They actually tested simultaneous operations of both runways before COVID. As per the news, staff are currently being trained for simultaneous operations of both runway.

I get to see the planes from my apartment balcony much closer when they use the secondary runway for takeoffs. I have question, are there specific dates of when they use the secondary runway or is it just random?

Hello Pranav. Thank you for watching. Yes, the secondary runway is used on Tuesday and Saturday in the afternoon when the main runway is closed for runway maintenance and inspection.

You can cover from the terrace of Trident hotel. Avl LAX does it from the top of TWA hotel. Secondary runway has to be expanded for wife body aircraft else Hyderabad and Bangalore will eat up Chennai's share of the traffic

Curious why is the secondary runway not being utilized fully? From what I've read and seen, with the extension of the bridge over the Adyar river, the secondary runway should be around 3,445m which is plenty to land heavy aircrafts right?

The runway length is sufficient for wide body. But the issue causing non operation of wide body aircraft is that there are obstructions on both ends of the runway during approach and landing. The secondary runway isn’t equipped with ILS due to space constraints. Also there is very minimal buffer zone at the end of runway 30 which is the GST end.
