Palmer was superb in games 2 and 3 then ran out of gas (he retired not long after). I love his technique on the backhand side lifting topspins then taking volleys off the side wall. Class.

It’s great to see these matches, especially when you can see the ball. This must be shortly before Palmer retired. I was fortunate to get to see him play live. One area where the reffing has improved is they used to give lets for anything, whereas now a lot of these would be no lets, which makes for better viewing.

Just Love Palmers technique its so pleasing watching him play. Hes so strong and has such a clear perception of THE game really textbook play but struggling a Little with his heavy frame in the long run.

I also love David Palmer's game, mainly for his mental strength and for his solid technique. Watch some of his 2003-2008 matches, he had some great classic battles with Nicol, Power, Shabana, Willstrop, Beachill and Lincou. Those were the days!

I think it was 2010 Canary Wharf when James and Nick played that marathon semi-final. It broke my heart to see James cramping on the floor in the 5th.

Fascinating how the game has changed since. Greater expectation on players to maker more effort to get to and play the ball means so many of the Lets that David has asked for would be NL today.

Quality match! Fantastic effort from David Palmer but he ran out of gas at the end. Gautier's supreme mobility got him over the line.

Agreed, by 2010 Palmer was maybe past his prime while Gaultier was peaking...still, given Palmer's ability to win matches from 2-0 down, you know he will never give up.

That was an entertaining match. I couldn’t help but crack up some of the times Gaultier smashed the tin when he had an easily winning shot. Not hitting the tin so much is something Gaultier really improved upon later in his career. The refereeing was pretty poor. Far too many lets. Didn’t set the right tone to make the players clear, which should be done from the beginning of the match. Just give a warning and stroke if necessary, and they’ll clear like rabbits.
