I read V. E. Schwab based on you stating that this was one of your fave authors and ended up reading and really enjoying the darker side of magic trilogy and the vicious duology. I also picked up The Master of Djinn and I couldn't put it down! I have been telling my friends about that book and I dont know why more people havent heard of it. Btw I love your outro and your guitar intro!
I enjoyed this book although it was nothing like what I was expecting. I had thought I would get more plot, but it felt like 90% character focused until the last minute. Thankfully, I found all the characters intriguing so I stayed interested and will continue the series
9:05 I think there's a degree of ego that goes into someone feeling entitled to write whatever they want. Like you said, writing about different people is fine, but when you pretend to know better than the very people you're writing about, that's when you have a problem. And a lot of people who do that take it as a personal attack and go "well why can't i?" Cuz they think you're forbidding them from having freedom or something. Like I think they'd need to ask themselves why they even want to do that, or think they need to do that.
I had the same problem, identifying the MC's race, with Priory of the Orange Tree. I figured out the Japanese analog group easily, but the fact that everyone around the MC was white and they were coded as working class/ religious devotee which lead to her being an outside, I didn't figure out she was supposed to be SE Asian until 2/3 through the book. It was giving paint bucket diversity vibes.
I'm curious but very hesitant to read any of her books again as I've read Dowry of Blood and Hated it with every fiber of my being (except the atmosphere). The only thing that pushed me through it was hoping Van Helsing would appear and kill all the vampires.
"Dinner smells great, by the way" ABSOLUTELY jumpscared me as I was, of course, making dinner. You got me good 😂
YES! Got somebody 😂 hope dinner was good ☮️
You say don’t fret, but there is clearly a fretboard on your guitar. I’m seeing some inconsistencies in your lore my guy
Fun fact: my old teacher would make that joke a lot and that’s where I got my name for the channel
Would not complain if you started every single video with a little song snippet
It would kinda hurtful if you did complain

That’s how I felt too! Thought I was in for a scary, gripping plot but I enjoyed the characters!

Really excited to read this book now I've heard you talk about it. It was on my to read list but it's gotten bumped up now.

The only reason I knew the MC was meant to be SE Asian coded was because I was told. It’s an alright book but it is very vanilla.
Here for the songs

I’ve never read Dowry of Blood so I can’t tell you if it’s different enough. Sorry to hear it was such an unpleasant reading experience.
@dontfretreadbooks it's okay lol love your channel
Yes, another musical intro! Also, I thought I had subscribed??? Weird!
Be careful or you'll have to give us musical intros all the time!
Contemporary/urban fantasy isn't really my thing but this seems kinda neat.
I dunno about ALL the time. We’ll see.
Same I’m not into urban but this sounds good
