The only person who knows what this song is truly about is the one who wrote it. Also, don't berate someone for interpreting it differently. True artists leave their art open to interpretation; that is what makes art art!

We create our own realities. If a baby boomer just hears "stupid noise that isn't as good as The Beatles" then in their reality that's what the song is about. If you follow the breadcrumbs plenty of us know this song is about how the Ego has corrupted and ruined our world. Namaste

The music alternates between the war-time rabble and the smooth lullaby you'd sing to a baby, but with an uncomfortable creepy vibe to it. How anyone could overlook this track is beyond me.

Hey, I don't have time to watch, so here are the lyrics:
Don't fret precious I'm here, step away from the window
    Go back to sleep
    Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
    Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums
Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble
    Head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums
Pay no mind what other voices say
They don't care about you, like I do, like I do
Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils,
See, they don't give a fuck about you, like I do.
Just stay with me, safe and ignorant,
    Go back to sleep
    Go back to sleep
    Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
    Count the bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums
Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble
Head down, go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums
I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and all your demons
I'll be the one to protect you from
A will to survive and a voice of reason
I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and your choices son
    They're one in the same
    I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself
Swayin to the rhythm of the new world order and
Count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums
    The boogeymen are coming
    The boogeymen are coming
Keep your head down, go to sleep, to the rhythm of a war drums
    Stay with me
    Safe and ignorant
    Just stay with me
Hold you and protect you from the other ones

The song is actually about the mainstream media.
they continue to lie and perpetuate war that we believe is justifiable when it's really for money and power.
The media has many people believing the atrocities that the American government has perpetuated around the world, we're in good faith when it could not be further from the truth. While our government willingly sacrifices untold amount of soldiers lives in the name of wealth and greed.

I know damn well about all the interpretations (addiction, government, everything in between), I’m not stupid, but still I used to sing this to my cat Todd while I held and swayed him around. I sang it out of love. He would purr so damn loud and drape himself over my shoulders. He was such a sweet, clingy mama’s boy. I did everything to keep him happy and ignorant of how bad the outside world is. All of my cats are rescues, so they’d already had a taste of suffering, sadly.
Closing in on two years since he passed, first time listening to this since then. I could save him from everything else, except his own body. I missed this song, but it fucking hurts.

🤘🏿ULTRAMEGAROLOTA🤘🏿 04/01/2021

I interpret these lyrics as humanity is kept in the dark regarding global affairs and agendas, overwhelmed with distractions meant to direct our attention away from the powers at be's business. Caught up in a relentless routine we are forced to uphold while earths people are being slaughtered to claim real estate on a planet meant for all of us to enjoy. Its a bitter pill to swallow but its reality. And sometimes it seems ignoring the obvious is the only way to paint a better picture of how humanity should be ideally . Saving us from ourselves is stopping the unnecessary killing of our own. Its been going on since records were first recorded. Humanities legacy is being written by corrupt powers giving a disgraceful name to us as a whole.

Or, Maynard is well versed in the occult and sings of these things like any other cryptic new age artist. This in regard to one of his songs where you hear his lyrics repeating ''as above, so below'', and that not being the only example. It might well be one of the accompanying songs of a transition into what you describe. Ever since it stopped being ''mankind'', whose flaws and imperfections were admitted and lamented, and instead became ''humanity'' (what is a HU-man anyway?), where there's suddenly the belief that hu-mans are something so noble and virtuous that they can be proud of themselves, because they can instantly change current manure into pure bliss of a future. Well, if that were true, why don't we see this evolved sensibility manifested more often? There was enough time, so why do we keep sliding lower? The daily news are nothing like the brave new world story that's being peddled to us. An answer to that would be that we never rose from our corrupted state of being. But then again, those who think they're in the know say that we always need conflict in order to advance as a species. Which is rubbish, but that's what keeps getting played on the planetary chessboard. All so there's a readymade excuse when there's more devastating wars that happen worldwide.

Its sad how a good portion of the masses so readily follow suite and disregard their surroundings. I think our decline as a species is due to multiple things. Lowered curriculum in schools is the base for playing right into the systems hand. Dumbing a bunch of us down to eventually be the ultimate future work force doing the dirty work while corporations pile their riches. Things like fluoride in the water is known to callous the brains pineal gland "The minds eye" without it we lose our ability to dream, intern leaving us more prone to being led in a false direction with little to no questioning. While the powers at be strip our planet of resources, leaving death and misery in their wake staying ready and willing to sacrifice their own people to attain the power that comes with controlling it. Honestly, using fossil fuels as our main source of energy is retarded to me. The dawn of the industrial revolution is where oil tycoons let greed take over, the decision was made to use oil for everything knowing it would eventually run dry but not in their lifetime so earth and its peoples longevity was ignored. Current society is a carefully calculated system aimed toward pushing us into a world where what they provide is a falsely represented necessity. Like in the song "The humbling river" by puscifer "It'll take a lot more than words and guns, A whole lot more than riches and muscle, the hands of the many must join as one, and together we'll cross the river" In the last 100 years we have witnessed an unbelievable amount of progress in technology and industry, sending our planet into a downward spiral and taking it for granted instead of being responsible beings of this world we choose the path of self destruction just as those b4 us did. When will we break this cycle?

      @alexrideout2348 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Your right in what you say brother. The powers at be are working behind the scenes to completely consolidate their power. The so sad thing about our people is that they can't or won't see that the U.S. has simply become the military arm of the super rich. Most of the conflicts we enter into now is because theirs something worth Billions there that the Elite want. The wars today are an Oil Grab. We are not threatened by Iraq or Afghanistan, and they are trying so hard to bait Iran. This is a move through the middle east and they will decide soon enough that they have enough power and will work for the World Government. One of the reasons the Fed is complicit in destroying our world financially, is that they know that if they destroy our currency their will be mass panic. When that happens, the powers that be will hit the airwaves which they control 96 percent of and tell us of the Marvelous new plan of a one world currency so this never happens again.... yeah right. Unless we wake up and begin to challenge them the status quo will never change. We need to be OUT of any other warzone and worry about us. If we fed and clothed our hungry and destitute and built s strong infrastructure, I mean heck they could pay all the out of work people (assuming 30 M) 50k a year to build up and strengthen the infrastructure and that would only be 1.5 trillion. Shut down that war and you got it. Until people say ENOUGH of this bs, lets worry about us, this nation, which could be the greatest will continue down the tubes. Im aware that's simplistic, there are several other problem areas, but that one is so big and easy to solve.
We have been fed lies for years. The values that we hold today are false, fed to us since your old enough to watch t.v. It was figured out long ago, if you repeat something enough, people will begin to believe. The movie the Matrix was no joke, and on a subconscious level I truly believe its why it was so popular. We are in a world created for us by the few SUPER-Rich who figured out long ago, that it does NOT matter who is in charge of a country as long as they control the money. Our Fed is a prime example. I mean how the hell does a nation like ours allow the illegal creation of a privately owned institution that prints our money. They pay themselves the interest on all that money and all your tax dollars go to fund this crap. The Fed is at least 1/3 held by non-americans. Check out what Lincoln and Jefferson said about the Foreign Banking interests, the people in true power. With regards to the false values, we are taught CONSUME, consume, consume. While you might feel good for a day or so that you have the coolest phone ever, does that really make you happy? Things don't make people happy. Its living in harmony with the world and being with and taking care of and spending time with those you love. Not this narcissistic, all that matters is me. What civilization wouldn't be brought to its knees with several million people care nothing for their fellow man, watch out only for number 1, and believe happiness is how much you make and what toys you can buy. Civilizations of people only survive when the people work together for the betterment of all and take care of one another. Unfortunately we are caught in some very powerful and smart peoples wen and it can be an endless whole of crap. However deep in my heart I hope maybe someday soon, people will begin to see.
BTW meant to say totally agree that's what they are singing about and may have been influenced just a bit by the late great Bill Hicks. He saw the world for what it was and was good friends with Tool and Maynard and Billy knew him pretty well. God Bless to all, love your family, neighbors, and the world. If you know what's going on, try to enlighten as many as you can gently. After all, the worst thing for them would be a united people that won't let the game be played on us anymore.

jack blankenship Grand web of awesome, sounds like another empty promise to get caught on. The real eye opener would be if people realized that the motives behind the grand scheme are different from those the public perceives. People in power don't play monopoly-type table games like we understand. To them, tanks, guns, money and political machinations are just means to an end. Something that is being used to frighten people into submission. Fear of losing own life, fear of losing property, acceptance of society and similar. It can be seen clearly throughout the published works of the so-called philosophers that are also present behind this globalist madness (though real study is not necessary because the folly of their thinking can be seen thru very early on): theirs is a spiritual agenda. Alex mentioned Bill Hicks, well Bill was conveying a spiritual message- awareness, uplift, doing away with the trivial and embracing genuine enlightenment, enabling a person to see the unadulterated truth instead of a convoluted substitute. Fear is being used against us, and is also a spiritual notion. Failing to realize there's a level above what they perceive is what's keeping the people from effecting the desired true change, and keeping them trapped in a circle of trying to re-use the same things that are being used against them, when all the while those are not the things that can achieve change. Mao said that power grows out the barrel of a gun, well he conveniently concealed that in reality it's the hand that holds that gun and its trigger that has the power. But people don't seem to realize that even today and so they do as they're conditioned to. Volunteers to the army, who think that their seemingly patriotic, but in truth misguided service will change anything, are an example. You can't shout in a fight and expect the other person to calm down. No, what it takes is the recognition that perhaps it's not even in our power to change something we didn't create and don't even fully understand. Those of us that believe in God are confronted with this possibility and shaken from the romantic notion that ''if we just step together, it'll somehow all be fine, in time it will all go away''. Well, history teaches on numerous accounts that distress might bring people together, but it is not for long. There's too many differences that prevent this after a while, if all one counts on are the loose and shaky foundations of the nature of man in peril. And it is this nature which will shine thru in all its weakness, double milling stone around our necks- hate and pride. Then, only God which is Christ can help offset it with everlasting respect and humility. Since he is the one struggling and not us, it can be no other way. We're here as agents that do our assigned duties, but we do not adjudicate in the end. Otherwise, somewhere, at some point in time, our struggle would have been over completely. Hope the message gets to you on the level it's intended, but like I wrote; in the end it's not up to me, nor does it matter that much.

What I honestly think about the lyrics: a mother/father protecting his son by a night (sleep time for kid) land assault from enemy soldiers (the boogiemen) and trying to make their child to go sleep, ignoring what they are saying (politic/religion). Are you people for real? This song is 100% about the ameican government and how they have brainwashed all of its citizens. Every single word! Swaying to the rhythm of the new world order! The boogeyman is "terrorist groups that are often fake or at least the treat is." The window is a metaphor for the outside world. I never feel the need to lay things out like this but the discussion here is so far off base and this song so perfectly puts into words how they view their people as pets and their attitude towards humanity.

Yeah there are plenty of interpretations. But lines like " swayin to the rythm of the new world order" or "
counting bodies like sheep to the rythm of the war drums" suggest that its really somehow about a government.
But I'm still not quite sure about the " boogeymen"... They could stand for terrorists lieke Jamie pulen said in the original comment, but i think they could also stand for the few voices of reason inside this government, that the government doesnt want its people to listen to. Any further ideas?

I always interpreted this song as Maynard mocking religion for putting the masses in a state of ignorance while simultaneously getting them stirred up against each other and the fear of a larger conspiracy of world government. I believe Maynard wants this global communism but without the meddling of radical belief systems of religion, and I also believe this to be an impossibility since we'll inevitably destroy each other over our differences in belief whether they are real or imagined. Faith is powerful and not everyone shares the same belief in faith and governments prey on people's superstitions to sway public opinion and produce the next zeitgeist over time through carefully mediated messages and subconscious manipulation.

This song is so much better than Counting Bodies Like Sheep.. I kept looking for this, and kept finding that fucking song, which is good in it's own right, but damn, this is just so much more sensitive and meaningful imo..

... damn Maynard is THE man ...
    Flippin funny as hell ...
... Wow ... i wonder if ANYONE who left comments realizes ...
Maynard actually had his son singing the back-up vocals for THIS track ...
    100% totally TRUE ...
as for everything else ... guess it's possible that i have finally 'gone around the bend' & am COMPLETELY bonkers ...
    however ... i'm crazy not stupid 😜

Perhaps an out there theory, but I think the song is about addiction, which is the theme of the album. The narrator is the drug, keeping the person using them safe from pain, and truth, and choice. The boogeyman could be people trying to get the person off drugs. And in regards to "counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums", to me that references the war on drugs, and the drugs are counting the people they've killed to the rhythm of the war drums of the war on drugs. Maybe that's out there, but I haven't seen anyone else post that, so I figured I'd see what y'all thought.

To add to my last comment, the eighties as a whole sucked! Longed for the art of rock and music in general, then the 90s came. After I thought I was going to become old fashioned like my father cause music became corporate bullshit, here came the 90s! What a great artistic period for Rock!! Many great bands were allowed to be artistic again!! But now, here we go again!!😞
