Well he hasn't got nerves of steel because he bottled it at 10 - 8 and then for his penultimate throw, he missed the big number he needed with two darts! Huge pressure and he was lucky to get over the line in the end - his nerves nearly blew that for him.

Basically, Luke lost it. Van den Bergh is painful to watch even on x1.5. Poor sportsmanship for his time-wasting, esp against Heta.

A very different Heta to this afternoon. After his semi you would have thought Humphries was odds on. Not even the crowd could get him over the line. I think they may have thought Van Den Bergh was engaging in gamesmanship but I don’t actually think he’s that slow compared to some players from the past.
He was slower then a sick sloth.
The way he waddles to the board and picks the darts out and waddles back at a snails pace is clear tactics.
Luke is the best rhythm thrower in the sport by a county mile the only way he was ever going to beat Humphries was to play this way and it worked.
Credit Luke for taking that bullshit in stride.
He's the best in the world by a Longshot just wasn't his night tonight.
In darts you have to concentrate on your own game. The opponent should not bother you if you‘re a professional. Way slower players than Dimi, not the reason Luke lost

VDB talked about it in interviews after some matches that he has been struggling quite a bit mentally. Seeing a sport psychologist and what not to help him with his game. Agree that I dont think it was gamesmanship, think he was just insanely nervous and trying to focus and recenter him self.
Both Heta and Humphries seemed incredibly annoyed by it though.
He's no Justin Pipe, that's for sure.

I enjoy watching the finals. Dimi is cool with that drunk smug look. Luke's comeback spiced things up and gave the audience a good ride.
Special thanks to Dimi for the chances he gave the cameraman to feature the crowd.
Don't mind the slow play at all, but standing with hand in pocket, sipping water in front of the crowd was a bit much. They'll turn against him and that would be a shame.
Fair play to Van den berg, now he’s a winner again!!! Although admittedly he is a pretty slow player.
Painfully slow and now doubt off-putting for his opponents... he really screwed with Heta. He is the Eddy Charlton of darts. Even on 1.5 speed, it is hard to watch.
He’s slow on purpose to disrupt his opponents timing. Especially when they’re putting a run together, he will (very obviously) take his time gathering his darts or showing displeasure. Don’t like him.

I dont believe he is slow at all. Its just that these days, top players throw rapid darts. But Dimis pace used to be the norm. Composes himself. His actual 30:30 throw of darts. isnt slow. Dennis priestley, even taylor werent rapid players

the skill is amazing but a close 2nd is how fast they calculate what to shoot at to get to certain numbers! ...sorry I am a beginner at darts and it's mind boggling for me
It's all patterns and repetition, a few months and you'll be counting automatically
Would have preferred Luke to win but both players having match darts for the title can't argue with that.

Dimi always takes three sentences to say what most can say in one. I know he has anxiety issues and deals with them the way he does, but he needs to work on it more without the antics. Taking a break is no problem, just do it right. Congrats to him. Love his throw

When I try speaking in my 2nd language I often struggle to make my thoughts clear, given English is his 3rd language I'll give him a pass on that one. That being said, when he speaks he over dramatizes everything, very cringe but kinda funny lol

I’m still trying to understand the slow play at 10-8, which nearly cost him the match. It really looked like he was going to bottle it up. Kinda off putting I get it, though it’s good to see Luke take it in stride given the circumstances. More of a Luke fan than a Dimi fan after this match.
He always does this when his heartbeat gets too high. He takes a moment to get it to slow down before throwing again.
I think he has periods of what looks like mental yips, the last few years you can see he's always trying to calm himself down, talking to himself, etc. I think it just became too much at 10-8.
I genuinely don’t think he was trying to slow the game down, more just he was trying to calm himself down as he had the darts to win the match, the adrenaline he must have felt must have been overwhelming.
I was just waiting for him to get worse and his average to worsen, because his usual average is about 90, 94, 95 and so on. And he had 98 which is quite a lot for him and he is not that strong

@SuperYtc1 Delayed the game multiple times in his matches to disrupt the rhythm and put off his opponent. Within the rules but mostly frowned upon.

Dimi is a great guy, he has some issue to deal with emotions but that is a condition. Just like Humpreys had panic attacks earlier in his carreer that almost made him stop.

I LOVE these highlights but editor if you see this, Luke was on for a 9 darter in leg 12 and the highlight starts with him on his 7th dart. Would be cool to always see the potential 9 darters :) seems highlight worthy especially because dimitri somehow still wins the leg
Dimitri cracked under pressure, but Humphries went the same way in the decider. Nice win for Belgium.
If he'd lost that match I think his misses would have mentally scarred him for the rest of his career. At 10-8 he had the job done and he blew it.

@@jameskillbot2867 Fairly certain it's more than 3 or 4 lol. Dimi obviously likes a drink, but so do the likes of Chizzy, Cross, Wright, Whitlock, and most of Northern Irish and Dutch players. Scott Williams all but admitted he was fucked when he made that "two world wars" comment at the Worlds.
Challenge tour is notorious for drinking. Players apparently refused to play once until they opened the bar. Development tour had a load of fines the other week because they all got pissed. Apparently someone pissed in a cigarette bucket in front of CCTV and another punched a hole in the wall in the toilet.
Some players don't drink when they play (Price, Clayton, Noppert and more), but like 95% of the tour drinks. Only ones for a fact I know don't drink are Littler, Dobey and Keane Barry. Also Huybrechts (which is hilarious given how much of a cock he is).
The introduction of the grey "water" bottle is very inventive. I guess the players who like whiskey or brandy or don't like clear mixers, pushed for this. Dimi certainly one of the few players left who can play drunk and it's not easy to play fast when drunk. Don't think he did too much wrong here.

Playing your own game and using tactics is part of most sports, fair play to dimi,but i understand the irritation for quicker players as they cant speed things up to unsettle a slow player.

I used to like watching Dimi as he has a smooth, quick throw. Now though, he's a real tough watch. He moves around the oche like a young Scot Mitchell. He celebrates scores of 85 and 93 with fist pumps. And, the worst bit, he takes about 30 seconds to actually throw his darts whilst he performs some sort of weird, deep breathing, meditation nonsense. It's all very annoying.

Don't understand the complaints about DVB slowing it down. Against any player who can get hot like Luke can, why wouldn't you slow it down? I would do the exact same thing, you don't play to your oponents strengths, and do everything you can within the rules to win. Was great to see DVB back after his year hiatus 😁

van den bergh may have rubbed a few people up with his pace but there is no denying his darts.relentless treble scoring and good finishing. but if only littler and humphries had not fluffed their doubles.the all round quality of darts at the moment means there is not much room for error.and yes it was very disappointing to see heta fall so far short after that QF.

I for one find Dimi's trolling hilarious. Every sport needs one like him. When he's interviewed he is very dramatic and cringey but as far as I know he's never bad mouthed anyone in an interview.
Like 99% of people I'm sure Dimi would rather people like him than not. But if you offered him £110,000 (even more when you consider this qualifies him for the grand prix and grand slam) + a major title in exchange for tens of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands?) of people hating him for his antics he'd take it in a heartbeat. And guess what, so would I, and so would you, and if you claim otherwise you are either mega rich already, or more likely, a liar.
