Your First High Key Portrait Session | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

  • What is a high-key portrait? Does it have to have a pure white background? Do the shadows need to be washed out? Can you keep a splash of color or must it have muted tones? The answer to all of the above is the same… It’s up to you.
    High key like its opposite style (low key) isn’t a set of rules and as photographer Gavin Hoey explains, there’s more than one way to achieve the look. But as a general guide, a high portrait will have a mostly light range of tones though out.
    Starting with the classic pure white background, Gavin shows you why getting it right is a two (or more) light setup. He then goes on to add some very simple styling in the form of white fabric over his model. That one prop helps to push the image even further toward the high key look with a light but detailed portrait.
    Next Gavin switches to a more challenging style of high key, one where he keeps detail in the highlights and opens up the shadows. Once again it’s a surprisingly simple two-light set-up that does the trick and as Gavin shows, it minimizes the need for Lightroom or Photoshop post-processing.

    If i work with a few speedlights, the 1/8 or the 1/16 references for the lights should work for me ??

    • @MariusVolden
      @MariusVolden 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely not, unless your speedlights got 200W/300W power :) Lets say your speedlights are 50W, then the 200W @ 1/4 would be 1/1 for the speedlight. So when he says 1/8, that would mean 1/2 for you and 1/16 would be 1/4 for you. But everything is depending on your speedlight power.
      Ad200pro:
      1/1 = 200W
      1/2 = 100W
      1/4 = 50W
      1/8 = 25W
      1/16 = 12.5W
      1/32 = 6.25W
      1/64 = 3.125W
      1/128 = 1.5625
      1/256 = 0.78125W
      But my best advice would be to meter your own light if you dont have a 200 or 300. Another thing is you can match his 200W with your 50W if you turn your ISO up to 800. Then the 50W will in theory work as a 200W, but then you might get ambient light aswell.
      Another factor that plays a huge role is distance; how far away your lights are. There's a lot in play, so when he says 1/8 and 1/16 its all relativly.

      You cannot use a hand-held incident flash meter to read H.S.S. It will not work because the strobe lights will flash many times, not just once. You can only use the hand-held incident flash meter to measure the light WITHOUT H.S.S. If you are using H.S.S. on your strobe lights, set your camera on T.T.L. mode.

    • @RickLincoln
      @RickLincoln 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Sekonic L-858D-U supports HSS. It's an expensive meter, but so far as I know, it is the only one to date (Spring 2022) that does HSS. As I look at it, the L-858 is a long term investment. It has both incident and spot metering, allows for profiling to individual cameras, visually displays dynamic range and also measures flash duration in both T.5 and T.1. If you're a video shooter it also has a wide range of video options as well. Many, myself included, view this as a lifetime meter.

      @GavinHoey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poojabakery8735 It depends on what you mean "supports". The L-308 doesn't have any radio transmitter built in so it doesn't "support" any flashes. And yet it works with every flash in its own basic way.

      @RickLincoln 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Sekonic L-858D-U with RT-GX module offers radio triggering for Godox and it offers high speed sync metering as well. It is pricey. That said, for basic functionality the L-308 will measure the flash output of any Godox (or other) flash when the meter is used in cordless flash mode and when the flash is not in HSS mode.
