      +Mark Hamm Thanks man. Hey, I just took another friend of mine sheep hunting where I took you and managed another ram in the "eradicated" Mauna Kea. And a pretty good one at that.

    Your point on learning how to get close, I think is a paramount lesson for all hunters to learn, but particularly those who wish to hunt with recurve or longbow... then how to shoot it from the entanglements of cover... :D

    Have you ever shot the serv broadhead?

      @ryankohatsu8836  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. See review here : th-cam.com/video/JLN0JVitMqY/w-d-xo.html
      I like it for longer shots for deer or smaller sized game with my relatively shorter draw length.

    Nice! Vias or Verde 2.0 or do you think it doesn't matter? I have both and am going in August.

    • @ryankohatsu8836
      @ryankohatsu8836  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a Vias guy especially on deer. I do feel there is a bit of an advantage on high contrast open patterns like vias for deer. I've my own close experiences with both and comparing. Sheep? heck it seems like it doesn't matter what I use, they see it all equally easily haha! Mouflon have incredible eyesight.

    • @mxracer317
      @mxracer317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ryankohatsu8836 thank you. I have all vias stuff. Can you recommend a good outfitter on the island? I’d rather do a rifle hunt myself, but i have no clue about what land can be accessed as a public land hunter.

    • @ryankohatsu8836
      @ryankohatsu8836  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mxracer317 by far the #1 comment question I get. If I were you, and DIY is important, I'd contact Pulama Lanai and get a hold of game management department. Find a number off google as I don't have one. Lanai has the only DIY type axis hunting. Maui and Molokai are mostly private land. Also note, Lanai also has high dollar exclusive areas (that it seems popular media always leaves out). Not sure why our hunting community really loves embellishing the DIY in popular media when the truth is most on the media aren't. I would think hunters would be the last community to bs folks hahaha! I had a podcast episode giving as much information as I could on axis here but I chose to just do youtube instead. I'll get to a 100% no bs candid "What you should know" type axis video sometime.

    another awsome video Ryan! I'm from Big island and always wanted to go to Lanai or Molokai. Do u guide people when you go? or ur all friends? where do start to get these opportunities?

    • @ryankohatsu8836
      @ryankohatsu8836  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the State hunt prohibits guiding or any compensation of guiding throughout the State on State land. It's kind of a ridiculous law while I watch eco-tours with huge commercial setups get a pass.
      It's all friends of mine and I usually stay with friends out there. It is difficult to find logistics for stay and vehicle out there. However, there are local families that rent out homes and trucks on Lanai. It is a significant portion of local economy; just got to ask around.

    awesome hunt do you make a backpack out of the deer for pack out out or use the kuiu frame somehow? and is it a 3200

    • @ryankohatsu8836
      @ryankohatsu8836  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +808meesterbojangles during archery, I've done unskinned quarters on the load shelf of the 3000 or 3200. I check that with DOFAW before I leave though (making sure quartering is ok). I have never gone during rifle season where I think they're a bit more stringent on the packing out part either whole or halved. Personally, I think it is dangerous to pack out whole or halved given the physical abilities of most folks.
      The pack for this hunt was the Ultra 3000. I do have a Icon 3200 that I like slightly better for Hawaii stuff vs. mainland.

    • @lycheeznuts
      @lycheeznuts 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ryan Kohatsu solid ya i just picked up a 3200 it looks like a good pack. usually hunt the ironwoods and just drag out the deer for state hunt but wanted to go deeper this year and need something with more load capability thats why i was wondering. looks like it should work. never understood the packing out the whole deer thing seems dangerous especially if solo think im going to just quarter if lucky and hopefully warden will understand. thx for the insight
