  • The Band of the Royal Marines Plymouth visited Sydney, Australia, as part of the International Fleet Review celebrating the centenary of the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy fleet into Sydney Harbour in 1913. As a British colony until Federation as a nation in 1901, previously the Royal Navy operated from Sydney. From 1913 the permanent Royal Australian Navy bands wore the Royal Marines ceremonial uniform until around thirty years ago.
    At 2:47, in the background just above the Drum Major, about 50 metres away, is the exact spot where Captain Arthur Phillip RN, landed in 1788 with Royal Marines to establish the first European settlement of the Port of Sydney, Colony of New South Wales and eventually the Nation of Australia.
    On 9 October 2013 the Band formed up in The Rocks area of Sydney and were near the rear of a parade of contingents from all visiting vessels down George Street for review by the Governor General of Australia. They were immediately in front of the H.M.S. Daring contingent.
    The Director of Music, Royal Marines School of Music, Portsmouth, Major Jason Burcham, can be seen standing behind the Drum Major at the step off.
    Whilst it was 28 degrees Celsius (83 F), the following day was 37 degrees!!
    The Band had a final performance at the Capitol Theatre on 10 October, some recreation, then departure on 13 October 2013.
    All the Royal Marines bands have a great musical heritage and behind the public performances is an enormous effort to excel. Plymouth continued this excellence in their Sydney performances.
    Performance of the full music "H.M.S. Ocean" (thank you lirbugler) at the end of this clip can be seen in the link below, a week earlier, in Wellington, New Zealand. However, the brass section sounds much sweeter in Sydney, the warmer weather perhaps?

    It would be cool if they came back over to Australia and as a bigger band like they do in England..

    The Drum Major told me, then I promptly forgot. He said it was "H.M.S. ........."
    I want to know as well, because it sounds like a great piece of music. The ensemble sounds perfect, however I have to say the cornets and bugles sound especially superb from 4:10.

    I didn't think the Royal Marines would just put their instruments down on asphalt! Makes them look lazy. Great video of them standing around doing nothing with 10 seconds of music at the end.

    • @stupeter6568
      @stupeter6568 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Anything but lazy...2 hour wait till we marched off...look after your men and women and they look after you...I was the Drum Major that gave the order...result...we were fresh and ready for the Parade (Instep).

    I'm a former trumpet player, and under no circumstances would I ever place my trumpet on the pavement. I was quite shocked to see that. A student quality horn is over $700, and professional grade horns run $3000-$4000. Even if the government pays for them, it's an unacceptable practice.

    • @callumwilliams1449
      @callumwilliams1449 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Quite common in the military for atleast the drums to be placed on the floor. You must recognise though that they are stood in thick dress uniform with metal in their hands in 26 degree heat.

      I mean, why? There has never, ever been a height restriction in the British Army for bandsmen, Christ, there's a reason drummers used to be called Drummer BOYS because they were frequently no older than twelve or thirteen. Why should we implement a height restriction now, for no good reason?
      Perhaps I agree with you for actual infantryman in the Guards regiments (but even then I'd argue the content of your character as well as your ability should determine whether or not you should be a guardsman, rather than something you have no control over, and which in the modern day provides you no tactical benefit whatsoever), but here in this video you're seeing Marines and Naval personnel, neither of which have EVER required servicemen to be tall in their entire history, so I've no idea why your complaining?
