Commando was almost a parody by Schwarzenegger of all of his work. The body count was over the top at the end. Your father was indeed a very smart man!!!
I love the way Leone used faces in his films . Faces with character, pathos, pain and the weight of the world in them. He lingers over them, he loves them... And never better than in this movie which is just an epic masterpiece on every level. The score, the cinematography, the casting, the locations, the sets... what a film! Magnificent.
My vote for best use of a harmonica in a film score ever, so heartbreaking and haunting when you find out the context for it. An absolute perfect match of film and score, one for the ages. Clint Eastwood was asked to play Bronson's role, but bowed out to do Where Eagles Dare. I have no reason to complain about Bronson's performance. Henry Fonda kills it as one of the most compelling to watch sadists in film history. A long movie, but worth every moment you spend with it.
I'm 71 years of age so I've seen a lot of films in my time. I would guess at some 5 a week so 250 a year for say the past 50 years say 12,500. Including some great Oscar Winning movies. But Once upon a time in the West is by far the greatest film ever made. A work of art on every level.
People will often say "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is the quintessential Western and the best of its genre (all Westerns, not just spaghetti). And it is certainly a great film. The score (What does one think of, hearing the opening of the film's theme song?), the scenery, the cinematography... Eastwood was iconic, Lee Van Cleef was palpably evil, and Eli Wallach was a scene stealer. Within context the film was perfect. Leone retired from Westerns after The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. And what a note to go out on. But fortunately retirement is not permanent, because... well, it was as in Once Upon a Time in the West, Leone had refined the Western. Bronson coolly takes on Eastwood's role, and Henry Fonda... well, that story is nothing short of legendary. And, of course, the maestro, Ennio Morricone... what else can be said. One of my top two films of all time.
It is a perfect, John! I still see and love so many movies from all eras, including some few for the present last years but this one is really the one!
This is one of those soundtracks that puts you INTO the scene. You are almost LIVING it. You can see and FEEL what each one is feeling, hearing Charles play. OOO. Just got chills!!!!
Truly the one of the greatest endings to a movie. To create a genuine shock having been hardened through years of people pushing the boundary of cinema is a masterful achievement. Bronson, Fonda, Leone, Morricone- genius.
The atmospheric in this movie is breathtakingly realistic. And still it makes the hero vs the villain story complete. And Ennio Morricone is as great as always to make the music to match up to it. Loved this movie to the greatest detail. Movies like this never dies.
This is my all time favorite Western. So few words, so much said. Watched it over an over. I seemed to pick up more each time I watched. Once viewed it with family at Christmas. None had seen. I told them. U have to pay attention. I would explain certain parts. They finally got into it. Mesmerized. Said what a great movie afterwards. It is a masterpiece. The looks, the gestures, the music. A classic.
This music brings back so many memories of my childhood. When all was hustle and bustle throughout the day, a western always brought the family around the television set. Bronson, Van Cleef, Eastwood, and John Wayne.
Such an haunting tune , since Charles Branson, Peter fonda , Jason Robert are not here any more . And yet I still listen and watch there movies . As long as great stuff like this shows there memory will always be alive
Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, and Jason Robards. But yes, absolutely. And this is one of his very best scores. What a gift he is to both music and film.

So Leone had the soundtrack played while they were filming , fantastic, no wonder it works so well . Morricone , he stands alone , he really captured the feeling of the west : stark, desperate
they had to get fonda because he played the good guy in everything, the impact of him on screen as a bad guy was far too impressive, it had to be him and we are all so glad!
Henry Fonda also played a bad guy in the Western Firecreek in 1968 which was his first time playing a bad guy and Once A Upon A Time In The West was released after. In Firecreek Fonda plays the villain who goes against James Stewart who was his close friend in real life.
The haunting harmonica theme is based on the sound it made as the boy labored to breathe through it while holding up his brother. That....that's pretty dark. And perfect for the final confrontation.
The actor was Claudio Mancini, who I think was the producer of the movie. He was also producer for other Leone movies including his doomed (due to the production company) masterpiece Once upon a time in America.

The harmonica was used as a part of the plot. To find out who the protagonist is as portrayed in the story. As a puzzle/disttaction to keep the other characters, as well as the viewers, guessing. And, with a mysterious but rivetting tune, as part of the soundtrack. I like it!
It is a singular melody, the fruit of a brilliant mind - harmonica, guitar, orchestra and choir united in a wealth of feelings. A fantastic, universal music such as Mozart, Beethoven, etc.

To me the harmonica shared just as much stardom as the actors in this movie , from the hauntingly unforgettable melody of the soundtrack , to the end of the movie , when Henry Fonda remembers on his last breath who Charles Bronson really is. This is how I KEEP MY LOVING BROTHER HAPPY !
3:28 The build up, then the big pay off. I loved when they used that part in the movie Rango, with Rango and Rattlesnake Jake's stand off. A true homage to the classics
The ever tormenting yet eerie melody of the harmonica beckoning Frank's mesmerizing ice cold blue eyes into a ill-wished finale! Masterfully done says I.
Damn. I love this movie so much, outstanding performances by all. Still gives me goosebumps when I hear this. I don't know how.. But Morricone manages to not only portray the dark, haunted past of our protagonist but also the lust vengeance that burns within him. Well, that's what I hear when I listen to this.
This still gives me goosebumps. This was made 4 years before I was born but it's still a piece of art (even recognized as such in 2009 by the Library of Congress). Deserves to be preserved forever and everyone should watch this at least once in his life.
Leone & morricone combined to gave us all some of the greatest movies of all time.A lot of men wanted to be like man with no name or man with the harmonica those days even with their unshaved face and dirty looking clothes because they were more macho and cool than james bond. The facial expression's in these movies tells thousands of words and morricone's music goes perfectly well with it.They are both genius and so does the actors from eastwood, bronson, van cleef, fonda and wallach.

In almost every western directed by the late great Italian film maker Sergio Leone. The anti-hero has no name. The great Clint Eastwood character in Sergio Leones Trifecta was called " The Man With No Name." And Charles Bronson character in "Once Upon A Time In The West." He was known only as " The Man With A Harmonica" or Harmonica. And even Terrence Hill's character in "My Name Is Nobody" had no name. This was brilliance at it's best. And as for this theme " Man With A Harmonica" by the one and only Greatest Maestro in all of cinema...Ennio Morricone. Is Awesome! He wrote 3 of the greatest music themes in just this one film alone. It helped to make " Once Upon a Time in the West" the greatest western in all of cinema. Priceless!
Well, the "Man With No Name" is actually three separate characters. The man from Fistfull is Joe, the man from A Few Dollars More was Manco and the man from Good, Bad and the Ugly is Blondie.
Jarek07 Actually, due to legal stuff they had to make the main character in For a Few Dollars more a separate character, they just happened to re-use actors and costumes from the previous movie. Also, note that they also act different. Manco never uses his right arm unless he is using his gun and wears a gauntlet on his right wrist. He is also a lot more rude than Joe. With The Good, the Bad and the Ugly however, this isn't totally confirmed but it is widely accepted that Blondie is also a separate character. The movie also takes place in approx. 1863 or 1864 and the first two movies take place from 1873 and onwards. Though official dates haven't been confirmed for the first two, if Clint was the same character then he'd be in his sixties in Fistful and Few Dollars More. Also, the "Man with No Name" was just a marketing ploy used to advertise the movies in the US.
A great story is Leone wanted the three of the Good the Bad and the Ugly killed of at the train station but Clint was not going for it would that be cool if they where killed of

leone was a fan of bronson aswell after seeing him in the dirty dozen
Midnight Cowboy's theme is gold too

He wrote 3 of the greatest music themes in just this one film alone. It helped to make " Once Upon a Time in the West" the greatest western in all of cinema. Priceless!
Well, the "Man With No Name" is actually three separate characters. The man from Fistfull is Joe, the man from A Few Dollars More was Manco and the man from Good, Bad and the Ugly is Blondie.
pyrotech8285 Those are mostly titles you hear the say "They call him" most of the time.. Doesn't mean its his name..
Parabéns pelo texto.
A great story is Leone wanted the three of the Good the Bad and the Ugly killed of at the train station but Clint was not going for it would that be cool if they where killed of
