily be just one commandment and you shouldnt kill, commit adultery, steal, lie and be jealous could also be one commandment saying you should respect the integrity and property of others instead of pointing out a select few crimes while leaving out more serious ones. Its almost like they were written by someone religious with a very narrow minded world view.

      And not only that but to stay faithful to christianity most christians has formed their beliefs for their own benefit or according to their own morals completely ignoring the very foundation of christianity. Like when god says christians will suffer trough the tribulation you either invent the rapture to spare yourself or kill your children to spare them. And with the concept of hell ,as a place of everlasting torture that christians completely made up, we can clearly see they have no problem with other people suffering forever while they cant suffer for a very short period of time.

    In a recent debate I watched with Richard Carrier, he was asking the question that if Jesus really had the knowledge of God, why did he not introduce the idea of germ theory (the lepers) or challenge the common views about food (cleanliness laws)? Instead it was clear he was simply a person of his own time and culture, and not a divine character with the nature of God.

      This is Christ's witness of the beginning that has parts from before Ge:1:1.
      Proverb:8:22-36:
      The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way,
      before his works of old.
      I was set up from everlasting,
      from the beginning,
      or ever the earth was.
      When there were no depths,
      I was brought forth;
      when there were no fountains abounding with water.
      Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
      While as yet he had not made the earth,
      nor the fields,
      nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
      When he prepared the heavens,
      I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
      When he established the clouds above:
      when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
      When he gave to the sea his decree,
      that the waters should not pass his commandment:
      when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
      Then I was by him,
      as one brought up with him:
      and I was daily his delight,
      rejoicing always before him;
      Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth;
      and my delights were with the sons of men.
      Now therefore hearken unto me,
      O ye children:
      for blessed are they that keep my ways.
      Hear instruction,
      and be wise,
      and refuse it not.
      Blessed is the man that heareth me,
      watching daily at my gates,
      waiting at the posts of my doors.
      For whoso findeth me findeth life,
      and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
      But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul:
      all they that hate me love death.
      This Abraham's High Priest:
      Heb:7:1-4:
      For this Melchisedec,
      king of Salem,
      priest of the most high God,
      who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings,
      and blessed him;
      To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all;
      first being by interpretation King of righteousness,
      and after that also King of Salem,
      which is,
      King of peace;
      Without father,
      without mother,
      without descent,
      having neither beginning of days,
      nor end of life;
      but made like unto the Son of God;
      abideth a priest continually.
      Now consider how great this man was,
      unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
      Ge:14:18:
      And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine:
      and he was the priest of the most high God.
      Ge:18:1-3:
      And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre:
      and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
      And he lift up his eyes and looked,
      and,
      lo,
      three men stood by him:
      and when he saw them,
      he ran to meet them from the tent door,
      and bowed himself toward the ground,
      And said,
      My Lord,
      if now I have found favour in thy sight,
      pass not away,
      I pray thee,
      from thy servant:

      @@MindShift-Brandon You're making it sound like God doesn't do anything in our lives as part of his relationship with us, this just shows that you were never a true born again Christian to begin with.
      God didn't just give us the bible and that's it he interacts with us in our relationship with him as true born again Christians.
      If you never had an interaction with God, then you never even had a relationship with him to begin with.
      God cured me of a nervous condition that I had since childhood of biting my fingernails until they bled, he helped me overcome emotional issues that were driving me to most likely eventually go on a killing spree had something NOT been done to help me to overcome them because I wasn't doing that great of a job even with the help that I was getting from other people because their help didn't help at all.
      In the end it was God that helped me to become the person that I am today.
      So, you have no clue whatsoever of what you are talking about because you never had a relationship with God to begin with, you were never a true Christian in the first place.
      If you were a true born again Christian claiming to be an ex-Christan now you wouldn't be denying the existence of God while being an ex-Christian because you would know beyond all doubt that God does exist as a former true born again ex-Christian.
      You as a true born again ex-Christian would be like having an ex-wife or an ex-husband, you wouldn't be able to deny the existence of your ex-wife or ex-husband you just wouldn't be their wife or husband anymore at least in your eyes.
      But what you fail to understand is that no one can be a true born again ex-Christian because salvation can't be lost, your soul belongs to God after you get saved.
      Your soul and reborn spirit become a new creature when you're a true born again Christian and that new creature is 100% loyal to God, so every action that you take against God is NOT being done by your true self which is the new creature in God's eyes it is being done by your flesh.
      I personally don't believe that you or anyone else that claims to be an ex-Christain were ever true born again Christians to begin with, but if you were then you are still saved because you are taking your actions against God in the flesh and NOT the new creature that would be your true self in God's eyes if you were a true born again Christian.
      I can understand one choosing to end their relationship with God in the flesh if they are a true born again Christian for whatever crazy and stupid reason that they could give to do such a thing, but I can't see a true born again ex-Christian denying the existence of God as a true born again ex-Christian because the "ex" in an ex-wife or ex-husband can't be denied their existence because they still exist.
      Do you get what I am saying when it comes to this?
      If you are denying the existence of God now as a so called ex-Christain then that only proves that you were never a true born again Christian to begin with because when you become a true born again Christian you get confirmation so that you know the following three things beyond all doubt and they are:
      1) God's very existence.
      2) Your salvation.
      3) Your relationship with God.

      @@MindShift-Brandon Let's keep in mind here that the bible is written to fallen human beings that have sinned against God.
      If sin never entered the world through Adam and Eve's sin, then the bible would've never been written to begin with.
      Adam and Eve were equals and women and men are still equals in God's eyes, but we as humans have been placed under a curse due to sin being in the world and in that curse, women are to be ruled over NOT by men, but by their husbands.
      Genesis 3:16 (KJV): “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”
      But in the bible the husband is also told to be loving and respectful to his wife in that ruling over her and NOT cruel.
      Both atheists and ex-Christians (who were never true born again Christians in the first place from my perspective of things since they deny the existence of God as ex-Christians which they wouldn't even be able to do as ex-Christians because an ex-Christian would still know that God exists) always point out verses in the bible that support their case while ignoring the clarification verses that tell us how to do specific things like how a husband is supposed to rule over his wife and etc.
      That is 100% wrong to do, and it just shows how wrong both atheists and ex-Christians are when it comes to their attitude against God and the bible.

    Firebrand atheist, bubbling over with enthusiasm to share this all this data...!! Feels like a primer for an atheist Bible Study session. I began seriously deconstructing my faith back when #TheBibleReloaded was uploading episodes of their Atheist Bible Study; I think it was a weekly thing back then, and that channel did a lot to help me understand what I was reading, but they did it in such a purposely vulgar way that it wasn't something I felt comfortable sharing with any loved ones who were Christian. Most of the atheist TH-cam stuff at that time was kinda angrier and maybe a little angstier than now.
    I'd be willing to watch an Atheist Bible Study series again, but only if it had the kind of tone this channel has. I don't mind humor, but I don't particularly feel the need to blaspheme my entire way through it. Still, I respected Hannah (Hugo) and Jake for doing it page by page, verse by verse, cover to cover. I wish they'd have published the titles that way. Now it's hard to find the specific books, chapters and verses without potentially wading through several hours of their content.
    The topics covered on this channel are done with the kind of respect that often tempts me to share with my parents. Years ago, I woulda sent something like this to them, but now my mom is in a nursing home, and my stepdad takes such wonderful care of her, but Jesus, prayer and the Bible are kinda their whole world now. It comforts them. I won't say it's harmless, but it's not up to me to educate them at this point. The nursing home itself is run by nuns; I walk through a chapel on the way to see them each time i visit. I don't think it's the right time anymore to try to be confrontational.
    Thanks for these videos, man. I find this channel's overall messaging somehow quietly comforting, but I keep wishing this had been around like a decade ago. Nevertheless, if this channel ever needs ideas for more content, a new Bible Study for atheists could be pretty badass. I'd watch if it could be done with #MindShift's level of respect, understanding and dedication.

      To be fair, Hannah and Jake were doing more of a satirical approach than a scholarly one; Athough Hannah did try to bring more a scholarly side to it I'm addition to the satire. Iirc they did mention this in at least one of their first readings.

      @@whatwecalllife7034 Yes, I kinda needed their jolt of blasphemy back then to rupture my fear of The Devil. Kinda like ripping off a bandage. I also lost touch before the Hugo/Hannah transition; was that for real or also satire? I think I got too busy to keep up with it all after starting their #QuranReloaded series. They had a surprising amount of scholarly knowledge alongside their barbed wit. It was a pretty intense time to deconstruct on TH-cam back then. Their "satire" hit me like trial by fire. Each of their episodes challenged my courage almost every time. I used to close the window, then open it back up and go back to where I left off. I used to rage with myself to keep going. What you demonstrate with data in this video is just what so many people instinctively realize once they start really reading the Bible. This is ultimate truth from the Creator of the Universe?! I also think it's why there is such a gap between what believers' confess ("The Bible is the word of God") and what they so often do (ignore/neglect the Bible). I did my own little data analysis of Jesus' message, hell/damnation/judgment passages vs. love/forgiveness. Roughly I found that the hell to love ratio was about 10 to one in Matthew, Mark and Luke. That is ten times as many verses have Jesus preaching hellfire versus love! John, of course, turns this on its head and the love to hell ratio I found to be about 3 to 2, what I call the extreme makeover of Jesus found in the last gospel.

    On the note of divorce, I think I read somewhere that divorce rate among conservative / evangelical christians in America are actually higher than the population-at-large. This is because they were forced to be married early (to prevent them from desiring to sin) and as a result have a less happy marriage. And this is just the statistic based on couples who are legally divorced, not ones who maintain toxic unhappy marriage.

    And one of the many reasons I cannot accept Jesus, is the fact that Adam and Eve did not exist. Without them, there was no Original Sin to be handed down to everyone. Without Original Sin there was no need for a Savior. Therefore the very idea Christianity is based on, falls on it's face.

    I did a similar breakdown back in high school - a simpler and comparatively less thorough one, but still. Even back then, when I was religious, I found my conclusions to be succinctly summarized by Carlin's Religion is BS bit (I did not count the Ice Capades as a demerit against God or the Bible back then, even though I probably should have).
    Even for just the Old Testament, I think Lewis Black put it best:
    "People forget that the Old Testament was written by the Jews. It's not their fault, 'cuz it's not their book. It was written back when my people were wondering the desert looking for sh^t. People just do not know what Jews are good at, and what we're good at is bullsh^tting. They came up with these rules and stories in order to distract themselves from the fact that they did not have air conditioning."
    With that, it is not difficult for me to extend it to the New Testament. My favorite contradiction in the NT is from Galatians:
    "Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he is deluding himself. Each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast with regard to himself alone, and not with regard to someone else; for each will bear his own load." (6: 2-5)
    Right there, it says that everyone has to bear someone else's burden, only to be almost immediately followed by saying that everyone can only bear their own burden - and the fact that it contradicts itself within just a few verses makes me smile a bit dementedly. There are other contradictions that invoke that kind of smile as well, but none of them are in that convenient little package like this one.
    And then there was how across pretty much all sects and denominations, about 95% of Job is ignored completely, as if they know that the book only portrays God as the most evil pr^ck ever, or how in Revelation, the only people truly spared from the suffering of the events portrayed and ultimately let into the new kingdom... are 144,000 dead Hebrews. I need to double-check when the idea of the Rapture first took hold, but it certainly came much later after the Bible was finalized, as if they knew that without it, Christianity would be viewed as nothing but an overly large dead-end death cult.

    i honestly can’t imagine how painful and scary it must have been to go through the process of no longer having this belief in god. i’ve always considered myself more agnostic/spiritual, so the idea of the bible being -as you said- more or less a piece of history with a few good and bad morals, it doesn’t scare me very much, as my identity is not intertwined with said book and morals. it scares me more how long people have been supportive of this book, manipulated it, and spread it from one person to another. it scares me because i have family that believe in god, in jesus, in heaven, etc. it makes me unsure of how to behave around them, which sucks because i’ve always struggled to feel grounded around my family in one way or another. with that, i appreciate how you are not only compassionate towards non-believers, but believers too. it’s like a hand to hold on the journey of breaking this belief down, and it’s reassuring. you’ve stated before “im not better than them, they’re not better than me, im not worse than them, they’re no worse than me,” and that really helps to keep are they forefront of my mind when i meet a believer; especially when i remember that it is only partially their fault for believing so firmly. your compassion is not false, or condescending either, which is also helpful. they’ve truly been lied to and misled. thank you for sharing your time, and your story! much love!

    Great video! According to Dr. Sara Wolkenfeld, Director of Education and Community Engagement for the Sefaria project, the Babylonian Talmud consists of 1,860,131 words and approximately 6,200 pages.
    Jews have literally been debating and reinterpreting the ins and outs of Jewish law, tradition, and scripture for thousands of years. This points to the fact that, like all religion, Judaism is simply a dynamic and evolving tradition shaped completely by human understanding and cultural contexts. The diverse perspectives reflect Judaism as a lived and interpretable folk religion, nothing more.

    In a review/walkthrough of the late atheist biblical scholar Dr. Hector Avalos' book 'Slavery, Abolitionism, and the Ethics of Biblical Scholarship' (which I would buy myself if it wasn't out of my destitute price range), we're introduced to a kind of hermeneutic often used by biblical apologists which Avalos calls 'representativism' - apologists will note rather unpleasant parts of the Bible, but insist it's not representative of the Bible's whole message. But how do we determine what's most representative of the Bible, and whether it even has a consistent message? A quantifying approach is one way, and I'm glad you've done it, because it can show, as clear as day what actually is representative of the Bible.
    If you're able to pick up books by Dr. Avalos, I hope you share your thoughts, because I'd be very interested to hear them.

      @@MindShift-Brandon The thing is, you can't use logic to be a believer. You can't use evidence. You need a much lower and more unreliable standard in order to believe. You just need faith in what ever religion you have. Then add to that, you are constanting being told that this faith is enough and to not ask questons.
      Faith is somehow elevated above logic, common sense and facts. They are led to believe they are doing great with this weird elevation of myth above reality. They are brainwashed to never question and are harrassed by fellow believers if they do question. It takes a strong minded person to push away from the b/s.

    A child runs from home into a forest, it either becomes wild (attacking their past) or creates society (forging a future). It's exciting to see minds explore reality with "what ifs" so it can entertain narratives. Just don't forget, eventually one must end their life wild, or domesticated. You look back on your life and realize you spent the whole thing attacking something, instead of creating something.

Perhaps you wish to nurture the souls who have been criticized and judged by being that same advocate towards their accusers? Its all about pressure, and the best way to administer it. The problem has and will always be: "why?". Preservation of life? Because its something we all deal with? vs other problems not many deal with so we bicker on what is more valuable? Forgive me for being all over the place here. We all have webs in our mind, who has the one that can catch the most flies? Is finding value off of others a good idea? If we can't even find it by ourselves? Why even care about the flies if the only goal is to build the web?

      you can attack something, defeat it, and by doing so you create a better world = a world without the bad, BAD something you defeated.
      And religi0n is a bad, BAD something. The brain cancer of mankind abused to scam the masses.
      oh, and work on your metaphors: wolves are wild and co-operative. sheep are domesticated and very dumb. Ebola is wild and brutal, dogs are domesticated and mankind's heroes. Good and bad on the wild AND on the domesticated side. Meaning that just a basic knowledge of nature ruins your metaphor.
