The special thing about Morricone's music is the fact that it's a dramatic instrument in itself. The music stands completely on its own, that's why the emotions and pictures instantly come to your mind when you hear his songs. It's like the movie is *written to the music* drawing its dramaturgy from it. His scores are living organisms, breathing in and breathing out, taking time to develop and flowing like blood through the picture's veins. And very much like the hero entering the scene when he's needed the most, Morricone's music emerges exactly at the right moment.
It will be a sad day when Maestro Morricone dies, but I find solace in the thought that his essence will forever live on in his timeless music.

No wonder Tarantino keeps dipping into Morricone's past themes for his films. There is simply no beating his music. He is the greatest to ever grace the industry.

Fonda, the man that America could not accept as a villain. He played the part to perfection, as he did every other role he was given, even though he hated making this film. "Not enough dialog," he said. According to Fonda, he felt it did not test his acting abilities for all they were worth. No one, I mean no one, was more dedicated to his craft than Fonda.
This movie ran in France and number one for two straight years! Naturally, it flopped here in the land of inappropriate. All because Americans couldn't handle their favorite film star "playing the part" of a villian. Well, isn't that what an actor does????This soundtrack is just...I don't have the words. Morricone is a heavenly composer. His use of major to 6th to 7th chord arrangements just knocks my socks off. Tears come rolling every time I hear the main theme, and the main theme from "Once Upon a Time In America," which may well be the most remarkable movie theme ever produced. Without Morricone, there would be no Leone, and vice-versa.

The fact it represents both the villain and the protagonist: This plays when Frank murders the Macbain family and again when Harmonica is in the saloon. Then finally during their duel and we see Frank gifts Harmonica the instrument to play while his brother dies. The greatest movie theme of all time.

The piece convey the film's character perfectly in how it makes you feel. When I hear this song, I feel drunk with sorrow and rage. If I were walking, I'd almost stumble forward, swaying as the harmonica's pitch does, yet intent on the direction to which I stumble... never forgetting... never forgiving. The hot wind blows, the dust gathers, but the goal will be reached. And when I get there, someone is going to die.

Morricone is expressing that even hopeless situations can end up being reversed, they are not always impossible if you can survive long enough.
Time changes the variables, so hold on and strike when that happens.
Have the courage to keep going even when life is playing an evil song on the harmonica.

Watched this movie just randomly once when it was on TV. I have watched the Dollars, I have watched Trinity series, and still, to this day, Once Upon A Time in the West is my favorite Western. The build up, the tension, the characters, and of course, the music.
And the scene burned into my mind, is the finale. The final duel. The entire movie builds up to it, slowly, like it slowly builds up it's tension in various scenes, until the reveal, and duel

At first I thought of this as Harmonica's (the man played by Charles Bronson) theme, but when I heard it first introduced during Frank's murder of the McBain family (right before Frank shot the McBain family's youngest, terrified little boy), I associated the theme more closely with the harmonica itself and less with a man. A subtle twist to associate the theme with both of the only two people ever to possess the harmonica, Frank and Bronson's unnamed character. Kinda brings out the dark, cruel history of death associated with the harmonica, particularly of Frank's penchant for cruelty to and killing of innocent children. Also fits the flashbacks of both characters during the final duel and the scene of Frank's dying. First as the Harmonica Man and Frank remember the harmonica falling out of Harmonica Boy's mouth, then as the harmonica falls out of Frank's mouth. The harmonica itself plays about as important a role in the movie's plot as do its two possessors, and the harmonica's theme brings that out. BRILLIANT!

The harmonica melody which lingers on throughout the piece is brilliant. For me, it represents a memory, from which feelings spring out of. Even though the feelings progress, from ones own fear, to realization of the reality, the memory keeps lurking in the background. The harmonica lingers on into the last second, and by 3:10, comes the bell that finally puts an end to it all, a decision, sort of.
Just a brilliant masterpiece in movie history.
