  • This recipe for KFC coleslaw tastes just like KFC, except I think it's even better! Refrigerate overnight for full flavor!
    I discovered this recipe in about 2008 on a website run by Todd Wilbur. Since then this recipe has been copied many times but, according to Todd, it was his invention back in 1993!
    Todd Wilbur's 1993 KFC Coleslaw recipe: topsecretrecip...
    Todd Wilbur's TH-cam Channel: / toddwilburstopsecretre...
    INGREDIENTS
    The Veggies:
    8 cups of finely chopped cabbage (about 1 medium head of cabbage)
    1/2 cup finely chopped carrot (2 medium carrots/3/4 cup of baby carrots)
    2 tbsp minced onion
    The Dressing:
    1/2 cup mayonnaise
    1/3 cup sugar (I'm using Splenda)
    1/4 cup milk
    1/4 cup buttermilk
    2 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
    1 1/2 tbsp white vinegar
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/8 tsp black pepper
    This recipe seems a little dry at first but once you allow it to chill (especially overnight) it is nice and juicy and the flavors are full and balanced!
    Enjoy!

    Thank you for the video and for sharing this recipe! I made a close variation to it last night. I tried it this evening on a BBQ pulled pork sandwich. Amazing!! I made mine a little more keto-friendly by adding erythritol/monk fruit sweetener to taste, vice using sugar; and I used some Greek yogurt instead of milk and buttermilk. Everything else was the same. This is the best batch of coleslaw I've ever made. Thank you again for sharing the recipe! Take care and be safe! 😊💖🙏

      Hi Lisa…I’m SO pleased to hear about your minor alterations and terrific result!!! Great ideas. 😊 This is certainly perfect with/on a pulled pork sandwich. If you haven’t seen it already, may I recommend my Crockpot Pulled Pork recipe. It’s inexpensive if you want to feed a crowd, easy and delicious!!! This would also be great on my Pastrami Burger Bomb. Oh, Lisa…you’re making me hungry thinking about it! Enjoy!!!! - Deb

    Cole slaw is a traditional side dish for Midwestern fish fries. This recipe looks great!

      Hi Julie. A fish fry sounds amazing and this coleslaw would be perfect with it. What kind of fish do you like to fry and do you batter or bread your fish? You’ve got my mouth watering at the prospect! - Deb

      @@DebsKitchen I don't know what state you are in, but here, in Wisconsin, a Friday fish fry is very popular and perch is the most popular, but there are also Scandinavian fish boils that serve cod and potatoes with cole slaw and assorted sides, which is also traditional. Breading for perch or walleye can be either a corn meal-based or a batter-based one. I don't cook fish fry myself, just because the local restaurants and taverns do a much better job of it!

    The thing I like about KFC coleslaw is it’s more finely chopped than most!

    • @DebsKitchen
      @DebsKitchen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to my kitchen, Charles…I totally agree!!!! I’m not generally a big coleslaw fan for that very reason. Light use of a food processor so that you don’t chop the cabbage and other veggies so small that they become mush is what makes this recipe so quick to put together, rather than chopping it all by hand (which I used to do…and not make it very often 😉). And this is truly every bit as good as KFC. What would you serve it on the side with? - Deb

    Could you use apple cider vinegar ?

    • @DebsKitchen
      @DebsKitchen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s great to meet you, Priscilla…welcome to my kitchen! The answer to your question is “yes”!!! Just use the same amount of apple cider vinegar as the amount given for white vinegar in this recipe. The only difference you might notice is a slightly darker color to your coleslaw and perhaps a slightly mellower flavor. Go for it and I’d love to hear back how it turned out. Enjoy!!! - Deb

    I agree with your recipe except in Canada, KFC’s coleslaw has a bit of a peppery flavour that I copied with a 1/8 t horse radish POWDER, and used Miracle whip not mayo. Just FYI...

      Hi Joanna…it’s great to meet you! I love that you figured out your own copycat recipe. 😃 Do you know if I can use prepared horseradish rather than powdered and, if so, what the ratio would be? I’d love to give your Canadian version a try!!! - Deb

    This is not like KFC cole slaw. The dressing has mayo, carrots, onions, sugar, TERRAGON vinegar, salt, white pepper, and horseradish. I pretty sure it's the horseradish that gives the KFC cole slaw it's signature taste. I had a neighbor back in the 70"s who had three KFC's and who made the cole slaw. She would never divulge the recipe of course, but she did say it has something you would never think of. Southernrs as the Colonel used horseradish in cole slaw, northerners do not think of this. Well, try adding some horseradish to your cole slaw sometime, I think it just brightens up the flavor!

    • @DebsKitchen
      @DebsKitchen  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carol, welcome to my kitchen! You’re absolutely right, this is NOT KFC coleslaw- but it is a copycat recipe of KFC Coleslaw, which may or may not have all of the same ingredients as the original.
      Such is the nature of copycat recipes and why companies like KFC guard their recipes so carefully.
      IMO, this recipe (not mine btw) is a VERY good approximation of KFC coleslaw and honestly, I (and my family) like it better. Your suggestion about horseradish is interesting and I’ll have to give that a try!

      Amen, Brother Dean!!! I’m totally with you there! No doubt your portions were also larger and the quality far better than what they sell as fast food now. Notably reduced portion size and quality on top of out of control pricing makes fast food a nonstarter for me. It’s just not worth it!!
      Gotta admit, I’m a sucker for the slaw juice on fries, too! 😉 So glad you enjoyed it!!! - Deb
