  • Hello friends! Welcome to Sunbeam Fabric Art!
    Do you feel inundated with your scraps? I most certainly feel that way, and I'm way behind in using up my scraps. New projects are on hold while I clean out the scrap drawer. With a tiny sewing space, these scraps must GO. Help me tame the scrap monster !
    This video: • ♻️ v22.01a | Crazy Qui...
    CRAZY QUILT BLOCK, CRAZY FAST! is the basis for how I am processing my scraps today. I'm using 8.5" x 11" newsprint paper as a foundation for scrap piecing. I don't have a plan, other than moving out as many scraps as possible, into completed blocks that can be pieced together into a blanket or other project.
    I hope you enjoy this video, and let me know if you try my method to clear out the scraps!

      Thank you! We downsized in 2017, and I have a space about 40 square feet! So I really have no choice! I guess that is why I have so many scrap videos, because I have to clear them out so often.

    Your type of scrapping is my type of scrapping because I quilt it with all sorts of colors . I have loads of scraps but I doubt I would ever have enough fabrics for coordinating colors. I make scrappy quilts for project Linus, and I know the children are thrilled with whatever quilt I or anyone else make and have no clue they’re a scrappy quilt. I suspect it’s fun for them to see all the different fabrics in the quilt. Thank you for some new ideas.

    If you dampen the paper, wait a few seconds, it should help the stitches release the paper easier.

    Instead of newsprint I use The same type of paper that they offer you when you get to pick your own donut or bagel out of the display cabinet at the grocery store. I believe it’s called sandwich wrap paper but it is not wax paper. You can get it in two or three sizes and you can get 250 or 500 sheets in a box and I believe it’s still under $10. It’s easier to rip out but it does hold up to some “reverse stitching”. I’m still working out of two boxes that I have owned for at least 10 years! That’s a lot of paper. I would also use this if I was doing paper piecing and I would trace the xeroxed design onto several layers of this paper by just stitching on the lines. I Would use basting length stitching With no thread to do this. Then I did have to pencil the numbers in for the different areas to be stitched but it was a lot faster!

    Hello. I just started watching your videos a few minutes ago. Trouble sleeping. I started scrap sewing and now I’m hooked on watching videos. 😆. Can you tell me why you use the paper? I have been sewing for years and I have never seen or known about that except for when I was working with vinyl. And you are the first person I have seen to have the same machine as me. 😃. Great video. 🤗

    • @sunbeamfabricart
      @sunbeamfabricart  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's great to hear! ☀️ I've had my machine for a few years and it's great. ☀️The 2nd quilt I ever made was a foundation paper pieced "FPP" quilt. I learned to appreciate having a foundation. And I've since graduated to creating my own FPP designs. I like using a foundation for scraps because I have a defined area to know when to stop adding fabric. BUT the same things can be done without a foundation at all! Your choice! A foundation can be paper, thin muslin, and is also a similar concept as "Quilt as you Go". If you plan to use fancy decorative stitching don't use a paper foundation, rather, use fabric or interfacing foundation☀️. Have a wonderful day and SEW much fun!

    You can trim your seams as you go to reduce bulk (and weight) by folding your paper at the seam and cutting away the extra fabric from the sea allowance. Did you know that you can make an "After Quilt" out of your leftover scraps to be used in the back of your quilt? I have seen a few of the "After Quilts" on the back that I liked better than the quilt tops. I am working through a huge scrap collection right now. Not all of these scraps were made by me. Some of them were given to me; and, I have bought bags of scraps from consignment shops and Flea Markets (which has given me many more prints, colors, and shapes to work with). Your blocks are beautiful. My mother always said, "Scrap quilts are usually the prettiest."

    • @sunbeamfabricart
      @sunbeamfabricart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for your comment! Yes, sometimes I do trim the seams to reduce bulk! Especially on my foundation paper piecing FPP projects. Although I have seen VERY beautiful after quilts, I will probably never make one 😂. That’s just me. Thanks so much for watching!

    This is only my 4th video so I notice your wool mat is on your sewing table. Do you not use steam? Do you worry about warping your table. I am getting my very first sewing room and getting it set up. I wanted an area close to print but don’t want to ruin my table when I get it

    • @sunbeamfabricart
      @sunbeamfabricart  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh cool! Thanks for watching! I do NOT use steam in my iron or on my wool mat. My Arrow Sewing cabinet seems to handle the heat okay. I used to sew on an office table and it has some warps in it. I still keep that around for pinning my quilts! Sometimes I also get out my good old ironing board though, and make myself get up and move!

      @Sunbeam Fabric Art thanks for responding. I have been going back and forth on the steam, starch and the open close seams. Everyone is so different but when I have lots of seams I am finding open makes for flatter durface.
