  • First glimpses of the new baby Orangutan at Blackpool Zoo
    The first orangutan baby to be born at the zoo in 20 years
    The newborn baby is a critically endangered bornean orangutan born to first time Orangutan mother Jingga
    TH-cam sensation Jingga has had social media fame before when a video featuring her went viral back in 2015 - viral video - monkey sees a magic trick
    The video was filmed of her in her previous home Barcelona Zoo in Spain
    Jingga move to her new home Blackpool Zoo in 2017 to join her new Blackpool Orangutan family as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)
    14 year old Jingga was born in Barcelona in 2009 to mother Jawi and Father Karl
    Now Jingga is settled at Blackpool zoo and has given birth for the first time to the tiny baby boy orangutan which has yet to be named
    The father of the newborn baby orangutan is 13 year old Kawan who has recently moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands and was an instant hit with the resident female orangutans Cherie Summer and Jingga
    He came to the zoo as part of the European Endangered Species program after his much loved predecessor Ramon was moved to a new group in Germany where he has just become a new father himself
    Kawan was specially selected by experts to join the female group at Blackpool Zoo and has settled into his new role as alpha male orangutan very well
    We have recently added Blackpool Zoo to our list of zoos that we will be frequently visiting to film the apes, so watch out for more footage of this fantastic zoo. Blackpool has Gorillas and Bornean Orangutans and we were really impressed with both areas.
    There are currently 5 Bornean Orangutans in one family group at Blackpool Zoo consisting of adult females Cherie Summer and Jingga
    Alpha Male Kawan and the new male baby orangutan

      I couldn’t see what she was doing wrong except she is a bit rough around the edges. She was observant to the little one. As she was eating. But he wasn’t crying so she must be feeding him as he was quiet and alert like he should be. He didn’t look malnourished at all as he was moving around.

      Definitely keep an eye out for them …… there is no way the mum should be putting her baby down at that age …. She should be tightly attached to mum at ALL times that stage ….. who knows though living in captivity for so long she may have worked out there are no threats in the enclosure so feels comfortable knowing the baby is safe…. But it’s still most unusual for the mum to let go and the baby not to panic and scream/cry or protest at no contact with mum 🤷‍♀️🙄 not at all normal behaviour for an Orangutan 🦧

      She is very inexperienced as a mom however it's clear she loves the baby. Orangutan can be taught. I saw a doc on an inexperienced mom who was shown how to breastfeed her baby by a human mom and it worked! She only needs to carry her properly. Easy peasy

      I'm in total awe of their human like behavior. Of course I always am but they never cease to amaze me by upping the ante every time. Other than I thought she was rougher than other moms and usually for at least the first few weeks they keep them close to their chest so baby can nurse whenever it wants or riding on her back by her neck for a little while. Anyway, back to the awe part. She rubs and pats its back. That's just sweeter than candy to me!! That's an act of affection and love. The other day I saw one that when it got fussy she gently shook and rocked it side to side. We've got all these idiots out here saying they're dumb and nasty animals. One called them vermin. I just don't see much more intelligence between that person and the orang LOL BRW the title mentioned something about Magic. She especially said it when she put it in between the celery stalks. Where did I miss the magic??🤷😊

    Has the baby nursed? I hate to be negative, and I’ve only seen this clip, but unless the mother does a 180 and starts holding the baby close to her and allowing it to suckle- they will end up needing to find a surrogate or the least favorable option human intervention 😢. Animals in the zoo, more and more often reject their offspring, because raised in an unnatural environment, they lose their natural behavior, which is very sad. If Jingga (sp) was going to reject her baby she would have already done so. She's just an inexperience first time mom...just as some humans are. Tayari was a very inexperienced first time mom (borderline abusive and neglectful) at Taipei Zoo with Jabali and he's now a thriving and healthy gorilla 3 y/o...without human intervention, which is a last resort for zoos. And she's become a very good mom over time. It's hard for humans to view primates without holding them to our standards. And all of us viewers are only shown short video clips into their day. Give this first time mom a chance to grow into her new "mommy" status. If human intervention is needed, the zoo staff will step in and assist.

    • @ApeTracker1
      @ApeTracker1  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yep we totally agree, it is hard for us to look at things without comparing them to how humans do things and as you say she is a first time inexperienced mum. We don't have much knowledge of Barcelona Zoo from where she came, so she may never have even see another Orangutan baby before. Thanks for the great informative post, we really appreciate it Meg. 🥰

    • @MilkyWhite1
      @MilkyWhite1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Our girl Tayari was certainly something. Without anthropomorphizing them, I still think there are a range of very good and very bad mothers in the ape community and on a scale of 0 to 10, orangutan Jazz is about a 10, gorilla Tayari was about a 2. If she were a human, her son would probably be calling his grandma "mom". 😂
      I mean, she nearly jumped directly on him multiple times in a row and didn't like feeding him, but she gets a 2 for not out right rejecting him. Hopefully Jingga is not neglectful and will get a hang of it sooner or later.

      I'm watching the second video with this mother and her new baby and so far I'm not convinced by her motherhood! She doesn't even know what to do with this child, the orangutan would never put the child on the ground, because there is no such possibility on the tree, she should hold it tightly and not leave it even for a moment. @@tardismole I believe less and less in super good zoo staff, recently a gorilla was born at the Columbus zoo and the staff was shocked because for 8 years they thought the gorilla was a male? how carers do not know for 8 years whether they have a male or female, and the best thing is that there is only her father and her brother on the catwalk and one of them is the father of the child! So if in this case, the guardians also see nothing wrong with the mother's behavior towards this poor child, what to think? Mother wouldn't let go of such a tiny orangutan for a moment!

    I’ve watched a lot of mother and newborn orangutans but never one like this. It doesn’t look like mom is bonding with her baby. I know that for some reason orangutan mothers occasionally reject their babies and humans step in and will try to find a surrogate mom and caretakers will bottle feed. I fear for this helpless welfare.

    What kind of zoo is this? They should have known that this orangutan mom had zero experience as a mother. They had plenty of time to work with this orang BEFORE THE BIRTH OF HER BABY. They could have shown her films of other orang moms and their babies. Also one of the female primate care staff can teach the mom what should be done. Reputable zoos work with each other to help ensure proper care. The option to let a knowledgeable human take over care can be done in order to save the baby rather than letting the baby and the mom suffer. The mom stands little chance of doing the right things if she has not been taught.
    These are all actions that have been done and documented by accredited zoos.

      @@ApeTracker1 I really appreciate your actual reading my lengthy comment and your thoughtful reply!
      I had been getting short and long videos about primates/apes and monkeys that were clearly filmed by people who didn't have any idea about what they should be doing or any desire to learn about how to care for these extremely intelligent and complicated animals. They were just being raised as money sources - number of likes, subscribers, comments. My heart was absolutely broken as basically the animals lived in trash, were being fed junk when and if they were fed, and God knows what they suffered if the video was not generating enough $$$.
      Thank you for promising to be more knowledgeable about the care, feeding, and fate of these lovely creatures of God.
      Knowledgeable zoo and sanctuary properties and personnel are so important to their survival. Before I was disabled I had the opportunity to visit and/or investigate some. It was an eye opening experience to find out that it takes a LOT of money to keep these properties going. If humans don't care, gorillas, chimps, orangutans, and many, MANY others will perish and disappear from the earth. Life here is interactive. Gorillas cannot survive if they don't have the correct climate, the correct food sources, and the space to feed and raise their families. Animals cannot purchase land, they cannot farm the food sources, they cannot protect themselves from poachers who shoot them to cut off their hands to sell them as "interesting home decorations".
      It's a tough job to be knowledgeable. It's an even tougher job to be active "carers".
      But, there is no better feeling than to experience the satisfaction of helping those who cannot make it without us. You will feel the thanks that they will give.
