    These pistols are absolute works of art. It seems like there are a lot of Polish craftsmen these days making beautiful well made historical firearms and bows.

    They used wheellocks while on horseback. Several guns to a rider, so I expect that safety was developed faster than a groin guard in cricket.

      When in 1618 the , Thirty Years War ' started, german heavy cavallry consisted of the last Lanzierer, men with full plate armour, a lance as main weapon and a pair of wheellock pistols for modern times reason. The other type of heavy cavallry man was the Kürisser or Reiter with 3/4 armor and two or more wheellock pistols, and perhaps also a short wheellock musket ( Karabiner) . The other branches of cavallry had been light cavallry, also in 1618 still lightly armored, and the Dragoner/ dragoons, in this days mounted infantry for fast moving, a lot of light cavallry had been mercenaries from Hungary/Poland/ Croatia or even Tartars or Albanians. Wheellock pistols had been in Germany of this days also common at mounted bodyguard units of important and rich princes of the more than 300 german states. In rich states, for example the Electorate of Saxony , the bodyguards pistols had been decorated with carved bone or ivory ( in german Elfenbein/ elves bone). In rich states the whole pistols of the bodyguards had been decorated in this style, in not so rich states only the handle, not covered by the saddle holster.

      Yes, you could shoot your own horse dead while pulling out those long pistols from the holsters at the saddle near the horse's neck, shoot into your own leg or foot. Even if your survived surgery you would die of the infection.

      @@firearmsaddictloveguns some the pyrite would go into position to spin against the wheel and the pan would open when you pulled the trigger after it was wound up. others you would open the pan or put the pyrite into position against the wheel. obviously the less you had to do the more craftsmanship was required.

    The underneath of the pancover gets fouled by that slimy, tar-like powder residues quickly. Then the lock is slowed down. The pyrites gets slimy as well. I own two locks by Master Bolek myself and they are fixed to rifles for the shooting range. The usual series for target shooting is 15 shots at competitions within 45 minutes. Some minutes must be sacrificed for taking the lock out, brushing the dirt off, even taking the wheel out when crumbles of pyrites have made their way between the wheel and the lockplate/wheelcover, bringing it to a halt with a grinding sound.

    The ideal angle to fire a wheel lock pistol is canted over to the left, like some ghetto gangster. This makes the pan charge more likely to flash through the hole into the barrel. Keeping it upright caused a 'flash in the pan' and no shot, far too often.

  • @АлександрСпиридонов-к9ц
    @АлександрСпиридонов-к9ц 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It seems You pour to much powder on the pan that leeds to delayed shots or hangfires. So, a touch hole should to be a little bit higher that level of priming powder to prevent fuse effect. You also have tilted the pistol to the left side and than tap it and this action leeds do hangfire too for the same reasons. It's better to tilt pistol to the right side and than tap. It's not incorrect in terms of history correctness cause reiters were prone to tilt pistol to the left before shooting but they do it this way to get a little bit more steady position for better accuracy. So, anyway it's your deal and You may do this as You want. But if You want to reach a faster ignition you have to do this in opposite way. Thank You for the video. Wish You to have a lot of fun with this gun and I think You will cause Bolek is one of the best gun makers in the world in terms of wheel locks. Best Regards, Alexander!

You not only get into contact with lots of people there but you have an opportunity to look at the many pics that members have taken at museums and collections, plus pics of replicas. I know a man who can make the most crucial parts: the springs, the chain and the wheel. Bolek offers an online tutorial for some 150€ . That means you can watch videos and get the drawings. Have you ever thought of buildng a plain cavalry pistol or a solid hunter's rifle? You can get barrels for "Jäger Rifles" from makers like Rice or Colchrain easily.

      You have a good eye. The hammer/cock has 3 positions. They are fully open facing the muzzle, almost straight up, and against the pan cover.
