  • Loong Fatt (龍發豆沙餅) is one of Singapore's oldest and most famous kopi tiam (coffee place) selling tau sar piah. The founder first opened his first shop in 1948. That is even before Singapore's independence!
It's my first time eating this pastry. Is it worth the hype? I traveled to Balestier to find out.

This shop sells out by 3pm every day. And certain times of the day like lunch time, there will be a super long queue. 10 years ago they sold like 50 cents each. Now it’s 80 cents. Still very reasonable. But most importantly they taste really good. Quality still consistent throughout the years.

In the beginning of your video as you passed the Chinese temple, there is another store called the House of Tau Sa Piah which also has a long history. The difference is that it is completely vegetarian. Vegetarians, vegans and Muslims can try this traditional green bean paste pastry from this store instead. The Loong Fatt is likely not vegetarian as they probably use pork lard in their dough. Other commenters please correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks 😊

Subway Niche, located @ 601Balestier Road, along the same row of shops as Loong Fatt, sells delicious Peranakan desserts. The selection, however, is small as the shop cum bakery bakes & distributes the desserts to their outlets. 603 Tau Sar Piah is another competitor that sells obviously, tau sar piah, and many traditional Chinese snacks, too. I love the chicken pies. The prices are quite expensive for its bit size but then, the filling is ok.

You should visit Bukit Batok! Or Bukit Gombak, Little Guilin, Ford Motor Factory, Bukit Batok Nature Reserves and find the memorial plaque.

While you're doing videos on Singapore heritage food in Balestier, I would suggest a trip to The Original Herbal Shop for their guilinggao. It's a fascinating place with friendly staff. They are located just opposite Boon Tong Kee.
